What in the world is Roberts getting involve in polical grand standing. Arn't Justices suppose to be impartial. Another Bush appointee shows his true colors.
-In a controversy stretching back to January’s State of the Union Address, Chief Justice John Roberts told a group of law students at the University of Alabama that President Obama’s very public dissent from the Court’s Citizens United ruling, which effectively rolled back most existing restraints on corporate funding of political campaigns, was a provocation to the court’s cherished independence. -
It certainly is independent of the two other branches of government, how would the President feel about the Chief Justice criticizing the health care reform bill publicly? My guess is if he did so you would be very upset with him.
The decision was the worst since Bush v Gore. Moreover, it clearly exposed Roberts' lies in his confirmation hearings where he pledged respect for prior precedents. His opinion in this horrible decision reversed several long established precedent, and as many have pointed out, it will have very damaging consequences to our electoral process which was already awash in corporate cash. The President didn't cross the line in questioning the decision. It wasn't the first time a Supreme Court decision was questioned. Plenty of Congressmen have condemned the Roe v. Wade decision which established women's right to choose to have an abortion. And I can remember seeing "Impeach Earl Warren" billboards across the South and Midwest states over the court's landmark decision reversing the longstanding separate but equal schools decision.

I object to the setting of the comments. a State of the Union address is hardly the place to dress down the SCOTUS. I voted for Obama and really believed he was the moderate he portrayed himself as, all the things said about him and his "Chicago style bully tactics" are beginning to show. I am embarrassed for my Nation to have this character represent us, I am embarrassed to admit I voted for him!
Obama is a moderate. The Supreme Court majority are radical activists who deserved criticism for their unprecedented, potentially very damaging decision. I guess you could say how much worse could corporate buying of influence get? They already practically own the Congress.
Obama is a moderate Ralph?
Right Between Castro and Carter LOL.
Judge Roberts did not give up any rights when he became judge did he?
Does he still have the freedom of speech?
Obama can take shots at whoever he wants but shame on any American citizen who chooses to criticize his decisions?
Aye comrade.
Obama had every right to offer his opinion regarding the decision.
His choice of venue was inappropriate. It seemed like an ambush.
I don't agree. The Supreme Court ambushed the country. The state of the nation will clearly be affected negatively by the decision. Roberts is more out of line, now, when he gives a speech criticizing the president. He should have just kept his big mouth shut and spoken in his decisions.
If the invited guests are expected to act respectfully, shouldn't the president be expected to do the same? You don't attack someone who isn't allowed to defend himself.
He didn't attack anyone personally. He criticized a very bad decision by the Supreme Court. I don't recall that he mentioned Roberts or Scalia or anyone on the court by name.
I think it's obvious that Obama has the right to suggest and make political policy, even against court decisions, it his job to set political policy. He unfortunately can't replace a judge, but he can chose one.
What I'm trying to say is that, once a superior judge is selected and placed in the court, the judge is in the court for life. Except, but I am not sure, if the judge gets impeached. It wasn't necssary my political stance. I am suggesting it is Obama's miss fortune.

This latest 5/4 Supreme Court decision on DACA is inexplicable. John Roberts, as Chief Justice should know better. This is a series of miss steps by John Roberts ever since the decision on the ACA. Why is this happening to our high courts? It was John Roberts who claim there is no politics in the...

Conservatives, how do you feel about Chief Justice Roberts siding in favor of upholding ObamaCare? In what can only be characterized as a victory for the Obama administration, the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision which basically upholds the The Affordable Care Act. Chief Justice...

Does DT ever learn his lesson? He seems to piss off people in all parts of the Govt, even the Chief Justice of the SCOTUS. Roberts--in a rare statement to a POTUS--there were only fair judges and not Obama or Trump judges on the court. A good idea or not?

Is it fair for Sen. McConnell to say that Obama should not be allowed to name a Scalia successor?I want to see among the hub pages community who clearly falls on one side or the other

Will President Obama nominate a minority for the Supreme Court? With the death of Antonin Saclia, Supreme Court justice, President Obama can potentially sway the high courts leaning direction, upsetting the current balanced court. It appears to be a huge policital battle in the making.
