Life is what one makes it. Life is the greatest gift that any of us can ever receive. It is not a word game, nor the subject of a joke.
Life is everything! 
A reoccurring conversation between me and my dad...
Dad: What is life?
Me: a magazine
Dad: how much does it cost
Me: 5 cents
Dad: I don't have 5 cents
Me: that's life
Dad: What's life?
(and repeat)
Well..not in my lifetime, but my dad thought it was funny (so probably when he was a kid it was).
Although...I do remember when a payphone call was 10 cents.
How about: "Life is a bowl of cr*p, a can of worms, and a bummer - and then you die" (sorry, I couldn't resist)
