"Tea Baggers" Bring Out the Worst in Some Liberals
Ah, the good old days. Remember when bringing down "the man" made it worth getting out of bed in the morning? Whether joining a grassroots uprising, speaking at an anti-war rally in Washington, or spending the afternoon protesting a capitalist pig's latest venture - those were the days of real activism.

Then came the rationalization that the only way to really make a difference was to go undercover, you know, make lots of money and stake claim in the system. As a result, progressive ideologues like Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Bill Ayers and David Geffen all have one thing in common - they eventually became the man.

A progressive liberal is finally calling the shots

The good news for liberals is all those years spent fighting the establishment finally paid off. A progressive liberal is calling the shots in Washington. George Bush and Dick Cheney are gone, and now elite, educated, savvy liberal Democrats hold the future of our nation in their hands. Everything should be coming up roses, right?

Apparently there is one problem. Progressives like Michael Moore seem to be having a harder time finding projects these days. Moore wants to make financially successful movies about the bad guys, but unfortunately, his peeps are now directing the show. Politicians like Nancy Pelosi continue to reminisce about past grassroots movements, which were somehow more legitimate than the "Astroturf" protests of today. Liberal activist groups across America sit in lonely offices wondering if there is still something, anything they can protest.

Are Tea Party members racist bigots?

Tea Party members are often called racists, terrorists, bigots, hate-mongers, uneducated, stupid, ignorant, and are regularly accused of inciting violence. However, when compared to the protests of Bill Ayers' Weather Underground group, Tea Party gatherings look like a church picnic. Here's a comment about "tea baggers" posted by a visitor on Michael Moore's website:
Yup, this certainly explains it. The shoe is on the other foot and now the socialist democrats are forced to respond to the attacks they perpetrate on our freedom. In the words of Benjamin Desraeli "It is much easier to be critical than correct."

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl … html?cat=9

To make matters worse, instead of celebrities, actors and talk show hosts, Tea Party members look like old Aunt Edna, the bald guy who coaches little league, fat Jackson who owns the hardware store, and last but not least, angry voters who may change the face of upcoming elections.

So, why do progressive liberals hate the Tea Party Movement? The tables have turned. Conservative grassroots Tea Party groups are protesting perceived injustice, questionable government policies, and possible political corruption - just like their liberal friends used to.

And let me tell you why. Tea Party members are... 7,6,5,4,3, 2,1 Years too late to show some concern about our Country, Government Spending, Government Growth, or the lost of our Freedoms.

And another thing...Bill Clinton is coming after you. I almost feel bad for. R.I.P

I'm always happy to run into a hubber from my own spot on the map, Jeff
There are quite a few of us Michiganders roaming around here big_smile

The problem with the tea party noise is that it infects people who are hurting and struggling and just plain pissed off. They're angry, they hear the yelling, and they run like moths to the candle. But they are completely ignorant. It reminds me of a cult, a little.

The result is spiteful opposition to anything wearing a blue label, with absolutely no understanding of the issues and policies or of recent history it seems. There was a dude in my coffee shop last week who was blathering on and on, and he proudly said "I'm a tea bagger". I almost did a spit take and I SO wanted to ask him if he's done any porn work.
            Completely clueless.

I'm not painting with a wide brush here - I'm not calling conservatives stupid, and I do not discount people simply because they disagree with me.
What I am doing is calling out the "tea baggers" who go around spewing nonsense and misinformation. If you are using words that you just learned for the first time yesterday when you heard somebody yelling them on the radio, you may want to consider spending a little time with Google before you launch your next attack.

            big_smile
Secretly I'm glad they are not calling themselves the coffee party. I do love my coffee.

Why do they hate? Same reason as most hate: fear.

  9. lovemychris profile image76
    lovemychrisposted 14 years ago

Nothing to do with fear. It's hatred for what they have done to our country. Plain and simple.
Did you happen to see Media Benjamin of Code Pink?
She tried to arrest Karl Rove.
She told him, "You wrecked our country". "You wrecked our country."

That is what it's about. It's like  Jesus in the Temple over-turning the tables of the Money Changers. It's like Jesus confronting the Pharisees and calling them a Brood of Vipers. That is what it's about.

