Lego for 6 Year Olds
Lego is a brilliant toy for children of all ages and especially for 6 year old boys. First, they get to work on a project building up a lego set and then they get to enjoy playing with their creation.
Lego can help build confidence as 6 year olds will get a great sense of achievement through working on and completing a lego project. Following the lego instructions can also help build literacy and comprehension skills. Lego is also great for encouraging creativity and imagination.
6 year old boys will play with lego toys for ages and there are lots of them available on the market. Lego superhero sets are popular with this age group but also look out for the lego creator 3 in 1 sets (where one set can build three different things). The lego 3 in 1 set below builds into a robot, car or thunder wings.
This set is super value as it can build into 3 different objects (thunder wings, trobot or futuristic concept car.)
The robot stands over 6" (17cm) tall when its built and features wings, dual antenna and poseable limbs.
The concept car features large engine and angled spoiler.
It is aimed at 7 plus. My own 6 year old built it with some help and really loved doing it.
This is a great superheros set with some cool minifigures including batman, nightwing and man bat minifigures.
There is some nice detail in the set with a batcopter with opening cockpit, spinning rotors, 2 flick missiles and a working winch and hook.
This set is currently excellent value too and is aimed for aged 6 plus.
Turtle Toys for 6 Year Old Boys
Many six year old boys love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles especially as the movie has just been released. If they like the show they're is lots of turtle figures and other toys they will also love.
As we're on the theme of legos, turtle fans will love the lego set featured opposite. It includes 2 minifigures: Raphael, Foot Soldier and 1 character Fishface. It's aimed at kids from aged 6 which is the perfect age so 6 year olds should be able to build it with minimum help. Once they've finished building it, they can have lots of fun playing with it as well.
More Construction Toys
If your favorite 6 year old love legos but you're looking for something a bit different, there are lots of construction toys that are perfect for 6 year old boys. My son has always loved building and playing with his creations and we have tried out a lot of different toys.
Some ideas include marble runs tinkertoy, gears, gears, gears, magna tiles, wedgits and marble runs.
Also check out the magformers below.
Magformers are magnetic toys that you can use to build all kinds of 3D constructions from towers, spaceships, 3D shapes, houses, stars - whatever you can imagine you can create. Check out the video below to see more.

Marble runs are such fun toys. Build a unique marble run and have fun running the marbles down them afterwards.
This marble run featured opposite has 123 pieces so you can build some interesting structures.
This is a motorized Gears, Gears, Gears, set. It comes with instructions to build three exciting models: a race car, an airplane and a repositionable motorcycle. But you can build your own creations as well. It's great for getting kids interested in building, engineering and creating. And creating the constructions also helps concentration and problem solving skills. It's also good for giving kids a sense of achievement when they can see what they have built works.
It's aimed for kids from age 6 although some 6 year olds may need a little bit of help to buid the constructions at first.
There are lots of cool spy gear gadgets that 6 year olds will love playing with including spy watches and night vision goggles.
The spy goggles are lots of fun. The lightweight blue lenses have bright blue LEDs that help you see up to 25 feet in the dark, while the retractable scope magnifies your view through a yellow crosshair lens.
Another really cool spy gear toy is the lazer tripwire.
I love this, it looks like lots of fun. You can use it in spy games or just to protect your most valuable stuff in your room. Set up the lazers and when they are tripped an alarm will go off. They are great for playing practical jokes as well!
If you're looking for outdoor toys why not check out a bow and arrow like. the Air Hunterz bow opposite.
This set can shoot arrows over 125 feet. It shoots foam darts so you don't have to worry about anybody getting hurt.
I'm sure it won't be just the boys queuing up to have a go. Siblings, friends and even Mom and Dad will want to get in on the action. Great for target practice or just seeing how far you can shoot the arrows. Lots of fun!
Games for 6 Year Old Boys
At six years old, boys are just the right age to begin playing a number of classic games. Games are great for re-inforcing and introducing social skills including taking turns and losing and winning with dignity and grace!! Most of these games teach and improve other skills too
Monopoly Junior is a great way to introduce younger kids to Monopoly. And parents will enjoy playing the game more than other games aimed at this age group as it will engage them too.
It's aimed for kids aged 5 to 8, it's easy to play and it finishes a lot more quickly than the standard Monopoly so it keeps kids attention.
Remote Control Cars and Racing Tracks
Most six year old boys love cars and remote control cars are tons of fun. All the family will want to have a go at running the car around the house and outside.
There are lots of great racing tracks available too. These are really good for family participation. Fathers can race sons, brothers can race sisters, Moms can race Dads. I especially like the hot wheels track builder set below.
This is a great starter set and you can configure the track in different ways which is great for creativity. As you can see if features two loops but there are two other car activated stunts as well.
Many 6 year old boys love playing superheros and with action figures.
One hot toy at the moment is the Power Rangers Megazord figure below.
The big colorful figure consists of five separate creatures (zords) which you can take apart to play with separately. You can then put them back together again to make the megazord.
Insert a key to open a chest comparment in the big figure.
More Outdoor Toys
6 year old boys are full of energy and Summer is a great time to get them outdoors, running around and having lots of exercise. There are lots of cool toys to encourage this. Here are some top ideas:
Throw and catch toys - there are lots of toys that can add extra fun to the game of catch.
Scooters - scooters are fun and provide opportunity for lots of exercise.
Swingball set - this is a classic backyard toy that parents may remember from their own childhood. Great for hand and eye co-ordination. It can be played by one person on their own but it's a great game for parents to have a go with their children or for when other kids come around to play.
At 6 years old boys will be able to have a go at frisbee. See how far you can throw it. Or throw it between two or more people.
It was around 6 years of age that my son first picked up a nerf gun and he loves playing with them with his friends. They're great fun to play nerf gun wars with their friends or to shoot targets.
I like the nerf guns with the foam darts (rather than the guns that shoot the discs) for the younger kids like the nerf N-Strike Elite Rampage featured opposite. It comes with 25 darts (which is great as there are always som that get lost). The gun can shoot darts up to 75 feet.
Hot Toys for 2014
They're quite a few new toys coming out in time for Christmas 2014 that 6 year old boys will love. Here are a couple of my favorites below.
Zoomer Dino is a really fun interactive toy. It will wander around the house displaying his funny personality. Be careful, because you can make him angry especially if you pull his tail. His eyes change color and he roars. But he has a very happy side as well. You can train him to dance, chomp, stomp and roar but if you want complete control there is a remote too.
A really fun toy which already has great reviews.
The Vtech smart watch will help you learn to tell the time with 50 different clock faces but it does so much more as well. Take photos and videos, use the voice recorder and add wacky effects to your voice as well as play the four learning games.
