Fire Emblem is a popular turn-based strategy game that uses units to navigate through map grids to defeat your opponent. Your characters will level up after killing a certain amount of enemies and get stronger, gaining special skills. If you landed on this page, you must be looking for similar games to it. I am going to give you a list of games like Fire Emblem.
Heroes of Might and Magic Series(PC)
Heroes of Might and Magic(HOMM) is an excellent series that you can play that resembles Fire Emblem. They are a medieval strategy turned-based war game. The most popular ones are Heroes of Might and Magic III,IV,V and VI. The game revolves around controlling a town and having a hero going out to conquer other towns. Your goal is to eliminate enemy heroes and towns.
HOMM 3: Armageddon's Blade
While HOMM 3 has 2D graphics, its gameplay is excellent. You get to choose from 8 different towns and many unique heroes with different abilities and spells. Heroes act as generals that lead their troops to war. When a hero is defeated, the troops vanish. The story revolves around Erathia and the quest of King Roland and Queen Catherine to restore Erathia's glory after the death of their father.
This is the newest version released in 2011. It has 3D graphics. They decided to cut down on the number of towns to 5, but they gameplay stays about the same as HOMM 3. They got rid of the magic guild and use the creation of spells/abilities wheel. Each hero can also be classified as "Tear" or "Blood" hero. A "Tear" hero is more defensive while the "Blood" hero is more focused on offense.
King's Bounty is a game developed in 1990 where the player leads a hero and his/her army to find the Scepter of Order before King Maximus dies. There are 17 villains and each defeat of a villain reveals part of the map that has the Scepter of Order. There are 4 hero classes that you can choose from. They are Barbarian, Knight, Paladin and Sorceress. Each class has different leadership ability and starting troop strength. The troops that you can hire are all based on medieval times and mythical creatures. Magic can be used in the over world or in battle. You can find a villain in a castle or use resurrection on your troops and summon instant armies as well if you have an empty space.
King's Bounty: The Legend(PC)
This is the 3D version of the classic King's Bounty. In this game, they cut the classes down by one. You get to choose between the warrior, paladin and mage. The amount of troops you can hire will depend on your leadership skills. The hero himself cannot attack directly, but he can aid his troops by his use of skills. Warriors fight effectively with any army. Mages aid the army with hard hitting spells. Paladins excel in mind skills and hence better leadership skills. He can also turn priests into inquisitors to help reduce casualties in battle.
War of Eustrath(iPad/iPhone)
War of Eustrath is a turned-based RPG strategy war game. You control characters with"GEARS". Fight using various unique characters in the game with GEARS. The steps you take throughout the story mode changes the ending of the game. There is a total of 50 plus stages and 20 unique characters with 40 units. You can upgrade your GEAR with money won from battle. Their battle screen looks extremely similar to Fire Emblem, making it extremely enjoyable. You can play this on the iPhone/iPad.
Battle of Wesnoth(PC)
This game has a fantasy setting played on a hex map. You have to use strategies such as staying on favorable terrain or day to your advantage to defeat your opponents. You can choose different units to battle, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. There are humans, elves, orcs, dwarves, trolls and drakes. You also get to choose the different factions to use:
- Rebels - Mostly elvish, mermen and mage units
- Knalagan Alliance - Dwarves and human outlaws units
- Loyalists - Human calvary, mages and infantry units
- Northerners - Orcs, goblins, naga and troll units
- Undead - Dead monsters!
- Drakes - Dragon-like race that can fly
Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes(PC)
This game has an excellent story and funny at the same time. The graphics are definitely high up there compared to the previous games I showed you. You get to use a party of 10 anti-heroes to fight in a Grotesque World with elements of Heroes of Might and Magic, Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Ecol Tactics Online(MMORPG)
Ecol Tactics Online is an anime like MMORPG that focuses on tactics. Similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, it requires strategy and skills to progress in the game. You get to choose between the Warrior, Archer, Mage and Cleric to fight in Vermonics. Your character is the leader of your team and you can hire mercenaries to help you in battle. As you gain levels, you learn new skills and figure out different types of combos to defeat your enemies. If you like the looks of the game, be sure to check out my review of Ecol Tactics Online.
Super Robot Wars - Alpha Gaiden(PS)
An epic turn-based strategy game featuring many of the Japanese Robots. It combines all the super robots and gundams into one game. It is extremely popular in Japan and Asia. Since most of the Super Robot War games only have the Japanese version, there are only fan-made English patches for the game. It is similar to Fire Emblem, but replaced with cool robots and unique characters. Each robot has their own special attacks and abilities. Some robots have area of effect attacks, making them extremely fun to play.
This classic turned-based strategy war game is extremely fun to play. You go through each mission to defeat your enemy by being the commander officer. You build and lead your troops to defeat your opponents. The terrain plays a huge part in which troops will have advantage. Land troops are good in roads, mountains, cities and plains. Tanks require fuel supply if they stay in battle for too long. The creator put a lot of "real life" stuff by making it realistic. Your commander officer also has their special abilities that can be used in battle. It is definitely worth playing in my opinion. I spent quite some time on this game.
