Human Capital Theory an economic theory put forth by Gary Becker that suggests just as investments in physical capital increase productivity and efficiency so too will investment in education. The empirical evidence as shown seems to affirm this assumption It has been demonstrated that the most advanced/ developed countries are the most educated. This is especially true among women. Societies that provide quality education for women demonstrate greater social stability, population stability, and family well being. Nations with little or no access to education demonstrate opposite trends. Empirically speaking the human capital theory seems to be more truth than fiction, however application of the principles of the Human Capital Theory are meet with several barriers. Child labor is a major barrier to advancement as is work to school transition. The need for children as a means of income is an issue that needs to be addressed in developing countries before the human capital theory can be fully realized. The ability and opportunity to apply education must exist if education is to be utilized as a tool for self-actualization. Education in itself should not be considered the panacea for poverty and oppression in developing countries. Social structures must also exist that allow the application of education as well as provide a transition from school to work supported by internal entities. Education must also be valued as a cultural commodity. Education is a basic human right and should be granted as inclusive, equally accessible and practical in its application and liberating. Another observation is that although first generation recipients of a post-secondary education may not fully realize the principles of human capital theory , continued accumulation of wealth can be achieved through multiple generations receiving higher education. Each generation advances a little further than the previous.
