Even though most of us on here (including me, by the way) weren't around when those classic 40's movies were out, many of us have seen them and have particular favorites.
One of mine was The Lost Weekend (guy gets hit by a car and loses his memory). Another was Greer Garson in Madame Curie.
Do you have any favorites? How about favorite actors from that era?
Greer Garson and Katherine Hepburn were among mine. Robert Taylor was another one.
My knowledge of the era is severely limited, but I'm partial to Citizen Kane, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, and Pinocchio.
Oooooh!
I LOVE Gilda, Ziegfeld follies, Easter parade, a Foreign Affair, On the Town, Broadway melody of '40, The Lady from Shanghai, That Forsyte woman, I was also rather fond of Madam Curie, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, The kissin Bandit....These are a few....My list goes on and on...I live for classic cinema! (and im only 20)
My favourite actors were Rita Hayworth, Rob Taylor, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Ann Miller, Lauren Bacall, an early Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland etc...
I also loved (all Katharine Hepburn movies) Dragon Seed, Sea of Grass (really sad), Bringing Up Baby and, of course, Philadelphia Story.
"The Thin Man" Series, With Myrna Loy & William Powell, the first was produced in 1936 and the sixth in 1947.
Casablanca, The Man who came to Dinner, Brief Encounter, Adam's Rib, Grapes of Wrath
I absolutely love old movies and The Bicycle Thief (1948) came to my mind first when I saw this thread. ![]()

there's been quite a few Oscar best picture winners that are musicals (using Oscar as benchmark for quality, and therefore likeability) and there's one in the 40s - Going My Way with Bing Crosby ![]()

oh thanks well yes i have seen Bing Crosby in some musical films so the one above is it good
Shadow of a Doubt. Alfred Hitchcock. This one of his rarely gets talked about as a classic (Psycho & The Birds always overshadow it) but it is an amazing film.
casablanca tops the list for me. I could watch it over and over.
hmm, also I think, The Grapes of Wrath, Notorious, Rebecca.
there are more, I can't think of their names.

Brenda, you have seen them, they are often remastered (cleaned up) but still the original film.
Hitchcock classics like Foreign Correspondent and Notorious are among my faves. And as cheesy as many say it was, an obscure film noir called Deadline At Dawn is one I frequently revisit.
Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man
The Spiral Staircase
