Target US Visitors

   Hi friends,
   
   Since my computer IP address is from India, major part of my traffic is from India. Can anyone suggest how I can target US visitors without changing my IP?

   What do you know about that is popular in the states? Say, if you follow an american sporting team and were to write a hub about your favorite team (you could always add the team t-shirts and sweat shirts and hats n such from amazon) chances are you would not get people from india reading those hubs but rather americans who share your interest in their sports teams and such. I truely wish I had some interest in sports as I did sell a sweat shirt for a pretty penny (was worth more then I would have thought they go for) somehow for a foot ball team and would love to try to sell to that market but my understanding of sports is pathetic and my interest non-existant. I do wonder if I could try for the UK market, talk about beckams torn ligament or something with affiliate links to places where you could buy the related gear but since amazon here is strictly US I am not sure how well it would work here. Could be a niche for americans interested in english football (soccer) but I expect thats a pretty small niche
   
   Others may have better advice but at the end of the day the one thing I know is that hubs and HP is geared toward the american market already so trying to focus there is a good idea

      Great tips Kirstenblog, thanks for sharing this.
      I am trying to sell some Amazon stuffs like movie DVDs through HP; I got few keywords from Adwords keyword tool, which Americans are searching more, but I think IP is one of the most important factors in Google page ranking.

         I find it hard to think that your location is that important when you consider that the 'big players' out there will want to be based in tax havens and possibly live in nice tropical locations but sell to one of the biggest global markets, the americans. Even if it is a huge part of where your traffic comes from the hubs we write here are hosted by HP in San Francisco right? I could be totally wrong but it just doesn't seem to make much sense to me that you can't easily get traffic from the states if you are not physically there. I am in the uk and would say that most of my traffic is from the states and uk traffic comes in second really.

               I do use the keyword tool but with a pinch of salt so to speak. Remember its backward looking, if you think you might have an idea of a new trend, a movie about to hit the market for instance, will not have had traffic in large numbers but may well have large traffic in the months to come.

   I don't know if you are talking about your own site or hubpages, if its hubpages there is little you can do unfortunately. This might help if it's your own site:
   
   It's not the IP of your computer that matters its the IP of the server that hosts your website.  A TLD like .com gives no information about your intended audience location so search engines fall back on the IP of the server to determine which country to target. With a .com or .net for example you can update geo targeting using Google's webmasters tools but if you already have lots of links pointing to the site from other websites hosted in India it might not be effective and you might initially have to cull some links.
   
   If your domain is country specific (.in) then there is not a lot you can do.

      Thanks Peter,
      Most of my hubpage visitors are from Google.co.in, I have few blogger blogs, same problem with them too. As you rightly said I have got few links from Indian websites for my blogs, I am not much worried about my blog traffic as its not completely meant for monetizing.

      That sounds like a great tip, backlinking can help with ranking in search engines and if the back links are from the states it does make sense that it would help for ranking for american searches. You learn something new every day eh?

   BTW, selling DVD's puts you in competition with free downloading (even tho it usually illegal) and buying the same DVD some place like eBay, where you don't have to pay quite so much. I would only promote a DVD that was totally unusual and rare, not likely to be available for download or eBay. I have yet to even try actually, I read ages back that its hard to sell DVD's and CD's because people are more likely to just go download a torrent file else where . It kinda made sense to me too, I don't like paying full price for DVD's or CD's. Also be aware that amazon does not consider downloadable products the same as physical ones, you may want to have a read of their tier system and limits regarding commissions with electronic download products
