How to Choose the Right Weapon on Call of Duty

Intro

In this Hub I wil talk about how you should go about choosing the right weapons I will also compare weapons to your playing style, and allow you to have the best chance at success by following the guidelines I set out in writing this guide.

With that being said, please feel free to follow me on Twitter to know the most UP to Date guides for many video games, along with leaks to most of the most popular video games out there. This can be done at twitter.com/Johnrr631992, or @Johnrr631992 ...

Also you can ask questions on the xbox live network @ MKS JohnR space between the two.

ALSO!!! - I am starting a new clan. If you are reading this feel free to message me on Xbox Live, or on Twitter. As of now I am only open to people on Xbox, but will be moving multi-platform in December/January. So please feel free to contact me with questions. Also I will have a Website specifically for the clan, and it will be pretty big.

General weapons.

So obviously this guide can be applied throughout all of the Call Of Duty games. With that being said, I will try to give specific weapons, but will also keep it generalized as this guide will be able to be used on all platforms, for all games. This will mainly talk about classes of weapons, and what you should look at to succeed with those certain weapons.

Another thing is that, this is firstly my opinion, and I am also going to talk about depending on what your strategy is for in games what type of weapons you should use. Obviously no two gamers are alike, therefore what works for you is rarely going to work for someone else. So keep that in mind when telling your friends what guns they "need" to use. This is something a lot of people do, and in my opinion is a big mistake. This is forcing people to try new things, and making the whole gaming experience a lot more stressful for them. Overall you need to do what works best for you, and allow over time your gaming to develop, and to try new things. A real gamer does not have to stick to one gun, or one game type, and can play many game types, and use multiple weapons and still succeed.

Assault Rifles.

So the first category to talk about should be assault rifles. This is the most commonly used weapon, and overall is a very effective weapon in the game. So this leads me to talk about these weapons first.

Throughout the Call of Duty games, assault rifles have always been crucial in any game mode. This is a very versatile weapon that allows for smooth mobility, and good firepower, while also showing low recoil, and a good weapon to post up with if need be. This allows you to do a number of different roles throughout a game with an assault rifle. It will allow you to do any position on any objective based game mode, but also on a kill based game, give the power to keep the shots to take an enemy down at minimum.

Assault rifles are by fat the BEST weapons for most gamers in a first person shooter.
On Call of Duty 4, the M4 carbine was the best assault rifle, on Modern warfare 2 the best assault rifle was arguably the ACR, this was also the first time it was introduced on a Call of Duty game. Then on Black Ops, the Commando was the key gun that people fought for. And last but not least in Modern Warfare 3 you had the Fad/or ACR that were weapons that people love. These 2 are the most popular assault rifles in the game now.

Overall assault rifles are a key part of the Call of Duty game, and therefore I had to talk about them first.

Light Machine Guns

I am not talking about these next because they are my second favorite, but simply to get them out of the way. I understand that you must add LMG's to the game for the fact they are a crucial part of weapons history, BUT at the same time I have seen no effective use for them in the Call of Duty video game series. While they are fun to play with, take down helicopters, overall they are not a great gun to use for everyday playing. First off the movability with a light machine gun is awful. Next you have the noise with no silencer which is bound to give you away to anyone with a good headset. And lastly, the bullet damage is not much better than an assault rifle, so personally I do not see a reason for them. IF they had the power of a sniper rifle, and fully automatic, MAYBE but as they stand now, I personally do not see any reason that people are so obsessed with these weapons, nor do I see many people obsessed with them. if anything I think they are a gun that people use to show off with.

Sub Machine Guns.

This is arguably one of the most popular gun types right up there with assault rifles. These have been very popular in EVERY Call of Duty game, and are great for any game mode. A submachine gun offers a few things.

First.. Higher fire rate. The higher fire rate, while not crucial, allows for you to pump out many more bullets into a target over a time than other guns. Not to mention you can add rapid fire to the weapons to increase the fire rate even further. While the bullet damage may be less, pumping 10 bullets into a person in 3 seconds is more effective than 2 assault rifle rounds into that same person in that time.

Second.. movability. This is obviously the main reason people use submachine guns. They allow for a mobility that no other gun other than a pistol offers. You will be able to run and gun, or move around and have the fire rate that everyone looks for. This will also allow you to be extremely effective on any game mode.

Third... Effectiveness.. The effectiveness of a submachine gun is what truly sets it apart from anything else. The gun is extremely effective, and will allow you to shoot many targets constantly moving, and with a faster reload.

Overall the Submachine gun is PROBABLY the most popular type of gun used in the game, if not second to the assault rifle. It is a crucial element to any game, and allows the user to be a threat to any player.

