Do you take any fish oil supplements? Supposedly they contain Omega 3 which is good for the brain along with other qualities. I may be wrong. Do you take any fish oil supplements and have you noticed a difference since taking them?

I think it depends on the DNA make of different ppl. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. But it all depends on the individual taking the pills smile

        I guess for two reasons:

        1. Real or perceived health benefits
        2. Yet another way of teaching obedience to children

Actually I wrote a Hub about keeping your brain young, where I talk about this.  Yes, I take a multivitamin with fish oil in it.  There's very strong evidence that taking Omega-3 enables your brain to function better, but there's conflicting evidence as to which is better - fish oil or ground flax seed.

Hi All: I don't believe there is controversy over fish oil or flax seeds. Fish oil contains EPA and DHA the only omega 3 fats that are "bio available", from animal origin.

Flaxseed has ALA, a type of omega 3 fat from vegetable origin that has to be converted into EPA and DHA before it can be used by the body, it is not bio available.

The main benefit from fish oil (out of more than 50 benefits) is its anti inflammatory properties. Inflammation causes heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, cancer, immune disorders, Alzheimers, etc.

Fish oil works through a hormone like compounds called eicosanoids that are produced in every cell. You can read more here http://www.omega-3-fish-oil-wonders.com … noids.html

      Best wishes,

I can't, I'm alergic to shell fish & doctor says its too risky for me to take.  I try to eat more fish, but I'm just not a fish person.  Wish there were other ways to get that Omega 3.

I'm pretty sure some to most people rarely eat fish everyday let alone 3 or more days a week. I think thats why most including myself supplement for not having a balanced diet.

Yes Marine I take Fish oil daily.  I really believe it helps with my mood, especailly in the winter when I am not exercising as much and there is little sunlight!  I seem to notice that my thinking is less negative when I am taking the fish oil...

Interesting. Thanks. I started taking it 2 days ago. I'm trying to analyze whether or not I can tell a difference. It's too early to tell right now.

  13. Jeffrey Neal profile image68

I began taking it today, actually. It was suggested after tests taken during a recent doc visit.  He told me that it would raise my only-slightly-low "good cholesterol" a little bit. I have also heard of the potential benefit to brain function, but never tried taking it before.

I do take a B-complex as I feel that it makes me a little more energetic, and I'm typically not.

I would imagine, though, that it should take several weeks to notice any difference in the way it makes you feel (and function), assuming there is any change.

I think that benefits from nutritional changes and supplements accrue over a long period of time. It is unlikely that people would see a dramatic change in a short time, but it still might be useful for overall health in the long term.
A lot of doctors recommend the fish oil and it is generally believed to be beneficial (bene fishoil?) for a lot of conditions. I like sushi and cooked fish, but also take the capsules. Walnuts and other nuts are also high in Omega 3.

Yeah, from what I read, Omega-3 is the main thing. I am doing good to eat fish twice in a month.

The recommended amount is 3 grams aka 3,000mg a day!

Last week I met this guy in his 50's in killer shape, 6 pack abs. He takes up to 15 grams a day. I guess...just listen to your body. Im going to try to slowly work up to 6grams aday. Im no doctor but I do tend to study nutrition. But please dont go trying to shove 15 grams of fish oil down your throat. I would say to keep a regimen of 3grams and work it to another 1-3grams per additional meal after that.

  16. Colebabie profile image60
    Colebabieposted 14 years ago

Yes, I do. My skin is purdy wink I take 1000mg/day. You can also get a prescription, this is better than the kind in GNC because it is absorbed more readily. I did a research project for my Biology of Cancer course on the benefits of Omega 3. Look up some studies by Dr. Ron Pardini. Really cool stuff!

FYI- There is a vegetarian Omega 3 supplement as well.

For products with Omega 3, be really careful! Usually it is not a large enough amount to be absorbed by the body or really make a difference. Example: Breyers yogurt with Omega 3 has like 8mg of DHA in it. Will it hurt you? No of course not. But will it really make a difference? Probably not. Just a marketing scheme.

this is NOT in reference to normal fish oil (omega 3 capsules) but there is shark liver oil out there i.e. squalamene, alkoxyl and my uncle, who had stage 3 kidney cancer beat cancer with NO chemo, drugs or anything except with the purest shark liver oil.

He was diagnosed to live for only 3 more months and that was 11 years ago. I am a total believer in it smile

I take 2 omega 3's daily plus the ground flax seeds. I sprinkle them on cereal, salads, yogurt.

I used to eat more fish, but sometimes really wonder about fish because of the high amounts of mercury found in water.

I just read this article the other day with recent news about omega 3's.

As with any supplement, there are 2 things to keep in mind when you take fish oil, the dosage and the frequency. If one the 2 is not adequate you will not get good results.

In the case of fish oil there is not established dose it depends on several factors but in short, you should take at least 900 mg of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA form the label) every day. That is close to 3.000 mg of fish oil, depending on the fish oil you get.

Please read more than 50 benefits you can get from fish oil http://www.omega-3-fish-oil-wonders.com … efits.html