It's about illegal torture and illegal spying and taking for the rich while the poor die,...with all of your blessing! It's about calling Sheehan a publicity hound and Rush saying.."Yeah well, we all lose things", when she was talking about her dead son. Its about Laughing about not finding wmd's. It's about lying and Haliburton and Blackwater and Exxon and people being called wimps and traitors who fought against those horrible policies.

It's about YOU treating us like shit for 8 years and now wanting respect for your dissent. You demand what you never gave! You treat our president like a piece of garbage before he even steps foot in office, when you wanted Bush bowed down to as a King!
That's what the hate is about. Nothing to do with fear. The only fear is the likes of them getting anywhere near Power again!!!

I think the tea baggers forget it's 2010. life does progress and must evolve, change with growth. they want smaller government for a much bigger country which is very complex. they want things to stay the way they want it.

every tea bagger I've ever seen is so angry their whole life is consumed with it.

I see no generalizations in my comment. now you make a generalization about liberals. do you want discussion, observations? tea baggers 'appear' to be more concerned with their political ideology. the facts are pretty clear. when you have a country our size with the amount of people and the complex issues that arise because of this, government has to rise to meet the challenges. it is not 1787 or 1940 or 1976 ,,,
smaller government to build bridges and make interstate highways..?
we have 3 branches of government for a reason. they're supposed to work together.

Yes, I voted for Obama. I campaigned for Obama, and I followed his campaign quite closely. I'm not entirely happy with his policies, but I'm satisfied that they are a huge improvement over Bush and far better than McCain-Palin would have been. Obama has continued far to many of Bush's policies, and I'm quite concerned about what we are doing in Afghanistan. I hope it turns out better than I expect it will.

I can't speak for the ones I don't know, but only what I have seen or heard. I listened to an interview last night on PBS and a teabagger was talking. I tried hard to understand her anger. I just don't get the anger... I can understand being upset or of a different opinion.

That is really the crux of the problem.  No one is able to clearly see or understand the other's viewpoint.  Republicans are appalled at the network news coverage that pumps up insignificant things and runs on ad nauseum about unimportant things while there are real issues deserving of unbiased coverage and reporting.  I try to watch both, and it's important to watch both, just entirely too time-consuming.

Just switching between CNBC and Fox Business, it is so glaringly obvious, and those are business news channels.  I have to watch every day, and when I think CNBC is being too gratuitous and the world is a peach and the economy is grand, I switch to Fox Business to make sure I'm not missing real financial commentary that is perhaps not a fit with what NBC wants to portray in the interests of impacting the direction of the stock market.

Best line from that NY times article: “I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security,” said Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif. “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

I have a feeling that will be happening a lot more in the days to come.

    And Medea Benjamin yes.
I don't go for groups much, but she keeps the focus on the right things, imo. Like showing up at congressional hearings and having signs they hold up...love that! Like some big military guy will be testifying on Iraq and there will be a pink sign pop up behind his head: "Prosecute Bush". love it! And say what you will about Chavez, he stood up to the economic hit-men. That's why they hate him.
Couldn't turn him, make him play their game.
Not willing to bow down and bend over for the neo-kooks.

Liberals OPPOSE the Teabaggers because we recognize them as a threat to democracy. However quaint their costumes may be, they are NOT defenders of the Constitution or the country Lincoln defined as 'Of the People, By the People and FOR the People".

The objectives as they define them - on the web - and in discussion I have had - are opposed to the provisions of the New Deal. That means they are opposed to any reforms of Social Security or Medicare (unless they are free). The eventual result of this tactic will be the colapse of these programs - not because they can't be fixed - they CAN - but because they don't WANT these programs to work. If they do it validates a concept of government that they despise. "Government FOR the People".

The founding fathers were opposed to a standing (permanent) army. The founding fathers were clearly opposed to foreign entanglements. The teabaggers see the USA as a global empire conducting wars for the purpose of enriching American corporations. The same people who don't think we can afford health care for our citizens will fight tooth and nail for every DIME of military appropriations, even though we spend more on 'defense' than the rest of the world COMBINED.  America - as these people see it - is the modern version of the British Empire we fought AGAINST in the Revolutionary War.

