Or am I lame? I just worked hard on a recipe hub. Pictures. Info. keyword use etc... and it just said 50 when I published it.

Yes
Yes. All new hubs start at 50. If you let them sit and percolate for a few days before publishing, you'll see the score go up and down. I've had some reach 60+ before even publishing!
R2Moo2: Do you mean Yes I am lame.. or yes they start at 50? (JK) Thanks for the info. The perculating thing (good word picture) is intriguing. Why would it do that?

I didn't notice the lame part. I was saying that your hubs start at 50.
Anyway, why would a recipe hub be lame? I thought its good stuff!

From what I have seen yes but I just published a hub not that long ago that started at 75. Weird.
I dont think its always 50. in my case,at times its above 50, at times below but most often is 50.
Not all of them. Some start lower than 50.
I published a Hub a few days ago that started from 63, but that's cos I had created it and left it in my account, unpublished for a few days.
Majority of them start at 50.
The whole thing frustrates me. I had a hub at 74, then it slowly dropped to 69 while another, with less hits and comments, is now at 71. Another one I used key words, took pictures, did all those things you are supposed to do. it has had 26 hits today and is still at just 55. Is there any explanation? Will they come back up again?

All hubs start at 50.
After you've claimed a URL have a look in your dashboard. It'll say 50.
It will fluctuate from there.
So by the time you publish it, it may very well be lower than 50.

it's a learning curve here, if you haven't read all of the info, getting started material HP offers, I strongly recommend it.
it will help immensely. have fun, learn, write and pick a good title/URL. there are all kinds of hubs here showing how to do that. just enter whatever you want to search and it will take you there. btw, welcome.

Doncha love the obvious !
As said above, write a good hub with lots of content and pictures, and then wait a few days before you publish it. I've done that and it has always been much higher than 50 when I publish. It also takes me a few days to finish a hub and be happy with it, so it's no problem for me to "wait to publish"...
Anyway, as someone said above, let it "percolate" before you publish!
