Hi, I am in UK but Google Analytics shows that most of my readership comes from outside UK, predominantly USA - the Google Ads that appear on my hubs (for services and products) are mostly .co.uk ads which I feel would deter a reader from US using, even if it was of interest - is this Google 'being clever' and showing ads relevant to my country or is this somehthing I could change to show more ads from .com or USA companies? I feel that this may be part of the reason why I am not earning from Adsense.
It's Google being clever, don't worry about it!
They are are relevant to the country you are in, but only people in your country see them. People in the US will see ads relevant to the US. At least I hope that's how it works, because here in Spain I am seeing a lot of Spanish ads, written in Spanish, on my hubs.
would you be kind enough to look at one of my hubs out of interest to see whether your country's ads are displayed there? That would be very reassuring. Thanks
Google targets ads for each visitor depending on location, what ads have been clicked on previously (plus probably a whole load of other factors - yes they are very clever!) So the ads I see will probably not be the ads you see even though I'm also in the UK.
How much you make from adsense has much more to do with how many visitors you get to your pages. This hub written by Mark Knowles gives you a good idea of the level of traffic you need: http://hubpages.com/hub/makingmoneywithgoogleadsense1
Good luck!
Thanks so much Susana for the helpful reassurance. I will certainly read Mark's Hub.
Adwords Advertisers usually specify that their ads are targeted to their location, depending on whether their site is catering to a local market or not.
For example, if you had a hub on say, hot air ballooning, then if it's a hot air ballooning business that do.... geez, I don't know what they're called, flights (I truly picked that one out of the hat), then they'll target their market. So if there's a business around here where I am (in Australia) I'll see their ads. If there's a hot air ballooning business not too far from you, you'd see their ads. I wouldn't see the ads you see because I'm far less likely to become a customer to their business.
If though it's someone advertising their website and their site is full of general information, they won't mind who their visitors are or where they come from.
Thanks so much for the explanation Darkside - Google is even cleverer than I thought!
Here's some related reading at Wikipedia that will fill in any gaps that you might have: Contextual Advertising and Adwords which will let you see how the other side of the Adsense equation works.
Thank you for this - I am getting my head round it all - but very slowly!

First off, I reached 1/2 of my payout today, so that is very exciting! Thank you all for the advice so far, but I am in need of more. I am a little concerned, because I earned from two clicks this morning from a very low traffic hub. I thought that was really weird when I saw how much I had earned...
