Ghost Hunting 101: Using a K2 milliGauss Meter

During an episode of "Ghost Hunters", Jason and Grant, founders of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), invited psychic medium Chris Fleming to accompany the team on the investigation of a home on Cielo Drive. Located in Hollywood, California, this road was the site of the infamous Manson murders of 1969, wherein cult members entered the home of starlet Sharon Tate and brutally killed her, her unborn child, and four of her close friends. This particular house, along with several others on the same road, is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of Sharon, her friend Jay Sebring, and the others. This area was also the location of a number of suicides, as well as Indian deaths and burials. The homeowner, Dave Oman, and his acquaintences report hearing footsteps and voices, and Dave awoke one night to see an apparition standing at the foot of his bed pointing towards the direction of the driveway. He didn't recognize the man at the time, but three months later while researching the area, he came across a photo of Mr. Sebring and identified him as the man who had manifested in his bedroom that night.

During the investigation, Chris decided to try out a new device that is currently all the rage in the paranormal community: a K2 (or K-II) meter. This handheld device is a special type of Electromagnetic Field (EMF) detector. An EMF detector locates and tracks energy sources, and picks up on fluctuations in electromagnetic fields in the surrounding environment. Because spirits are comprised of energy (since energy cannot be created nor destroyed) it is believed that when an anomaly is present, it disrupts this electromagnetic field. When you experience a cold spot in a haunted house, it is because whatever spirits are present need to absorb the energy around them in order to manifest (either physically or audibly.)

So the idea is that ghosts can actually communicate with the living by disturbing the electromagnetic fields that surround the K2 device. In the episode of "Ghost Hunters", for example, Chris told the spirits that they could answer his questions by making the meter flash twice for "yes" or once for "no". A previously inactive screen began lighting up with activity but only when he asked the questions. They even changed the batteries just to make sure the meter wasn't on the fritz, but fresh batteries produced the same results.

According to Grant:

"The K2 meter measures magnetic fields, and it's been specially calibrated for paranormal investigations. The theory behind the K2 meter is that if there's a spirit in the area, the K2 meter will pick up it's magnetic field. You can then train the spirits, supposedly, to intensify its magnetic field, therefore lighting up the lights on the meter."

Through their use of the K2, the investigators were able to establish that it was in fact Jay Sebring who haunted the home, along with the spirit of Sharon Tate. The ghost also announced that he had been contacted before, through the use of a Ouija board. Homeowner Dave Oman later confirmed this, saying that he and his friends had played with a Ouija board in the house not too long ago.

The difference between a K2 meter and a standard EMF detector is that the EMF detector uses a needle to indicate the presence of energy (when the needle jumps up between 2.0 and 7.0, it is indicative of a nearby energy source) whereas the K2 uses a series of LED lights (green-yellow-orange-red.) Unless you choose to lower the volume, a regular EMF detector will beep when turned on or when it detects a change in frequency. The K2 meter is soundless, making it great for ghost hunting investigations where unnecessary noise is a distraction, and silence is a top priority.

Very interesting.

Will Blue Moon Paranormal be using a K2 in the future?

Definitely, Veronica. I was under the impression that K2s cost a couple hundred dollars, but after seeing them available for less than $60, I'll probably be picking one up.

I've never missed an episode of the Ghost Hunters, but the Sharon Tate one was the most difficult for me to watch; probably because, like everyone alive at the time, I read about the gruesome murders and remember them well. For some reason, watching a ghost hunt for events that happened in my life is a lot creepier than watching the hunt for ghosts from a hundred years ago. In any case - thanks for the great info on K2 - I'm going to pop over and check it out.

The big drawback, IMHO, to the K2 is that you have to constantly hold the button down when you are using it. This causes false signals because invariably, you will ease up pressure and at a certain point it will go off and back on. When the button is first pressed, you get a high reading for a moment. So if it goes off/on real fast, (due to easing pressure on the button), you will get a false positive read. And besides, after a while, it makes your thumb sore. I would rate this unit much higher if it had a normal on/off switch.

Darren 9 years ago

Yes, the only real draw back of the KII is the fact it uses a momentary switch for operation, requiring this to be held down by the operator. This can however be permanently overcome by doing a simple modification and adding a switch (see

This allows the KII to be placed away from anyone and may stengthen the value of results for some.

Darren, thank you SO much for that link to the modification switch. I was actually just out tonight using the K2 meter, and we picked up on something with it for the first time (other than electrical lines) but it was irritating having to hold down the button, especially in cold weather. I will definitely check this out. Thanks!

