Doll houses

When I was a kid, I was a real tomboy, even though my mother was determined to make me a prissy little girl. Her efforts failed miserably, however. I wanted to be like my older brother, so I often played with his football, his basketball, and his other “boy stuff.” I rarely played with the baby dolls my mom always got me for Christmas – except for when I tied them to a stake as part of a cowboys-and-Indians foray.

One of the few “girlie” toys I did play with was my doll house. It was a metal two-story Victorian doll house, complete with dollhouse furniture and a family of dollhouse dolls. I’d spend hours arranging and rearranging the furniture and making up scenarios for Mr. and Mrs. Doll and their two children. My friends loved the big Victorian doll house, too, so we often played with it together.

When my girls were small, they had several doll houses, including wooden doll houses hubby made from doll house kits, all complete with doll house furniture and dollhouse people. My mom even crocheted little rugs and other dollhouse accessories to go in the doll houses. The girls would make doll neighborhoods with their doll houses, and they even used one as a school. Sometimes they’d create their own dollhouse accessories for the doll house suburb, like a swimming pool or a lake.

When the girls got a little older, they got into Barbie, so we had several Barbie doll houses, too. I remember waiting for the kids to go to bed on Christmas Eve to put the Barbie doll houses together and properly place all the dollhouse accessories.

Now my granddaughters have a doll house, so they’re following the doll house family tradition. Theirs is a Barbie doll house, and they have all kinds of neat stuff that goes with it. Lucky Barbie even has a pool, a hot tub, a patio set, and a cabana. I sure wish I’d had all that to go with my doll house!

A doll house is a wonderful gift for a girl, at almost any age. The doll houses below are appropriate for a wide range of ages, starting with toddlers and going up to pre-teens. Doll houses provide a great impetus for the imagination, and besides that, they’re just plain fun!

You can buy a doll house online, without having to leave your home. You’ll find a much larger selection here than you would in a toy store. Also, if you buy a doll house online, you’ll often find a discount, as well. Check out the great doll houses below. Some come complete with dollhouse furniture, and some come with furniture and a doll family. Some of these doll houses even have lights and sound! You can also click on the individual doll houses to find dollhouse accessories like a minivan, more dollhouse furniture, dollhouse dolls, patio furniture, and more goodies!

I had china doll house furniture, but I didn't have the doll house. A relative probably gave me the furniture when I was so young I can't remember. I bought wooden dollhouses and furniture for my daughters and had a good time painting and decorating. Actually, I had more fun than my daughters did, they were never really into it.

Thank you for such a lovely hub. I still got mine. It is all handmade and handpainted. It was during the war and somebody did this to get some more food.

Habee, as a child I didn't care for dolls either, but I loved my dollhouse. Rearranging the furniture was my favorite thing to do. Great hub, brings back good memories.

I love dollhouses. My brother purchased the Melissa and Doug Fold and Go Mini Doll house last year, and I have to say it was the perfect starter dollhouse. I think I play with it just as much as they do.:)

Habee, i didn't play with doll house too much when I was a child because I was kind of a tomboy also. There certainly have a wonderful selection now.

How cool - I didn't play much with dolls either except to show my little sister what Ken and Barbie could 'do' in their spare time....yikes. Now I wish I had been more of a little girlie girl...my Kate was though so it's all good! Neat ideas for Christmas....hint, hint, hint!

I have a beautiful doll house that we worked on for many years with our kids. It's in the attic now and I really need to take it down. Now who do I give it to? That's the problem.

Chris - you're joking, right?? I was the only girl on the boys' baseball team. I played basketball, too. And fished. And rode horses. And shot guns. And hunted.

I know but I so got my sister all wigged about it! I'd just take Ken and have him do the 'nasty' and bounce him all about - and we wonder why I was always in trouble! She was just such a prude! Good lord - lighten up! (Unfortunately she is still that way and it drives me bananas! but of course I would be perfect - oh my not in this lifetime)

Thanks for the great idea. My daughter's birthday is in two months. I think she would really enjoy having a doll house.
