Finding Self

   What is self? How does a person find themselves?  If a person continually lies to themselves, can they ever find themselves? I think the definition of self in short = honesty. Your thoughts?

      I think it's more a process of learning to BE ourselves once we unpeel the layers of whatever we've knowingly or unknowingly put there since birth. not accepting that our thoughts define us, but something beyond thoughts. a thought may influence our actions, but thoughts are not who we are. it's more an awareness of being a living being.
      
      learning how to empty the thoughts of prejudices and judgments,the noise of the world, that's where we may start to discover ourselves.

      If it is so easy to find the answer to finding self, why do so many wonder around in others illusions lost with little consciousness of who or what they are?

         a person who is brought up to deny the self will not find the self until they are honest with themselves.  there are many who are taught to live in denial

            I agree, much more dishonesty is taught than honesty and it is much easier to believe everything than to question everything.

               and why there is a huge status quo in our country. we are taught from birth to do rather than be. children should be taught how to think, not what to think. too many adults live in denial and wonder why they are unhappy. they were never taught how to think and question and make their own decisions.

   I think honesty is a good start.  But I believe it involves the continuous seeking of self.  We are perduring objects, and as such, the new "whole" being is always different from the whole being of a moment ago, a year ago, in childhood... etc.  Honesty focused inward at any given moment only examines the place we are shining its beam, but that place, that "piece" of us, has a context in a moment and a stream of thought based in a present that may not reflect the totality of the larger self; it's like studying one note in a long song.  Plus, you can be honest and still be "wrong."  The way to truth is through comparison of alternatives, through models, analogies and enthymemes. I think "honesty" means not that you are truthful so much about who you are, but about being honestly open to rexamine and recontemplate through the lenses of an ever widening inquiry over time.

   It is good to not be banned anymore, so I'll reply to the OP:
   
   Finding 'self' is to find clarity without the influence of others, and without outside thoughts & beliefs from others; it is to come at terms with being atomically connected to the universe and to reach a higher level of awareness. ...And to other 'simple minded' folks caught up in the material world or to the ones with narrow minded thoughts, finding their 'self' may simply mean that they know their name and have eventually learned how to spell it... LOL!