I see this thread is a little older, and this question may seem a bit off the wall, but I was wondering if anyone could give me the measurements of the circuit board inside the K2? I'm looking into purchasing one, to fit into a new shell.. Something a little more "original," and just need to know if the circuit board will fit into this new housing I have.

Hi JHSanny, thanks for your interest. My mother sells K2's on her ghost hunting website located at but I think you're looking for just the circuit board that goes inside the device? I searched everywhere to try and find the actual size, but no luck. Maybe someone else on here knows and could help us out??

Darren 9 years ago

Board is about 45mm x 75mm. Also re the mod above, it has the advantage of keeping the momentary switch fully functional when the switch is off. For those not ready to undertake the mod - the old trick was to shove a coin between the momentary switch and case to hold it down.

Fantastic! Thank you very much for the dimensions. I did see the mod, already have the page saved - and believe me when I say, the switch add on will be far easier than my next step in this process. Perhaps someone on here knows how to wire up a digital read out screen to this unit, in order to take more precise readings, in addition to keeping the LED read out ports? If not, perhaps you might know of someone I could get in touch with that could assist me in this process? The help has been greatly appreciated, and further help will likewise be appreciated!

One thing you can do instead of holding the thumb on the center is to place a coin into the top and upper corner which will apply enough pressure to hold it on and be more constant. This way you don't have to make any modifications etc.

K2 paranormal test. Ghost Hunters seem to like to be pretty thorough... they ask questions and get K2-based answers from ghosts. Let's try having them do K2-based spelling... like : what town are you from : is the first letter "A" -- is the first letter "B: etc...of course, the ghosts would have to be able to read/spell enough to get those questions.

Or just ask the ghost what a sign in the other room says (without the questioners knowing the answer in advance)...

Darren 8 years ago

Further on the K-II - It was asked before about a digital readout. Yes this should be possible - I am still testing a unit, details of which can be seen at: and

The public forum at has discussion on these.

The refresh rate of the digital meter causes it to be less responsive as the lights, however output could go to an AD Convertor and computer to enable data logging of the readings over an investigation.

Mike 8 years ago

Are you people not reading this article? Buy a 30 dollar EMF meter, its the same friggin thing.

This K-2 meters are a complete joke, they aren't specially calibrated for anything, they are just a stinkin EMF meter with lights. Shame on Ghost Hunters for endorsing such a fraudulent device. They are no better than that Chris Fleming idiot.

Stop making yourself look like an idiot with a blinking Ouija board and get back to tangible investigation techniques.

Darren 8 years ago

They are not the same thing ... that's the point - as you say they aren't calibrated like others (most 50-60Hz), but yes this causes specific problems and many false positives.

As far as use as a Ouija device - no different to anything else which can indicate variance - a pendulum, planchette or any model EMF meter for that matter!

By understanding items like the KII being used out in the field by many ... perhaps having one, pulling it apart and identifying all it's features/problems ... we can truly rate the device and any results obtained with it, and determine the most suitable technique to apply to its use. There have been quite a few tangible investigative groups studying the KII and I'd keep a look out for some of their findings - definitely not all positive!

Myself I prefer the TriField Natural ... but it's horses for courses, lot's good meters around!

Shadowstorm 8 years ago

I just bought a K2 meter on ebay that already had the switch modified on the side of the unit so you don't have to hold down the button. I also found a site that will modify the unit for you for $20....just seemed easier to find it already done on ebay. I am a skeptic but I think it will be interesting to play with and see what I get.

now what is needed is for some whizzkid to build a device around a number of emf meters, with a little screen.. with a meter to represent each of a-z and 1-9, activating those alphanumerics instead of activating lights, all in a laptop sized box, it surely would be possible to set up communication with spirits whereby they could use the meters to spell out what they are trying to say on screen. also included would be a configuration wizard which would measure existing, or background, emf levels and be able to filter it out. then again we could move to a stephen hawkin type of communication device where the spirit could choose words, not just letters.. its about time someone did some serious work with this.. if i was a wizzkid, i’d have done it years ago, sadly i’m not - but i would certainly be the first customer of such devices!

Tungsten 7 years ago

I have actually been looking at building a multi emf meter using a 2-d and 3-d array of senssors with data logging. the output would have to be collected by a pc of some type. But I would like to have a real time display using tri-color LEDs in a 3d grid matrix. I need to be able to get real schematics or maybe reverse engeneer an emf meter. There is also the possability the individual circuits would interfere with each other. I'll no more with a better understanding of how they sence emf. I immagine it's just a change in current or resistivity through a coil.

