In your opinion, what does (or should) a music CONDUCTOR do? Feel free to comment on all aspects - classical, non-classical, orchestra, big band, choir, gamelan, theatre, gospel, church, percussion ensemble, salsa band, marching band, rock concerts, etc...

IMHO, a conductor has the job of pulling it all together. Musical instruments are in different keys, make different sounds, and are played in a different manner. While everyone may be playing the same sheet music, without a conductor to bring in the different sections, etc. it would all be chaos. Believe me, that is not a beautiful sound.
