Clash of Clans - 6 Simple Tips & Tactics to Help You Succeed!
Clash of Clans
What is Clash of Clans in a nutshell? It's a mobile, real time, massively multiplayer online game. The game is constantly in action if you're online or offline. This means that people can loot you and you make game progress even if you're not playing! The game is available on iPhone and Android (perhaps Windows phone?) and is what's commonly referred to as Freemium - Free to play, but you can opt to spend real money if you'd like to speed things up. The beauty about this game though is that you CAN be very successful and achieve healthy end game results without spending a dime! Here are 6 easy tips that will help you get the most enjoyment out of Clash of Clans!
ProTip #1 - Gems
As soon as you begin your Clash of Clans game, you will have in your account a stash of Gems. Gems in the game are essential! Cash buys Gems. You can speed up building/unit upgrades, rate your mines produce gold/elixer/dark elixer, speed up troop building, and buy extra builders. Now, it is crucial if you are planning on not spending any cash in game that you save your gems to only buy builders!
You can own 5 builder huts in game. The first one is free, the second one costs 250, the third is 500, fourth is 1000, and the fifth one is a whopping 2000 gems! It's going to take you a very a long time to accumulate 2000 gems, but it's really the only place you want to be spending these gems. This will be crucial in the long run of the game and will definitely speed things up a little!
Now, if you don't mind spending a little money on the game, I would not discourage you from picking up a few gems to get this process over and done with, though it's absolutely not necessary!
Side Tip: To gain higher amounts of Gems, regularly remove trees and stones from your property. They have a chance to yield over 1-5+ gems! Also, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow will yield extra gems!
ProTip #2 - Building
This is probably the biggest challenge for people. Slow play the game! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT rush to upgrade your Town Hall until you've maxed out all upgrades! Take your time playing the game. You won't be reaching end game results tomorrow unless you throw a lot of money at it. If you think this is a game you're going to "beat" in a short period of time, you're going to find yourself in a mess. Also, if you upgrade too fast, you're going to find yourself being robbed far too often. It is incredibly important that when you go to upgrade your Town Hall, everything including your walls be maxed out. I happen to have the 5 builders and the way I like to break down my build for optimized performance is as follows:
- 2x Builders towards Defensive Buildings
- 1x Builder towards Resources
- 1x Builder Towards Army Troops
- 1x Builder Open for Wall Improvements and Property Maintenance
If you have at least 3 builders, I recommend you always have 1x free builder constantly cleaning up the property and upgrading your wall every chance you get. Wall is definitely the most expensive and time consuming part of Clash of Clans. It's important to throw resources towards it every chance you get, or else as you advance in the game, you'll get flattened by larger players every chance they get. Furthermore, advanced walls will be crucial in winning team Wars!
Pro Tip #3 - Clans and Clan Wars
As much as starting your own clan or being a lone wolf might seem like a good thought, joining a solid clan is a much better idea! Before joining a clan, check what everyone's town hall levels are at. Visit your potential team members village and see what kind of a layout he has and what level his town hall is. This will give you a descent idea of the type of players on the team. Second of all, check the stats of the team. Are all the players actively donating? You want to see contributions of at least 100+ troops from most of the team. If there are 10 or 20 players on the team, and only 1 player is doing all the donations - well unfortunately, that's not the kind of team you want. Also make sure that whatever clan you do join, be: a) active in the chat b) donate as often as possible - BE A TEAM PLAYER!
You also need to consider Clan Wars. Clan Wars can be very profitable if you win! Check in Clan profile how many wins your potential clan has under its belt. This will give you an idea of how active the clan is. For clan wars, the game will chose the top 10 players in the clan. Try joining a clan with 15 or so players if possible, and if for whatever reason, you don't make it into the clan war, take it as a sign that you need to improve still. Don't jump ship at that point! Just work towards growing in the ranks. By winning clan wars, you will be award a certain amount of loot. Depending on how challenging the opponent is, your reward will vary. You only need to earn 1 star (of 3) to be eligible for the reward, and if the team is ahead of the game, you can fight an opponent that has already been whipped out 100% and earn only 1 star and STILL get the reward. Try to participate in as many battles as possible! It's well worth it!