I havn't read all the comments, but I just saw a few people complaining about the button, which may have already been pointed out already, but a penny jammed into it works perfectly(they do it on ghost hunters too)Mine finally came in the mail today and ive been having a blast with it, I havn't got to trying to find any ghosts yet though, since I havn't experianced anything here to make me want to

Hi. Can anyone tell me why ghost hunters on these programmes always work in the dark. Is it because the human mind is much more sensitive in a darkened area or because spirits prefer to mainfest in the dark.

Sam 7 years ago

They work in the dark because it heightens your other senses, and also because many reports involve light anomalies which are easier to see in the dark. Also, at night there are less people outside and less traffic, which cuts down on contamination, plus it cuts down on EMF because thing like lights, TVs, and other electronics are usually off at night and many electronics give off less EMF when off.

i just recently bought a k2 from ebay and cant wait to try it out i think as with everything its a case of trying to find what suits the job best this is the first emf meter i have ever owned and despite some people pulling it down i decied to give it a go and taking it to my local grave yard tonight hopefully :)

for many years now there have been many standing rewards of $1,000,000 for anyone with credible information proving the existence of ANY paranormal activity. to date no one has claimed these rewards despite the fact that the $1,000,000 is nothing compared to the fame and fortune that would come along with such information. the techniques on TAPS to show paranormal activity are completely unreliable, even they admit so much if you listen objectively. it's nice to believe but not to deceive yourselves.

build your own K2.

also look around and you might find other things to help you

Kingrydogg 7 years ago

I'm in a ghost team at I have a k2 meter of the first one. When it's flat... It's at 3 out of 5 lights or around 2.5 mG. But when it's straight up and down... It's 1 out of 5 lights or around 1.0 or lower. If you know why this happens then please reply. Thank You :)

Kingrydogg 7 years ago

What I mean of the first one above means that it's the first emf detector on the top of the page. Sorry about that. :)

Jay 6 years ago

First of all I have a KII Meter, an updated version with an on/off switch and I've already used on a few paranormal investigations.

I'm also a big fan of the GH TV show, the Manson murder episode was definitely fake though. Not faked by TAPS, but faked by the homeowner.

On everything. Do they not realize that electromagnetic fields across the surface of the earth are naturally not constant, especially in places where electrical appliances are?

geo walker 6 years ago

For those that don't know, the K2 meter picks up both electro magnetic energy and magnetic energy which are two different energies. One that is man made and one that comes from a natural mineral such as magnatite.

paperloader 5 years ago

I saw a show where a motel supposedly had a "haunted" room that they checked with a K2 meter. The ghost busters said the room was definitely haunted. What makes me doubt the validity of this was they did not check any of the other rooms that were not "haunted". Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.

Rochelle 5 years ago

In response to "paperloader" the technique of ghost hunting is very tedious, and we are going to spend the most time in the areas of the supposed haunting or where the most activity has been reported, most investigations take 6-8 hrs and if you were watching it on tv, then they are going to show the rooms where "possible activity" has been caught. You know for ratings and what not, they are cramming 6-8 hrs into 43 minutes, the other areas were possibly investigated but ratings say people wanna see activity, nothing else.

Caveman55 5 years ago

I have read the most part of this thread and there is much debate over the difference between and the legitamacy of the readings between the k2 meter and the infamous emf meter. There are various different arguments about the calibrations of Both devices with regard to what parameters of frequencies are Investigated. Be one with sound and a needle or be one with lights an silence. Surely it would be apt to use both devices simultaneously to register a common reading or at least a mean between the two. I believe they are set to certain wave lengths that are purported to be paranormal so should we not ten to a higher authority that is entrusted with the task of researching and deciding the optimum frequency. Is it the device, the practice use or the people behind it. I mean no of fence by my contribution to the sincere professional and the as if not more important amateur ghost hunter. I have watched too many Ghosthunting programs and am quite frankly bored, though I will say am still very much interested in the paranormal, come on world open up !! There's more to life than life, look further. I have always wanted to know where the files on my laptop go when I delete them ? They were also physical.

extreme paranormal investigators 4 years ago

This device isn't sheilded nor calibrated. Only good for finding possible sources and also good where there isn't any emf aka - in the woods.