Sniper Rifles

So I guess this category comes next. With sniper rifles, I have a love hate relationship. Personally I don't like them, but at the same time, they can be utilized correctly, and help a team greatly on certain game modes. At the same time, if you are playing domination, and someone is way off in the wrong area of the map with a sniper rifle, they can also ruin a team, and throw the game. So I think it all falls on how you use the sniper rifle. These are not for everyone, but players who care about their kill to death ratio more than anything else, this allows for perfect use. This will allow you to utilize the guns correctly and have success getting that all important (Sarcasm) number oh so high.

With that being said, if I am using a sniper rifle, I have always personally been a fan of semi automatic sniper rifles. In my opinion these allow for more firepower if you miss, allow you to quick shoot if someone gets close, and in my opinion is more fun. I think the only people who use bolt action sniper rifles are those who are trying to make quick shot or trick shot videos which is fairly annoying as well.

Shotguns

Shotguns in my opinion are the most useless weapon in the game. I think that these are used only to show off, and do not hold much effectiveness in the game. I also do not really see the point of using these guns as they are not effective, have bad range, and overall do not serve much purpose within the game. I think that I have listed many better choices above that you can use in the game to be successful, and that using a shotgun is the least successful. Most players use shotguns when fooling around, or showing off, or when the game comes out initially if there is an unfair advantage to using a shotgun.

Secondaries

I am glad that Black Ops 2 is making these optional, because I rarely use the secondary weapon unless I myself am fooling around, or am trying to just mess around in the game, or take down a helicopter. With that being said I very rarely will use the secondary weapons which for me makes them extremely ineffective, and a useless weapon within the game.

Summary

So there you have it, the best weapons to use in the game. The best ones to use in my opinion are the assault rifle, and submachine gun, and depending on your playing style and what you are trying to accomplish you will probably have similar taste. Those are the most popular weapons, and many have great success using those weapons.

Well, my play style is typically that of long range support (sniping, basically). But the HOW of the support has been quite variable over the CoDs...

In CoD4, in regular gametypes, I could provide pretty good long range fire with most of the assault rifles, snipers, and even the LMGs sometimes. In hardcore... completely different story. I could "snipe" with pretty much anything but a shotgun (yes, I could cross-map kill with the M9 in hardcore quite easily).

In W@W... well... I didn't play multiplayer in this nearly as much as I have the other ones. I felt the weapon balance was kinda crummy, but the same general rule from CoD4 applies.

(I haven't really played MW2 or Black Ops (1) in any real quantity to make any comments on those...)

MW3 on the other hand... that REALLY threw me off:

1) The Desert Eagle feels so WRONG compared to the CoD4 one.

2) Most of the assault rifles are a LOT harder to use at long range (with the typical exception of the M16A4, Type-95, and MK14), but single firing works pretty dang well...

3) I do not like how akimbo weapons feel.

4) Being able to have a sniper and an automatic weapon without using overkill is AWESOME. (Seriously, the MP9 should have been used as an SMG.)

Just a few of my thoughts.

On a side note, I think the bolt action sniper rifles do have a good use. Sometimes, a person starts sniping using the M21 (CoD4) or the .50 cal (MW3), and just sticks with spamming to make sure they get their kills. Using a bolt action sniper can really help you learn to place your shots and conserve ammo. I know I'm a LOT more likely to spray a lot more than I should if I'm using Bandolier (CoD4/W@W) or Scavenger Pro (MW3) than when I'm not, no matter what weapon I'm using.

I'm also going to have to disagree with you about the LMGs. I think a good 4-man team would have a guy using an LMG, a guy with an SMG, a guy with a fully auto assault rifle, and a guy fulfilling a marksman style role (sniper or burst/semi-auto assault rifle). LMG users can put down a lot of suppressing fire and also have a higher chance of hitting someone through a wall. Granted, not always a very useful thing, but it can be.

And finally (*shudder*)... I think I'll actually have to support the shotguns. In a close quarters map/situation (like most of Bootleg, Dome, Hardhat, and Downturn), shotguns can be more devastating than SMGs, IF (VERY big "if") used correctly. And trust me, I still haven't quite learned how to use them right most of the time...

Well, like I said, my thoughts on the matter.

Thank you for commenting wraith.. Yes the Deagle on COD4 was 100X better... They did make changes to assault rifles on MW3, but I think on Black Ops 2 it will switch back to traditional.. As far as snipers go, I am slightly out of my range because i RARELY use them, and if I am using them, I prefer using if necessary two or three quick shots to get the kill if I miss on the first...

