Gaming Gift Ideas

The life force of any serious gamer is their computer. Most gamers make their own rig by piecing together the very best of whatever they can afford.

What do gamers think about their computer?

Even though it's part of them, their computer is not fast enough and their equipment is not good enough, no "true" gamer's ever is, but even a slight modification could give them an edge they need while gaming. The truth is that they think about it constantly and sometimes even while you are talking to them! This is why a hardware upgrade is definitely the best gamer gift!

When gaming, the hardware that you have is essential as it can make or break whether your team is successful or not. Remember that gamers are ub3r competitive. Whether they win or lose can affect their attitude for entire weeks at a time. Besides, who wants to lose on the battlefield just because their computer crashes? Even worse is when they let their friends down!

Video Card

The most essential piece of hardware for any gamer is their video card. Video cards with a lot of memory improve the speed of a computer, while allowing it to show images faster than a slower one. A bad video card can make a game choppy or force you to turn down the specifications on a game. Doing this doesn't allow you to experience the game in it's full glory like every gamer wants. In summary, gaming begins and ends with your video card. Without going into too much detail, the featured video card should handle ANY game that a gamer would come across in this point in time. If it's a little over your price range, then consider finding a model just beneath this one. Most video cards in the $100-150 range do a great job at running any current games. The only issue is that another upgrade would be mandatory within a year or two to allow them to play all of their games.

Ram

If they already have a nice video card, the next step to improving overall game performance would be a ram upgrade.

Something other than hardware?

If you want to get them something other than hardware, or if these items are out of your price range, I've listed some less expensive options below! I've also written hubs on the best electronic gifts and best gifts of 2014 that might give you some additional ideas as well.

Gaming Headsets

Start with the headset as besides computer performance, communication between a gamer's teammates is the next most important thing.

*Tip - Remember, this is how they socially interact, so you might just get a hug if you purchase something like this X11 Amplified Stereo headset from Ear Force. If they've been playing all night, then I might suggest hugging them the "next" day.

Gaming Mouse

For a mouse under $100, I would go with the logitech wireless gaming mouse. It comes with 13 programmable buttons to help you perform intricate macros, and is full-speed wireless at 1,000 reports per second. This will give you both the responsiveness you need with the freedom from cords that you've been looking for.
