   Good afternoon,
   
   Since the House of Representatives voted to pass health reform legislation on Sunday night, the legislative process and its political impact have been the focus of all the newspapers and cable TV pundits.
   
   Outside of DC, however, many Americans are trying to cut through the chatter and get to the substance of reform with a simple question: "What does health insurance reform actually mean for me?" To help, we've put together some of the key benefits from health insurance reform.
   
   Let's start with how health insurance reform will expand and strengthen coverage:
   
   This year, children with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied health insurance coverage. Once the new health insurance exchanges begin in the coming years, pre-existing condition discrimination will become a thing of the past for everyone.
   This year, health care plans will allow young people to remain on their parents' insurance policy up until their 26th birthday.
   This year, insurance companies will be banned from dropping people from coverage when they get sick, and they will be banned from implementing lifetime caps on coverage. This year, restrictive annual limits on coverage will be banned for certain plans. Under health insurance reform, Americans will be ensured access to the care they need.
   This year, adults who are uninsured because of pre-existing conditions will have access to affordable insurance through a temporary subsidized high-risk pool.
   In the next fiscal year, the bill increases funding for community health centers, so they can treat nearly double the number of patients over the next five years.
   This year, we'll also establish an independent commission to advise on how best to build the health care workforce and increase the number of nurses, doctors and other professionals to meet our country's needs.  Going forward, we will provide $1.5 billion in funding to support the next generation of doctors, nurses and other primary care practitioners -- on top of a $500 million investment from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
   Health insurance reform will also curb some of the worst insurance industry practices and strengthen consumer protections:
   
   This year, this bill creates a new, independent appeals process that ensures consumers in new private plans have access to an effective process to appeal decisions made by their insurer.
   This year, discrimination based on salary will be outlawed. New group health plans will be prohibited from establishing any eligibility rules for health care coverage that discriminate in favor of higher-wage employees.
   Beginning this fiscal year, this bill provides funding to states to help establish offices of health insurance consumer assistance in order to help individuals in the process of filing complaints or appeals against insurance companies.
   Starting January 1, 2011, insurers in the individual and small group market will be required to spend 80 percent of their premium dollars on medical services. Insurers in the large group market will be required to spend 85 percent of their premium dollars on medical services. Any insurers who don't meet those thresholds will be required to provide rebates to their policyholders.
   Starting in 2011, this bill helps states require insurance companies to submit justification for requested premium increases. Any company with excessive or unjustified premium increases may not be able to participate in the new health insurance exchanges.
   Reform immediately begins to lower health care costs for American families and small businesses:
   
   This year, small businesses that choose to offer coverage will begin to receive tax credits of up to 35 percent of premiums to help make employee coverage more affordable.
   This year, new private plans will be required to provide free preventive care: no co-payments and no deductibles for preventive services. And beginning January 1, 2011, Medicare will do the same.
   This year, this bill will provide help for early retirees by creating a temporary re-insurance program to help offset the costs of expensive premiums for employers and retirees age 55-64.
   This year, this bill starts to close the Medicare Part D 'donut hole' by providing a $250 rebate to Medicare beneficiaries who hit the gap in prescription drug coverage. And beginning in 2011, the bill institutes a 50% discount on prescription drugs in the 'donut hole.'

      In the words of the great Ted Kennedy "socialism has never worked in the history of mankind but I'm going to make it work".   Are you that egotistical?
      
      We have heard warning after warning from all those living under socialized medicine not to go there.  The horror stories are endless.  And yet, you support it.
      
      Let me give you some insight into what is going to happen.  And remember, you helped bring it about.  The first thing that will happen is the removal of the incentive for anyone to go into the medical profession.  There will be no benefit to out way the long hours needed to become a doctor.  So, we will have a shortage of doctors.  Next there will be massive inefficiencies and corruption that will soak up large quantities of money so you will need more tax revenue.  You will try to solve that problem by taking more money from the taxpayers.  This will occur until the voters get tired of having to pay more and more money and cut you off.  You will respond by limiting people’s access to health care.  Elective surgery will be one of the first things to go.  This would include pesky little things like hip replacements for old people.   There will be a 3-month wait to be able to see a doctor.  The average age of death will fall to meet the Europeans.  But, that's okay.  There just old people...they’re supposed to die.  Besides there aren't enough of them to create any kind of threat at the ballot box.
      
      The interesting thing is we do not have a problem with health care in this country.  Everyone has access now.  If you don't want to be wrong, eliminate Medicare and close the free clinics and you won’t need to face that issue any more.
      
      This will happen and when it does you have my permission to call me a prophet.  Or, you could say that history repeats itself all the time.  Those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it.

   Thanks for posting that information.  I read this article this morning from the NY Times, the article I liked, the content disturbing. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/23/opinion/23herbert.htm about the disgusting response to the health care bill.
   
   It was a great day for America, eventually the disgruntled will come to see it too.  Maybe.

   No, they are still disgruntled from the time of civil rights and the ERA and anything else that threatens their absolute total control and domination.
   They will never change. And especially as long as the operatives have sway on the air-waves.
   Do you know, it was Bush back in 2000 who made it possible for the conglomertion of radio? The Dems reversed it in 09...something to do with bandwidth... and of course deregulation began with Reagan and that has led to the corporate control of America.
   And DESPITE it all, the Dems are chugging along-trying to make change for people! Not corporations, who the right-wing SC made people, but ordinary, working, ignored, spat upon people of this great country.
   Not that Dems haven't played a part in this deranged behavior, but it was under the control of the last administration that it was a steel-grip, threats to your life if you went against Republican power.
   And wouldn't you know, the threats are back!
   Death threats people! Aimed at Democrats because they voted for the healthcare bill. You see-it's home-grown terrorism. Just like Nepalitano said....
   And it's nothing new. Operation Rescue has been at it for YEARS. Same tactics.
   These aren't people fighting for freedom, they are out and out terrorists who use violence to get their way. And for people who say it isn't white supremacy or kkk...google rahowa.
   So, what are we gonna do about it?
   All I can say is...AGAIN? REALLY? A G A I N ? ?
   God, man--history repeats, but this song and dance is getting OLD.
   Where is the new generation of decent, equality loving young people who are the leaders of today?
   We need you now...the old farts are stinking up the place!

   Of course it keeps the insurance companies which means the US will still pay twice as much per capita for what is an indifferent health sector when compared to other countries.

    And don't forget, there is only ONE in the end.imo. And that force is the ultimate good. That is what I believe.
    But you are right, sometimes you wonder if it's all planned, because who in their right mind would threaten people for voting on a  bill? That is crazy.
    BUT--our history is FULL of this. Full of it. Threats and worse.
    
    Follow your intuition and pay attention to the spurious stuff....and PRAY for GOOD.

    What is happening in The United States Government is the equivalent to the street gangs in N.Y. First you try to impose you will if that does not work then you try to buy loyalty and when that fails use violence.

    And I was right on the money about Palin. KABOOOM is absolutely fitting to describe her. Did you see this:

    I'm not about to join the thread except to say THANK YOU to irish for posting the basic components of the new Health Care Reform. There's been a lot of confusion amidst the dust of disagreement.  I'm just sorry it wasn't tougher on the insurance companies, but it's good to know for those us that are fairly well off and past our prime, "new private plans will be required to provide free preventive care: no co-payments and no deductibles for preventive services." It's a monumental move in the right direction. Thanks irish.
