fastest speed you have driven? Approximately 165 mph
for how long? It was a race between a friend and myself traveling from one state to another, and it took about 10 minutes. It was 3am in the morning on a highway from Connecticut into Chicopee, Mass.
how fast? Approximately 165 mph
who with? No one in either car except drivers.
What kind of Car? I was driving at 1981 Pontiac Grand Prix and he was driving a custom re-built 1966 Chevy Impala
Did you get a ticket? No, neither of us got tickets.
Don't know how fast - the speedometer was broken
Two hours (with a pit stop for gas) got us 260 miles. The last 50 or so was not over 70 MPH as we came down the Columbia gorge into Portland, Oregon.
2 friends, one of whom was a GREAT mechanic and had rebuilt the car literally from the ground up.
A 1960's (I think) rambler station wagon with an aftermarket OD!
Ticket? What's that?
On the road?
Car.
145mph.
911 Carerra going down "the track" between Darwin and Alice Springs. Sparks from the chassis hitting the asphalt and enough adrenalin even for me.
Motorcycle.
155mph.
Darwin again, this time going home to Fanny Bay, down past the Hospital after I closed my motorcycle shop for the day.
The motorcycle was a very hot Kawasaki 1100 I had in stock.
I had to wipe off 45mph for the first right hander, and came over the hill near the nightclub well clear of the ground with both wheels with only two or three inches of road left.
More adrenalin than I needed. I had to stop for a head flush. ![]()
I have been a very bad boy with petroleum based transport.
150 mph in a Flaming Red 1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda, stock with 3 carbs from the factory....all with a mechanic friend on an uncluttered freeway for several minutes, broad daylight mid day weekday, in the heart of San Diego's suburbs....no tickets...pure fun...
Been close to that a couple times in german cars....love that german engineering, but man (girl), that bone stock Mopar was the best!!!!
Bummer...Kimberly's been banned, reportedly due to some forum posts. I've seen the posts, and as with all Kimnberly's work, always tactful, with class, and totally unjustified.
To her credit, she's writing, staying upbeat, and amazing. in spite of always being the brunt of someone's cruel joke....
150 mph in a BMW 635 on a normal motorway section without cameras at 3 in the morning. The only thing I remember is how that fairly straight motorway with a few long curves seemed to develop much sharper corners. The motor still had more to give, but I decided that I would either die or get a serious driving ban if I continued with it. I regret that I didn't try that stretch again to see just how fast that motor would go, but I am still here so . . . . .
That 3.5 litre BMW V8 is an awesome motor!
I have driven the M configuration and it was very very quick.
I have never had the opportunity to wind one right out... always run out of road, or came to a bend before I could see 150.
I have driven an E-type at 120mph and that was simply unsafe! Handling was deplorable, but what a beautiful motor.
Gotta love that E-type class, all the way up to that 120...
When Maggie Thatcher killed all the small businesses my garage-going-down-the-tubes neighbour offered me three e-type Jags for a couple of hundred quid the day before the liquidators arrived. I turned him down because I had nowhere to keep them for the ten years or so that I decided I would need to keep them before they had any value. One of them was really beautiful with ventilated bonnet all the way down that somehow made it look even more racy. I still regret not renting a garage for them, although how I would have paid the rent I am not sure at that time. I noticed that second-hand e-types were fetching between 40 and 60 thousand pounds about 20 years ago, that would have meant I would have had to keep them for around 12 years to hit the jackpot.
Ouch! That bought tears to my eyes! I would like to see a decent one for sale under $100,000 today.
A truly beautiful car, perhaps one of the worlds most beautiful, and handling didn't matter much as they cruise like nothing else.
My friend and I built a 3.8 in to a 4 litre making it stove hot during the rebuild, with profiled D type camshafts to race it in a classic racer my friend owned.
The scrutineers told us to go away, when it was still spinning the skinny tires fitted at over 100mph.
Too much oomph for the car. We wound up putting a Coventry climax motor in it.
how fast - 180km/h, was the max i could do in the car.
how long - between 5-10 mins
who with - 5 school friends
car - nissan skyline 1985 GT
ticket - nope ... was driving in Zambia, at the time there was no ticket system.
they did eventually get a ticketing system, here's how it worked.
they place 3 wires on the road and have a 1km long cable connected to those wires ... as soon as you cross the wires at higher speed than allowed the traffic police used to jump out of the bushes and on to the road to stop you.
I drove 140 mph all by myself! With just me, myself and I for approximately 2 miles. Appr. 2 minutes. My gut told me to slow down and just ahead was a highway patrolman!
Thank God for breaks and Thank God his radar was not pointing at me.
Needless to say I didn't ever do it again. It is the ultimate driving machine.
Thanks BMW! ![]()
Many times I don't know how fast I'm going - too much in the zone. It's usually a V8 roar on tight mountain road exits, buried throttle in crazed excess, and over-cranked heavy metal with the best, extra long jam sets....