A significant portion of the teabagger movement reminds me of a bowel movement -  Evangelicals bent on imposing their religious views on society at large. The separation of Church and State is up for grabs in 2012, they believe. If you believe in your right to choose as an individual, you don't need religious wack-jobs dictating from DC.

That I see is an alliance between the top 10% who own 70% of this country - and don't want that to change. A second part of the group is big business fighting government regulation. And the Evangelicals form the shock troops for the astroturf circus called the Tea Party Patriots.

This pressure to maintain a huge 'defense' force is what brought down the USSR, combined with sanctions etc.

Armed forces are like a nations manhood, easy to pump up but hard to get down; and if it is a big organisation then it has a big impact on government.

It appears to me that the US Administration has two choices to remain popular, either terrorise their own people with fear of terrorism and foreign competition etc to whip up patriotic fervour, kinda wartime spirit - or do the good stuff, like look after people better, healthcare, real jobs, etc.

It also seems clear that Bush is on one side and Obama on the other, generally speaking.  I can understand those who support the 'look after people' position, maybe because that would be my position tbh, but support for the other side by any average person seems to be shooting yourself in the foot, or in the head in some cases.  The Constitution frequently quoted seems generally to look for a fair deal for everyone, everyone is surely the top tiny% who own everything, the few who directly support them and the system and the majority who they, in turn, should be looking after.

Here is what I don’t get; some of you say that the Tea party is a peaceful political group. Who are you kidding, the party openly protests against the government, they show up with signs of hate, pictures of our president portrayed as a Hitler look alike. Then they run around screaming and yelling and get whipped into such frenzy that half of them do not even realize that they are spreading hate, and making comments that warrant a night in jail, and you say they are the peaceful party.  Take your blinders off and look around, as soon as they find out that the repeal of the “Health Care Bill” is not going to happen, they are going to a party with-out a country.  Do you really think that Sarah “PAY ME TO SPEAK” Palin cares about the party; she won’t speak for anything less than $100,000.

You put quotes around the word 'hateful' -- looking to soften it up maybe? I'm not.
Or maybe you are trying a diversion... because hateful is not at all the same thing as hate. We're not talking about kids saying mean things on the playground at that grade school you keep going on about.

Now -- why don't you pass that on to your fellow liberals who remain in a state of 'ignorance' in this regard?   They seem to construe mere political discussion as 'hate' speech.

And no, generally, quotes around a word are in no way intended to 'soften' them up.

Bush invented 'free-speech zones' . Whenever Bush was scheduled to  speak or appear, the police wold collect any Bush protesters - with signs o anti-bush tshirts and put them in a pen out of view of the cameras.

After Bush was gone they would be released without being charged - and the pro-bush image was preserved.  Contrast that to Obama functions where protesters are not only allowed signs - they carry assault wealons. But Brenda willsay we live under a 'tyrant'.

            Yeah, right!

That's actually a very good point. I tend liberal (more moderate, really), and I hear that label a lot. To reduce someone's views to a derogatory cliche says more about the person doing the labeling than it does about the person or group being labeled.

Well you know, it's a lot nice than labeling people "Un-American" as the Queen o' the Baggers likes to do. What, pray tell, does that say about her?
Maybe someone should have a little talk with her about that. Ya think?

Of course, it may be hard to actually talk with her, as she requires all people questions be pre-screened: they can only ask her questions she wants to answer.
Much like Bush. Same MO...control everything but call it freedom.

I DARE one of you tea-party people to show up at a tea-party rally with Sarah Palin as speaker, with a gun. Let's see how far you'd get.

Double standard? Try triple...quadruple...try NONE. No standards, just "my way or the highway" typical republican crap.

Although thank you very much to Voinovich for helping the American people over helping your obstructionist party.
Many people are grateful to you and thank you.

You must have seen the news story of that couple who were eating dog food so they could afford to buy their medicines?
Meanwhile, Michelle Bachmann gets $250,00 for her family farm......

Come on! Is this the America we want?
We are better than that. Better than Sarah Palin.

