Come Swing With Me

Playing outside is a great way for kids to stay active.

Ready...Set...Swing!

This time of year, most kids are itching to go outside and play.  After being cooped up in the house all winter, who blames them?  Swingsets offer children a variety of activities that promote physical movement and endless hours of entertainment.

My Recommendation

Little Tikes Swing Along Castle
Little Tikes Swing Along Castle

Your tiny knight or princess will enjoy playing on the whimsical Little Tikes Swing along Castle. A fun telescope swivels 360 degree and the sturdy swing includes a 3-point safety belt. The gently sloping slide is built for soft landings, while a simple climbing wall offers extra fun for beginning explorers. The captain's wheel and cutouts for holding on or playing peek-a-boo add to the appeal of this inside or outdoor play set. It can be assembled in less than 20 minutes. It measures 50.25 H x58.5 W x41.25 D"

Before You Begin...PLAN

Planning to set up a swing set, before actually beginning, will take a lot of the frustration out of the process and make the whole process go more smoothly. First, measure the space that you have for the swing set, as some of them can be quite large. Next, decide how much money you are willing to spend. Setting a limit in the purchase amount will ensure that you do not go over the budget you have allowed yourself. Be prepared, because some swing sets can be quite expensive, especially if you are going all out with the accessories.

Once you have the size and the price all set, you will have to decide if you want a wood, metal, or plastic swing set. Most people prefer wood because of its longevity, however metal swing sets are just as popular as they were 20 years ago. If you have young children, little plastic swing sets are ideal because they sit low to the ground, but still offer many of the same features of a regular swing set.

You will also have to decide which accessories you would like on the swing set. Different styles offer different accessories. Some let you pick and choose which ones you would like, while others are pre-chosen. Many have additional attachments that you can add on to the original set. For example, a baby swing could replace or be added to the frame so that baby can play too!

Do It Yourself

Scout Custom DIY Play Set Hardware Kit (wood not included)
Scout Custom DIY Play Set Hardware Kit (wood not included)

The Scout is a Custom Ready-To-Build Swing Set Kit designed for the Do-It-Yourself family. Customize this swing beam with three different design options. It's up to you - simply choose your accessories, lumber and nails/screws. NOTE: Lumber, slide and accessories sold separately.

Safety

Aside from planning what size and type of swing set you want, you need to consider safety. All of the pieces and hardware should be in a safe and working condition. Try to avoid sets that have sharp edges and corners and this could be dangerous. Make sure that the wood, metal, or plastic is durable and can stand the weather elements over time.

Some swing sets are sold in kits that require you to purchase your own hardware and lumber.  This may be a good option because it will allow you too choose the safest and more durable materials for the project.  It also allows for more customization.

With the proper planning and safety considerations taken into account, your children will be begging to go outside and play once a brand new swing set is installed. Now, if you only had room for one in the house.....

I LOVE swings - always have. I still go to the playground and swing sometimes. If it's busy I get a whole range of looks, from kids and adults who think it's funny or great, to strange looks like "What is that woman doing on the swings". Having fun! Great hub.

Like Katrina, I STILL love swings. But I am willing to wait until the kids play in the park...sometimes! :)

Thanks for such a fun hub.

Very nice. I remember we used to "tip" the metal swing set, by swinging so hhigh, until we got caught, then the neighbors dad sunk the ends in concrete! LOL.
