Fire Emblem: Awakening Units - Tharja Info

Source

Introduction

This hub is going to talk about Tharja, the first of two Dark Mages that you can recruit in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Dark Mages are widely considered by the greater portion of the Fire Emblem fan community to be the most broken class of Awakening. Most of this stems from their ability to use Dark Magic (and specifically, the dark magic tome Nosferatu), and the rest from the fact that they have high Defense and HP growths for their archetype (offensive spellcaster).

About the only thing that keeps Tharja from just destroying all possible enemies is her low Skill growth, which means that her accuracy will usually be on the low side. Or rather, it would be if she didn't have two skills that specifically (three if you have Sorcerer Tharja against enemy tome-users) lower her enemy's ability to evade her attacks.

So yeah, Tharja is a bit ridiculous.

Overview

So, who is Tharja?

Tharja is a Dark Mage in the employ of Plegia. However, she seems uninterested in the greater struggle between Plegia and Ylisse. Her main character trait is her total distrust of just about anyone (except a Male My Unit, whom she stalks with a passion) and her fascination with cursing anyone and anything that rubs her the wrong way. In game terms, she is a member of perhaps the best class in Fire Emblem: Awakening, bar none.

Where can I get Tharja?

Tharja starts as an enemy unit in the southeastern part of Chapter 9's map. Libra starts relatively close to her, so be careful that he doesn't chop her to bits before you can get Chrom to talk to the both of them (A Rescue Staff is beautiful for warping Libra closer to Chrom and, by extension, away from Tharja).

Why should I use Tharja?

Short Answer: Dark Mages are ridiculous.

Longer Answer: Contrary to what you would assume, Dark Mages can use all types of tomes. In essence, they are Mages that can also use Dark tomes. However, what is particularly devious is the fact that they have better HP and Defense growths than conventional Mages, which makes Tharja tankier than almost every other magic-user in your army..

Should I use a Second Seal on Tharja?

No! Dark Magic is really powerful and should most definitely be used. To make matters worse, there are no possible alternate classes for Tharja that can use tomes (or staves, if you're worried about having some use for that Magic stat). Just plop a Nosferatu on Tharja and take your enemies to town!

Tharja outperforms pretty much any Mage worth talking about in terms of HP and Defense growths, and the only negatives she has to show for it are slightly reduced Resistance growths as compared to a vanilla Mage and a sub-par Skill growth (which, as mentioned previously, isn't nearly as bad as it would be normally thanks to the two skills she gets as a Dark Mage).

Also, it seems that Sorcerers lose 5% of their HP and Strength growths on promotion, not that they need the Strength, but that inferior HP growth on promotion is a real head-scratcher. They do gain another 5% to Magic though, which is always awesome.

The skills of a Dark Mage are all about preventing their enemies from avoiding attacks. Dark Mages start with Hex, that lowers the Avoid of all adjacent enemies by 15. Adjacent to enemies seems like a bad place to be for a caster, but remember that Dark Mages can take it. Dark Mages with Nosferatu...let's not even go there. Anathema grants an aura that reduces the Avoid and Critical Avoid of all enemies within a 3 tile radius by 10. So, an adjacent enemy will have -25 Avoid against a Dark Mage that is at least Level 10.

Where you take Tharja on promotion is up for grabs, but do keep in mind that Dark Knight loses the ability to use Dark Magic tomes (that caught a few people by surprise the first few days after Fire Emblem: Awakening was released and they started promoting their Dark Mages). With that said, Vengeance isn't that good on Tharja since it has a Skill-based chance, and Tharja tends to have low Skill. Even so, the Sorcerer line has Tomebreaker, which basically makes you auto-win confrontations against enemy Mages by lowering their Hit chance by 50% and increasing your Avoid chance by the same amount..

As if you needed the help!

Tips and Tricks for using Tharja

  • Use Nosferatu whenever feasibly possible. Nosferatu is the most broken tome in what is the most broken category of magic in Fire Emblem: Awakening. What makes Nosferatu so insanely powerful? Well, it heals the user for half of the damage dealt against an enemy unit. In other words, Nosferatu has an inherent Sol effect that triggers 100% of the time you deal damage. Considering that the legendary weapon named Sol only has the regular chance to trigger its effect (Skill%, for the curious), this should tell you how much stronger Nosferatu is than any other equivalent weapon or tome. That's without considering that you can buy Nosferatu Tomes from shops after a certain point of the game!
  • Have another caster of your choice Pair Up with Tharja and see her damage potential and sustainability increase even beyond what you originally imagined.
  • Don't forget that Dark Mages can use other types of tomes too. Wind tomes are a common favorite for when I want Tharja to take out enemy fliers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Tharja is one of the most effective casters you will recruit during Fire Emblem: Awakening. For that reason alone, she deserves a spot on your team. I stopped using Miriel and Ricken completely around the time that I recruited both Tharja and the second Dark Mage (you get him in Chapter 13, if you want to plan around that). The negatives of using the Dark Mages are heavily outweighted by the many positives. Having sustainability on your units is something that is priceless, especially in the later chapters where the game floods you with enemy reinforcements.

Of course, having a tome with a Sol effect that always triggers probably has a little to do with that.

Feel free to talk about Tharja and things related to her in the comments section. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions if something in this hub is unclear!

Until the next time, take care and have fun! ;)

i made her a dark knight but just for lifetaker when she gets to level 15 im going to change her into sorcerer, do you think it will work?

I'm sure it will. It'll take you more time to get her levels once you make her a Sorcerer, but you can compensate by grinding. :)

thx i did the same thing with cherche and henry and they are great!

Another reason why dark mages are so incredibly good is mire, the only attack that has a range of over 3, letting you take cheap shots at enemies at the start of a match.

Not to mention that you can buy unlimited mire's from spotpass characters.

Winterfate if i team tharja up with me how many reeking boxes will i need? And do you know any cheats for FEA?

Reeking Boxes, I have no idea to be honest. I played through the game on Hard where Reeking Boxes are too expensive to use as a grinding tool (they cost 4800 gold on Hard).

Cheats as in codes and the like? I can't say that I do. I suppose you could try to find one of those hex editors like Action Replay or something, but I haven't seen any of those for the 3DS.

The closest thing to a cheat is the trio of downloadable content maps that make grinding easier, especially the first two that give a LOT of gold and experience, respectively. But, those cost $$$.

So I'm new to Fire Emblem, and I feel like I'm getting the hang of the marriage thing, passing down skills and stats etc. I was just wondering, how would it work if a certain character was already married to my unit and had a child? For example, My Unit is married to Tharja and they had Morgan as their child. To obtain Noire, whose mother is Tharja, do I just get the support up to S with another character? Does the marriage with my unit go away? Thanks for the help!

My Unit would be the father of both Morgan and Noire in that case. :)

It's the same thing with Chrom and any of his potential wives. If you have Chrom marry Olivia for example, Inigo will be Chrom's son.

Well Acually it is Good to Second seal her to an Archer/Sniper to bring up her Skill Stat. Does wonders.

Wanna know a good way to circumvent Tharja's low Skill and thus accuracy? Reclass her into an Archer and then a Sniper. Hit +20 and the Skill emphasis of the classes fixes that right up. Just be ready to work with her low Strength.