As a side note, if you for instance join a Clan and your TH (town hall) is level 5 and the other 9 players have TH level 9, this is not necessarily a good choice for you. You will be matched up against other players in the war that will be much more difficult, and you might actually have a hard time getting any stars. Try to find a clan that has overall the same TH level as you, unless you are player #11 and are omitted from the Clan Wars!
Pro Tip #4 - Trophies & Loot
Trophies basically is a score that moves you up the ranks. The main purpose are bragging rights. Also if you are a very aggressive player, and your armies are well upgraded, you will find good players to loot the higher up the food chain you go. However, they can place you in different levels if you're participating in clan wars. I personally try to keep my trophy count lower. The main reason for this is that at higher levels, larger players will easily be able to destroy you and completely flatten your village. If you keep to lower level attacks, other players may only be able to get 1 or 2 stars and you won't be attacked as often. Also note, I am not always able to play, so I wouldn't consider myself a very aggressive player at this point (all depends on my time management). If I know I'm going to have a lot of time to spare, I'll quickly go up the ranks to find the more lucrative players.
When farming for trophies, look for bases that have the Town Hall placed outside the walls and is an easy target. This will automatically give you a 1 star and you will get a good amount of trophies. If you're looking to drop your trophy count, the easiest thing to do is attack with 1 troop and then abandon the fight (or wait for the counter to run down and then abandon the fight).
Side note, when farming players for resources, look for players that have full mines and elixer pumps. These will give you the largest amount of loot! Reserves can be lucrative, but you only get 5% of what they are holding.
Pro Tip #5 - Base Layout
The layout of your base can make a huge difference in your play style! The best resources I've found to date is a website called clashofclansbuilder.com
On the site you will have 2 primary options to work with. Base Type and Base Level. It's incredibly easy to use! Under Base Level, select the Town Hall level you are at. Under Base Type, you can select between Farming, Defense, Hybrid, Clan War, Dark Elixer Hoarding, Resource Hording, and Trap Defense.
Farming, Defense, and Clan War are in my opinion the most important ones. Farming basically means you don't care about trophies. You just care to collect resources from other players. So basically you will focus on defending your resources and placing your Town Hall in the open. Defense means you are protecting your Town Hall from attacks in order to have a higher chance to win against attackers. This will make it easier for you not to drop trophies.
If anything though, it is VERY important that you use a proper Clan War base layout. Even if you're not participating in the war for whatever reason, you at least have the best defense possible and you aren't a burden to your team. Basically you want to protect your Town Hall at all costs! Also note that you can have a separate base layout for the Clan Wars. This is a very nice feature that was added into the game. Clan Wars are separate from your normal game.

Pro Tip #6: Army Composition and Spells
Army composition is a tricky one. There are so many options and combos out there that I don't know where to start!
The best advice I can give you is: CONSTANTLY BE UPGRADING YOUR TROOPS AND SPELLS!
Obviously focus on the ones you use the most. Goblins are definitely my favorite unit for farming. They are fast, cheap, and swift! You don't even need to clean someone out to profit! I often just drop a handful of troops, get what I can and leave. As long as I'm profiting, I'm good!
A really good combo though are Giants and Healers - deadly combination. I usually build around 20 Giants, 3 Healers, and the rest are Goblins. I like to carry Rage or Lightning Bolts in my arsenal of spells, and I usually target the anti-air defenses first so that my healers have a greater chance of survival.
Of course, play with what works best for you! All troops have advantages and disadvantages. You'll soon get a feel for what works best for you.
I hope these beginner tips have given you something to think about! Please feel free to post your thoughts on my article. I like to think I've covered all the bases for people just starting out or not really getting an idea of what's going on or how to properly progress. I know I see a lot of lost players out there!
I'd love to see comments of what your favorite army composition is! Also feel free to post your Clan Name and hopefully some newbie players can find their way to a good group!
Cheers and good luck!
Also note that Cheats and Hacks for this game are seen virtually everywhere. The best cheat and hack though for Clash of Clans does not exist! So don't waste your time trying to crack the system!