Either way I am curious to see how things change on BO2, and thanks for commenting...

What are your thoughts on LMG's on the games. AND shotguns.. Personally I don't like neither. .

Wraith 4 years ago

I'll be honest, I don't like CoD shotguns. Never have. I mean, shooting across a street like the one on Crossfire in CoD4... I've only ever killed 1 person at that range becuase I managed to land 1 or 2 pellets in a guys head in hardcore TDM in CoD4. I personally find shotguns to be the most unreliable guns in any CoD I've played. Hitmarkers really close, 1-shot-kills at a slightly further distance, then hitmarkers again? WTF??? (I'm not the only one who has that problem either.)

LMGs I kind of enjoy, but I'll usually go with an assault rifle or SMG more often. They have high damage, and fairly good accuracy when firing 1 or 2 rounds at a time. My personal favorite in MW3 is the MK46, followed pretty closely by the M60 with rapid fire and kick or grip. Oddly enough, I hated the M60's iron sights in CoD4, but I kind of like them in MW3. (Makes NO sense whatsoever.) Usually I have a love/hate relationship with them, and I'll usually only use them on certain maps (typically Village) or as a dedicated anti-air class (stinger, blind eye pro, hardline, stalker, UAV, Counter UAV). Works really nicely when the other team calls in a strafe run or uses a UAV spam strategy, LMAO.

HAHA yes, the LMG's can be effective I just feel they are not as effective as they should have been considering the fact that they are such big weapons and so effective in real life. I feel they are just typically under powered.

AND I agree 100% with shotguns. They are COMPLETELY useless, and the game has them so awfully set up with hit detection I don't understand why some people enjoy them so much.

Wraith 4 years ago

Well, I think part of my dislike of CoD shotguns stems from the amount of Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) I've played. Considering the range on those shotguns (I have almost literally sniped smokers with the shotguns...), the CoD shotguns have almost NO range at all.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Yes the L4D shotguns were A LOT better than COD ones.. Maybe COD will implement a structure like that ;) haha.. But either way, I still probably will not like shotguns..

Wraith 4 years ago

Well, I think part of my dislike of CoD shotguns stems from the amount of Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) I've played. Considering the range on those shotguns (with 3 or 4 shots, you can kill things at 2 or 3 times the MAX range of a CoD shotgun...), the CoD shotguns have practically NO range at all. Also, I think they're hit detection also gets screwed up by pellet spread over area. I think if 2 pellets hit within a certain distance of each other, one of them might not register. Several people (me included) have gotten 2 or 3 hitmarkers at ranges less than 5 feet on stationary targets, but get 1 shot kills past 10 feet. Strangely enough, REMOVING steady aim from my shotgun class has IMMENSELY improved my kill ratio and 1 hit kill range with the KSG (haven't really tried it out with any of the other ones). And yes, I'm going (even more) crazy trying to figure out how the hell that works...

HAHA.. my buddy actually saved a video on MW3 of himself with a striker.. He was playing infected and walked up to someone.. POINT BLANK (probably 2 feet away or less) Aimed at his head.. and it didn't kill him, then you hear him say "What the F***" into the mic, and shoot him again, and gets a second round of hit markers, and finally on the third shot killed him.. then another guy runs over to him, and he one shot kills him from 5-6 feet away... The video is actually pretty funny, but still CLEARLY shows the flaws with a shotgun..

Wraith 4 years ago

Well, I haven't gotten around to actually figuring out a good way to record (shouldn't be too hard on the PC though), but I've had a few good clips showing absurd shotgun fails. KSG, kick and grip, along with steady aim. I shoot a guy with the reticule centered almost perfectly on center of mass, and I got a hitmarker from 5 feet away. Then there are those times where I get longshots with my first shot at an unhurt target.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 4 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

Yah recording is tough. People have been on my back since the first guides I wrote about doing Youtube videos, but to be honest, I don't like Youtube solely for the advertising factor. Either way, I am going to be doing more BO2 videos, so people don't think I am just blowing smoke.. and can actually use my guides.

Wraith 4 years ago

Oh, I forgot about another one. I shot at one guy, about 5 feet away or so, and killed the guy 5 feet behind HIM. Straight line. Hitmarker on target at 5 feet, kill on target at 10 feet. WHAT.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

Yup, the hit markers are off badly right now on BO2 sadly, but they should be fixed with a patch beginning this month.

Wraith 3 years ago

Oh, something else for the PC players to consider: FRAME RATE.

