Collecting Collectables for a Printer Drawer
My Printer Drawer with the collection so far
What is a Printer Drawer?
"Wait until you see what I've got, you'll want one"
That's what my sister informed me on the telephone before we arrived. Yes, that had me sitting up and taking notice!
She led me into the sitting room and there it was on the wall, she proudly pointed at it and announced my 'Printer Drawer'
Initially I was taken aback, not sure what I was expecting but this was quite a surprise.
My sister explained she had some small pill boxes she wanted to display, but wasn't sure how and after searching on the internet for ideas, found that people were buying old printer drawers and using the little compartments to display small items.
It grabbed my interest immediately and I found my curiousity aroused looking at all the little trinkets she had displayed on there.
Years ago, the different letterpress letters would be placed in the small compartments for typesetting. These drawers have stayed in remarkably good condition over the years, they were beautifully made. Although they are drawers and were used horizontally, they work perfectly upright hung on a wall.
Searching on the internet later myself I found that people did indeed use them to collect all kinds of things!
I had to have one......
A Printer Drawer purchased
My Printer Drawer
I started my search on the internet and found printer drawers were indeed very popular and there are quite a few websites that sell them.
However, they varied in condition and I decided I would prefer to actually see the drawer before I purchased it, also taking postage into consideration that bumped the price up and I do like to get a bargain wherever I can! I decided to scour the antique shops and flea markets.
I found one in an antique shop, bigger than I had innitally intended but I liked the price £30.00 and bought it.
Of course, after fitting a couple of small wall brackets the drawer is ready to go, but I decided to put 'my mark' on it so to speak!
I removed the metal facing and handle and sanded it smooth and then stained it. It took a couple of coats and was rather time consuming getting into all the little corners, but I felt it was worthwhile.
You can display your drawers horizontally or vertically which ever suits your chosen position best.
Finding Collectables for your Printer Drawer
Now for the fun bit!
If like me you are working to a budget, you may want to give the antique shops a miss, they can be a little pricey. Understandably so, they have their outgoings and they know what they are selling.
Believe me, you are more likely to get a bargain from a flea market, or boot sale and it's far more satisfying to pay just a few pence for something.
I have bought things that I haven't understood what they are, but they just seem a little different, perhaps heavier than they should be or perhaps there is a hole there for something?
The following two photos are a good example.
Pencil Sharpener and Bottle Opener
The Printer Drawer is an investment
I paid just a few pence for the Play Me stove pencil sharpener and Black & White gravity bottle opener.
And what fun it is to return home with the goods, do the research on the internet and find that they are collectables and worth pounds not pence - so quite a profit and investment.
A Few of my Purchased Collectable Bargains
Initially I thought it a good idea to display items I have tucked away in drawers, mostly of sentimental value, but previously I had nowhere to display them.
We have displayed my dancing medals, my husband's football medal and his Grandad's WW1 army cap badge, my Granny's brooch and ring. How lovely it is to see them displayed there, they all hold precious memories to us.
There are lots of compartments to fill, over 100 in total. Printer drawers come in all sizes and you can get them much smaller.
The Collecting Begins
A New Hobby
If you are looking for a new hobby or interest, I would recommend buying a printer drawer.
Collecting is exciting and rewarding and soon becomes addictive fun!
There are thousands of small collectable items suitable for a printer drawer out there, it's great fun finding something that little bit special.
I love cleaning my newly purchased items and seeing them shine!
Researching on the internet for what to buy and also reserching what you have bought, you may be, like me pleasantly surprised.
