Best RPG Games of 2013

The last couple of years have seen a surge in the popularity of Roleplaying Games (RPG) on the console and PC. With games like Witcher 2, Dragon Age, Fallout 3 and the Elder Scrolls series providing superb graphics, excellent and challenging gameplay, large worlds to explore and excellent and atmospheric plots it’s difficult to see how today’s games can challenge them – the bar has been set very high.

However, there are quite a few gems on the horizon as well as some solid contenders for the title of best RPG game of the year. Here are some highlights:

  • Might & Magic Heroes VI: Shades of Darkness – PC - a follow up to the M&M Heroes 6 game with new heroes and gameplay – this is a standalone expansion pack – you don’t need the original game. Good graphics, great game play.
  • Soul Sacrifice – PS Vita – a great action RPG with co-op game play. Excellent graphics and fun gameplay.
  • Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan – Nintendo 3DS – a great retro style anime RPG that incorporates everything that was good about the 80s and 90s RPG games. Gret plot, good graphics and fun game play.
  • Omerta: City of Gangsters – a good gangster based RPG with a detailed and accurate representation of Atlantic City, strategic game play and turn based tactical combat – interesting RPG game.

The games below are some of the more exciting RPG games coming to a system near you soon:

Tales of Xillia

Systems: PS3; Release Date: December 2013

There are hundreds of decent PS3 only RPG games available. This game is a great anime game that is already hugely successful in Japan. With brilliant cut-scenes, great game mechanics, a behind the back viewpoint and graphics that aim to bring realism to the genre by ensuring the terrain is ‘full sized’ this game is likely to be a huge success in the west.

If you love the final fantasy series then you will love this game.

Elder Scrolls Online

Systems: PC; Release Date: December 2013

Elder Scrolls has set the bar for the quality and depth required for single player role playing games. Their mechanics, graphics, sound and plot are simply outstanding providing the game player the ultimate experience in RPGing.

This year Bethedsda Software is entering the online realm and producing a MMO. However, don’t expect this to be your typical MMO. Bethesda promise to create a fully connected world with an enhanced Elder Scrolls combat system that gives control to the player.

There’s no doubt that the game will have state of the art graphics and sound and will probably have the most in-depth and satisfying quest system of any online RPG game. Hardened fans of the Elder Scrolls series are horrified that there will be an online game, however, it’s likely that the game will be superb as a solo game thus satisfying even the hardest critic.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

Systems: PS3, XBOX 360, PC; Release Date: December 2013

This is an intriguing combination of traditional RPG and comedy RPG. This game is directly form the producers of Southpark and therefore will be full of the same type of humor featured in the TV series. You get to team up with the main characters of South Park and enter their world to combat evil.

The graphics will have the hallmark look of the TV-series, the characters will voiced by Parker and Stone and you can expect there to be plenty of comedy as well as seriousness in this game! It’s going to be one of the most unique for years as is likely to become a cult hit.

For me this is one of the most anticipated games of 2013

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Systems: PS3, XBOX 360; Release Date: December 2013

If you’ve played Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 then there’s no doubt that you cannot wait for the conclusion to the trilogy. This game continues on from the muddled story of the second game and brings it to a conclusion. It features the same state of the art graphics and sound and continues to tweak the mechanics to make them more logical and intuitive.

The game allows you to play as Lightning and introduces a new battles system which gives the gamer more control over the action.

Dark

Systems: XBOX 360, PC; Release Date: June 2013

While perhaps not a fully-fledged RPG game, this stealth action game has plenty of RPG elements to keep the RPG fan happy. You take on the role of a vampire and stalk your enemies from the shadows. The story within the game is very dark and immersive – the world of intrigue that you enter is one of power, blood and darkness.

The graphics and sound are exceptionally atmospheric and will really add a lot to the game. The overall concept isn’t new, having been done really well with the Assassin’s Creed series, but the introduction of a vampire and the atmosphere created by the graphics and sound make this into an intriguing addition to the RPG portfolio.