In CoD, after each frame, the game checks how long it has been since you fired the previous round. This means the graph of a gun's rate of fire vs the frames per second isn't a horizontal line. The following are the ACR's RoF vs FPS graphs:

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6919/acrxbox.png

http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/3821/acr80.png

(Do keep in mind that the second one is only 80 frames per second and higher.)

So a PC running MW3 at 90 frames per second gets a MUCH higher benefit from putting rapid fire on the MP7 than an console would.

I only found out this little piece of WTF info a few days ago, can't remember where the graphs (for all the weapons) my friend showed me are. I could only find a few graphs.

Sorry to post URLs on here again. I know you would prefer people didn't, but I couldn't figure out a way to describe the graphs that the site would let me post.

VERY interesting..;

Wraith 3 years ago

Alright, I know I've said horrible, NASTY things about shotguns... but I must make a few exceptions now. I LIKE THE BLACK OPS 2 SHOTGUNS.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

HAHA yes but in core they are a bit Over powered... lol.. not so much for close distance because I understand the point, but a shotgun becomes instant kill at 25-40 feet with long barrel and other attachments..

Wraith 3 years ago

...I must amend my previous statement (AGAIN...). I f***ing HATE the Executioner.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

Yes I am very annoyed lately with the executioner.. It is quite annoying, hard to use, and unstoppable on hardcore for those who have in fact learned to use it.. It is something that is very annoying to me.. I will say I am looking forward to the peacekeeper sub machine gun being added soon. It will be a fun toy to use, and I am interested to see whether i will have to get gold on that in order to have diamond sub machine guns, or IF I will keep my diamond submachine guns and have the option to level that up and get diamond on that as well.. Either way I will still get the mastery on that weapon in order to get the free xp..

Wraith 3 years ago

...Why the hell do I keep proving myself wrong? I've started using the Executioner a LOT with assault rifles. The real trick though, is learning when to pull it out and when to have the other gun out. (Took me a while to learn the best times and such...) But I actually kind of like it! Hipfire accuracy with it is about the same as ADS accuracy (as far as I can tell so far), so a laser sight is an EXCELLENT thing to use. If you can afford it, take fast mags or long barrel (your preference: reload speed or range). Now the tricky part. Crouched accuracy is better than standing, and prone is even BETTER. I got a 2 hit kill at a distance where I'd be lucky to get a 1-hit kill with the S12 (laser+long barrel) on a moving target. Dive and shoot. REALLY tough to get the hang of, but so funny. I think that was how I got the "Action Hero" challenge.

Wraith 3 years ago

Okay, just did some testing. ADS accuracy with laser sight is the same as without (standing, crouched, and prone are all about the same), of course. Laser sight makes a SIGNIFICANT hipfire accuracy boost, most noticeably when standing. The difference between crouched hipfire accuracy with and without the laser is still there, but not very big a difference. Now, here's the real kicker. Hipfire accuracy when prone is INSANE, and I can't spot any difference between using a laser and not using one. At the Executioners max range, you could probably manage to land at least half the pellets on target pretty easily, with practice. O.O

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

I'm not gonna lie I tried the executioner out.. once again.. and I still hate it haha.. I think it is way to hard to use, and I am just plain awful with it.. Who knows maybe I am doing it wrong, but I cannot stand that gun haha..

Wraith 3 years ago

Well, the best range to use it at is the range most people would rush and knife at or run away from to avoid being knifed. I also typically run it on an assault rifle class with fast hands and scavenger, so I can switch to it when I rush into a small room to shoot anyone (if they're there) and then switch back as I leave again.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

Yah, that's not a bad setup, and I may have to try with a submachine gun class, lightweight, and fast hands.. probably be EPIC.. or not.. lol

Wraith 3 years ago

Well, I typically prefer running an SMG with a combat knife... just because I can use an SMG fairly well at most ranges (well, from close range to somewhere a little past mid-range). That said, it would probably work well anyways. XD

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

I use SMG's with a combat knife as well... Not usually using the combat knife, but I don't have room for a sidearm after all my setting up..

Wraith 3 years ago

Well, a few weeks ago, I managed to get the 200 kill camo for the combat knife, and about a week ago, I managed to finish the other camos, aside from the 5 Bloodthirsty medals and the 5 Backfire medals.

. . . I just realized something. . . When I have the combat knife out, I still use the "melee attack" button (F for me) to use it, rather than the "shoot gun" button (Mouse 1 (left click)). . . huh.

Johnrr631992 profile image

Johnrr631992 3 years ago from Tampa, Florida Author

I have gotten used to using the trigger button since Nuketown in the beginning of Black Ops 2, when I found the combat knife was extremely effective. I used that more than I was using my guns, and got used to using the trigger button.
