Famous stamp collectors list below include both famous people who collect stamps and some famous collectors who might not be known by the general public.

John Lennon

John Lennon began his hobby at the age of 10, collecting 550 stamps from several countries including India, the United States and New Zealand. The collection was bought by the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington DC USA for $53,000 in 2005.

 Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury was a British musician, best known as the lead vocalist and songwriter of the rock band Queen. Freddie Mercury collected stamps as a child his stamp collection was aquired by the National Postal Museum  (in the United Kingdom) for £3,220 plus VAT in 1993.

 Ronnie Wood

Ronnie Wood  the lead guitarist of The Rolling Stones took up stamp collecting as he gave up alcohol and found life boring. Ronnie Wood is set to fascinated by stamp collecting and is building up an impressive collection of rare stamps.

Apparently she is not too happy about her hobby of stamp collecting coming out . She states  "Oh, God, stop. Every one's calling me a dork now, We're getting emails from, like, stamp collecting magazines asking if I can do an interview. I mean, it's just a hobby," said Sharapova. Her agent has banned her from talking about her stamp collecting as he  worried it will make her look like a nerd and not fit into the image he is trying to build of her.

Jawaharlal Nehru Indian statesman who was the first (and to date the longest-serving) Prime Minister of India, from 1947 until 1964 was a keen stamp collector.

Former presidential aide to George Bush Karl Rove collects stamps when asked if he had any rare stamps in his collection, he conceded that he did not.

Colonel Edward Howland Robinson Green (aka Colonel Green) (B 1868 –  D1936), the son of the miser Hetty Green (known as the witch of wall street), and the heir to her fortune of $150 million. He was an enthusiastic stamp collector who stamp collection at the time rivalled the collection of King George V.

 

 

Robert Elisabeth Stolz (25 August 1880 – 27 June 1975) was an Austrian songwriter and conductor as well as a composer of operettas and film music. He was a known stamp collector.

General Matthew Ridgway (1895 – 1993) was a United States Army General most famous for his efforts in the Korean war his stamp collection is in the Spellman museum.

Sir Ernest de Silva (26 November 1887—9 May 1957) was a Sri Lankan business magnate, banker, barrister and public figure, considered to be the most prominent Sri Lankan philanthropist of the 20th century. He was a notable stamp collector.

Ayn Rand (1905- 1982)  Russian-American novelist, philosopher,playwright, and screenwriter.She was to known to collect stamps.

World Famous  violinist  Jascha Heifetz was topical or thematic collector who mainly collected stamps depicting music. His collection is in the Spellman Museum.

Theodore E. Steinway

Theodore E. Steinway (1883-1957), of the famous Steinway piano family, was a member of the Collectors Club of New York and Board of Trustees of the Philatelic Foundation. In 1952, was awarded the first Lichtenstein Medal for his efforts in the field of philately as well as his contributions to the growth and prestige of the Collectors Club. Mr. Steinway was perhaps the first prominent stamp collector to embrace topical or "thematic" collecting. He not surprisingly mainly collected stamps depicting music.

Francis Spellman

Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman (1889 — 1967) Archbishop of New York from 1939 to 1967, he was created a cardinal in 1946. He was a topical collector who collected stamps depicting religion. His collection is in the Spellman museum.

Baron Arthur de Rothschild 

Baron Arthur de Rothschild  (April 25, 1851 -  1903) was part of the French branch of the prominent Rothschild family. He began collecting stamps in his teens. He became a prominent collector and wrote a book on the subject.

Agathon Fabergé

Agathon Fabergé was the son of Carl Fabergé and a member of the family that owned the famous Russian jewellery firm. The House of Fabergé was nationalised by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Most of the family members managed to escape Russia but Agathon was arrested by the Bolsheviks and put in jail. He was in prison until 1927 when he managed to escape to Finland. In Finland he became a renowned stamp collector.

 Anatoly Karpov

Anatoly  Karpov  is a Soviet and Russian chess grandmaster and former World chess Champion. He is passionate about collecting stamps he states "For me philately must not be an individual, ‘secret’ hobby. It gives me the opportunity to meet a lot of people internationally, interesting people out of the chess world, and it remains one of the most satisfying parts of my life."

In 1953 it was Wiesenthal who discovered that Eichmann had fled to Argentina - as a consequence of his sole relaxation, stamp collecting. Baron Mast, a fellow collector of stamps, showed him a letter from a former Wehrmacht friend in Buenos Aires. The writer recounted that he had met some acquaintances from their regiment, and continued: "Imagine whom else I saw… that dreadful swine Eichmann who commanded the Jews. He lives near Buenos Aires and works for a water company."

 Philipp von Ferrary

Philipp von Ferrary (1850 - May 20, 1917) was a legendary stamp collector, assembling probably the most complete worldwide collection that ever existed, or is likely to exist. Amongst his extremely rare stamps were the unique Treskilling Yellow of Sweden and the 1856 one-cent "Black on Magenta" of British Guiana. No person since has owned both these stamps at the same time.

 


John Eleuthère duPont (1938-2010) was an American billionaire and member of the prominent du Pont family. In 1997, DuPont was convicted of murdering Olympic Gold Medalist wrestler Dave Schultz the year before and sentenced to 13 to 40 years in prison. Among his interests was a passion for stamp collecting. He died in prison on December 9, 2010. In a 1980 auction he paid $935,000 for one of the rarest stamps in the world, the British Guiana 1856 1c black on magenta pictured above. This stamp is set to be worth 5 - 6 million dollars now. His estate is still in possession of the stamp.
