LEGO City Trains was a sub theme of the much larger Lego City Theme which covered all aspects of the Train and Railway sets Lego produced. This theme was the successor to the original Lego 4.5v, Lego 9v and Lego 12v Train sets which originated when Lego moved the power supply to be internal rather than the original battery box and metal rails of the older sets. These City Train sets use an RC system and get their energy from batteries on board and are controlled via an Infrared remote control, these trains also use new non-electricity tracks. The Train sub theme began in 2007 and is still continuing into 2011.

The sets in this sub-theme varied from big sets with lots of pieces that took ages to build to the small minisets with just a small number of pieces designed to flesh out the railway landscape. This sub theme meant that Lego City expanded even further.
