Interesting tidbit on social networking

   It is interesting to note, that upon experimenting with social networking and submitting my most recent hub, The Darkside of Medicine: Doctor's and Nurses Who Kill, I found that by sharing the links with digg, del.icio.us and stumble upon, that I now am showing traffic from 4 other sites, including google. This only happened after I submitted my article to those places. Does this have to do strictly w/ doing this, or is it somthing else i am not aware. of?  Just an interesting thing I noticed here at 4 am in the morning, with nothing better to do than be awake and scrolling the hubpages!!!!

   There have been a few posts in the forums about this (a few hubs too, I think).  It definitely could be related to submitting your hub to those sites.  However, I used to use them, but no longer do.  I still get hits from sites like google fairly soon after publishing.
   
   I'm sure another hubber who knows more about it will be along soon, but I wanted to give you some sort of answer!

   I guess I just didn't find it worth my time.  If I do get traffic from them (and I have gotten a decent amount), it isn't really quality traffic.

      Stacie, I'm interested that you didn't find it worth your time. I've had the same gut reaction about social bookmarking for a while.  On Helium - where they promote the idea strongly - it's impossible to get a clear idea of the value, because you get no stats other than your earnings.  I must confess, I started to get the feeling that they were pushing it because it heightened Helium's profile, rather than doing much good for my articles in particular! 
      
      It does take a lot of time when you add it all up. If I was on other forums or using the sites anyway, it would be a different story.

   You might wish to note that if all you do on those sites is submit your own hubs, you'll wind up banned from them before too long.  They want you to genuinely use their services, not just create backlinks to your own stuff.

   My recommendation is to pick one bookmarking site where the community matches to your interests and give that one your full attention.  This means commenting and voting on the other people's submissions, submitting links from various sources (including your own articles when appropriate), etc.  It should be enjoyable in its own right -- not a chore.
   
   Or, just not worry about it.  The longer you are established at HubPages and the more you participate here, the less you'll need to worry about "juicing" your hubs with links in order to get them into  search engines.

   For what it's worth, I don't use them anymore either.  Maybe I just haven't found the right place yet.  Most of my traffic is from Google.

   Social Media and Social Book Marking can be a valuable tools.  The problem is resources like HubPages and Squidoo do not get the credibility they deserve in these venues, because of past problems/issues.
   
   Like Paul mentioned you have to be a part of the community to receive any real value.  These venues should not be ignored though if you wish for your Hubs to receive good placement in the SERPS.  Shameless promotion will not cause you to be banned at Social News Sites but you have to keep in mind evergreen content is not news.  If you are publishing How-To's and Recipes and not about current events it is not newsworthy.
   
   If you are an active participant at sites like digg and just do not digg your own content then you can through in your own stuff once in a while.  Same goes for other sites like propeller.  Getting just a few votes though is enough to coax the spiders and search engines to give your content a better search engine ranking.  But if you use them to just self promote your own content you should be shown the door.
   
   Then again the Internet for me and publishing content is not a hobby for me it is my only source of income as well.  I have recently dumped a portfolio of domain names so I will become more active again in the Hub Community providing real content here to compliment other content on the web.

    I have only very recently tried out a couple of bookmarking sites. On reddit.com I made one submission only a couple of weeks ago.  When I logged in yesterday, I got a "page not found"! though it seems to still work when I navigate around.  But then when I tried to log out, it hangs!
    
    Any idea why this is happening?