What all of you liberals that demonize the Tea Party people miss is the real concerns they have and which you all and this administration refuses to address. You also don't seem to understand the repercussions of these huge entitlements pushed through with lies on the actual costs. You won't address it! You want to change the conversation and make it about anger, and Bush, and hate etc.

Our country is in trouble, you can ignore it if you want to but that won't make the problems go away. You want your "free" stuff and you expect the "rich" to pay for it all. Well it ain't gonna happen. Revenues will have to come from more than the rich YOU will have to pay more in taxes, a lot more!

I don't mind paying taxes I just don't think I'm getting my money's worth, and a CN Npoll shows that 3/4 of taxpayers agree with me.
    http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/04/15/ … ted.taxes/

Another poll shows that most Americans believe their taxes will go up.

    http://newmexicoindependent.com/51623/a … tax-breaks

They will have to because at the current rate the revenues in the coming years will only be enough to pay for social security and medicare and nothing else. Bernake said yesterday that the national debt by 2020 will be more than 100% of GDP and we'll be in the same place Greece is today.

Same old story. Americans want the potholes in their roads repaired, parks maintained, food and drugs inspected, banks regulated, wars won, etc., but they don't want to pay the taxes required for the services, (if war can be considered a "service").

Bernanke is right that the time has come to figure out how we are going to deal with the deficit. Cuts and higher taxes will be necessary.

That is bullcrap. Healthcare is not an "entitlement", it's a necessity. Just like food, housing, heat, education....
All that stuff that you Private-sector types like to make huge profits on.
Take the profiteering out, and you will se the cost go down, and maybe people won't need help anymore!
After all, it's hard to afford the cost of living here on the poverty wages that the profit-driven private sector pays. Why don't you address that?

And here is why I do not like, nor trust the Tea-Party machine:

The head of it here in Boston, who organized that thing yesterday...Kristen something.
She was asked if she thinks Obama is an Indonesioan Muslim. She said "I don't have enough info to know.".........
Someone said that after Obama was elected, she sent an e-mail over the web that said; "Just another black family on gvt. housing."
When asked if she sent it she said "I don't recall."..........

Why don't you baggers adress that?

If you are so worried about YOUR $$, why don't you care that a hero of your movement-- Bachmann took $250,000 for herself?
Why are you saying Obama is evil for cutting waste out of Social Security? oooh he wants to kill your gramma....
If you want to be taken seriously, why use those tactics?
Why not cut from your pet programs, such as business subsidies??

Oh no--can't touch the golden geese..just cut from poor people...as always!

As usual the left once again wants to distract and deflect the issues. Only Ralph was able to admit that budget cuts and tax hikes will be necessary.

Jeff apparently believes the Tea Party is only interested in bringing down Obama otherwise they're fine with growing government extending their reach beyond the authority of the constitution, out of control spending and an increasing tax burden on the middle class. Oh I have a bridge for sale cheap!

Defense spending will certainly have to be cut and America has to be more careful about entering into conflicts. I'm all in favor of ending both wars now and closing all our bases on foreign soil and using the savings to improve and develop new nuclear weapons and nuclear power generating facilities.

Love my Chris is just an angry liberal ranting, with nothing to add to the conversation. She keeps bringing up Bachman and her farm subsidies, The government spent 40 billion on farm subsidies paying farmers to grow corn that we don't need. That corn is then converted to cheap sugar High fructose corn syrup and put into every single processed food you buy. I'm all for ending that subsidy, but as long as farmers are entitled to it, I can't blame them for taking it.

You seem to like the government Chris, and don't mind paying taxes, so do you take any deductions on your taxes? You know if you're so much for social justice, maybe you shouldn't be taking any deductions.

.60 on every tax dollar goes to military...from Democracy Now.

The tax cuts under repubs benefit wealthy.
Under Obama, they went to middle class and poor. That's what I mean repubs taking from the poor to give to the rich padrino.

And I see you won't address Bachmann, or the underlying racism in this movement...OK.

So when they stand up there and say "this is not about hate, it's about spending" what are we to believe?

Obviously they hate, and obviously they don't mind spending other people's money, as long as it's spent on them.

    Where is their integrity?
