How are you saving money on your wedding cake? Will you have a dessert bar and a small wedding cake?
Mr kippling makes exceedingly good cakes
I'm not planning on getting married (again) anytime soon. But if I were, I would make my own cakes and cover them with fondant. I would bring the layers to a cake shop and give them instructions for decorating it. It won't save a ton of money, but every little bit helps!
I want my mom to make my wedding cake
And I hate fondant. With a passion

Fondant is really for appearance only. You don't eat it, do you?

Yes your right fondant is mostly for apperance, but you do eat it.
Why don't you buy an iced but undecorated cake from your local supermarket and use a thick ribbon in the wedding colours to decorate each tier - nice, quick and cheap!
