Mass Effect 3 Characters - Squad Members, Allies and Enemies

Main Mass Effect 3 Characters

There are many characters in the game Mass Effect 3. As with other Mass Effect games you will be interacting a lot with the characters. To learn more about the characters in Mass Effect 3 please continue reading.

The characters are split up into three categories; squad members, allies and enemies.

Since the has only been available to play for a short time, I will continue to add Mass Effect 3 characters to this list as I encounter them.

Mass Effect 3 Squad Members

Ashley Williams

D.O.B: April 14th, 2158 (28 years old)

Ashley Williams returns in Mass Effect 3. Before starting gameplay in Mass Effect 3, you will be asked to choose who survived Virmire; Ashley Williams or Kaidan Alenko. The events on Virmire occurred in the original Mass Effect game. If you choose Ashley Williams, as the survivor, she will appear fairly early in the game.

Ashley Williams comes from a long line of Alliance soldiers. Ashley followed her families tradition and joined the Alliance navy right out of high school. Ashley breezed through her military training, picking up several commendations along the way. She is a natural born marine and was praised by her Training Officers for her aggressive instincts and leadership abilities.

As a marine, Ashley is proficient in the use of Assault rifles. Her powers would put her in the Soldier class.

Ashley plays a critical role in Mass Effect 3 and she can be a romantic interest for a male Shepard.

Powers: Disruptor Ammo, Concussive Shot, Inferno Grenade, Marksman, Arms Master.

D.O.B: 2185 (1 year old)

EDI (Enhanced Defense Intelligence) is the AI developed, by Cerberus, for Shepard's ship the Normandy SR-2. EDI’s role is to maintain the Normandy ship’s systems and defend it against attack. EDI is the voice and the brains of the ship.

EDI is often referred to as a ‘she’ because of the female voice. In Mass Effect 2, EDI was non-corporeal. However, EDI did consider the ship to be her body. Throughout Mass Effect 2, EDI’s personality developed and she went from being a boring piece of software to a life form with emotions, humor, and personality.

It is no secret that in Mass Effect 3 EDI now has a physical body. You can see her pictured to the right. I won’t explain how this happens but, after it does, EDI can now be used as a squad member. She is a very useful squad member and can be a lot of fun.

EDI is proficient with Tech powers and mainly uses a pistol.

Unfortunately, EDI is not a romantic interest for Shepard but you can encourage her to pursue a romantic relationship with Joker.

Powers: Incinerate, Overload, Defence Matrix, Decoy, Unshackled AI.

Liara T'Soni
Liara T'Soni

Liara T'Soni

D.O.B: 2077 (109 years old)

The kick-ass, gun toting, Asari doctor is back in Mass Effect 3. Dr. Liara T'Soni is a squad member in Mass Effect 3 and she plays a key role in the games story.

Liara T’Soni is an Asari doctor who specialises in the research of the extinct Prothean race. The Asari are a long lived race and, even though Liara is 109 years old, she is considered a teenager by her peoples’ standards.

Liara first meets Shepard in Mass Effect 1. She is drawn to Shepard because of his link to the Protheans. Over the course of the Mass Effect games, Liara and Shepard become fast friends.

Liara is a powerful biotic and mainly carries pistols and sub-machine guns.

In Mass Effect 3, you can find Liara in the XO office on the Normandy. Liara’s life takes an interesting turn after the events of Mass Effect 2. Try to visit her in the XO office as soon as she is on board the ship. Another benefit of visiting Liara is that she is a romantic interest in Mass Effect 3, for both a male or female Shepard.

Powers: Warp Ammo, Singularity, Warp, Stasis, Pure Biotic.

Tali'Zorah vas Normandy

D.O.B: 2161 (25 years old)

Tali'Zorah is back in Mass Effect 3. This makes her one of only two characters who have acted as squad members on all three Mass Effect games.

Tali'Zorah is a Quarian and the daughter of Rael'Zorah, a very important figure in Quarian society. Tali'Zorah, like all Quarians, is always seen wearing an environmental suit covering her face, protecting her from disease and infection. Quarians wear environmental suits due to their weak immune systems.

Tali'Zorah first meets Shepard in Mass Effect 1 when he saves her from a group of potential assassins.

Like all Quarians, Tali'Zorah is good at using Tech powers. She is most like the Engineer class in Mass Effect and specialises in the use of both pistols and shotguns.

Tali'Zorah is a romance interest in Mass Effect 3 but only if the romance was started in Mass Effect 2.

James Vega
James Vega

James Vega

D.O.B: Unknown

James Vega is a new character in Mass Effect 3. James Vega is an Alliance soldier. He is full of testosterone and loves a good fight. He makes a great squad mate and can always be trusted to inflict a lot of damage and blow things up.

James can be found in the Shuttle Bay of the Normandy. As a marine, James is proficient in the use of assault rifles and also uses a shotgun and a pistol. He can also carry Frag Grenades.

James Vega is a new character and if I tell you his story I will spoil it for you. If you want to learn James’ story speak to him on the Normandy.

Powers: Incendiary Ammo, Fortification, Frag Grenade, Carnage, Alliance Officer.

Garrus Vakarian
Garrus Vakarian

Garrus Vakarian

D.O.B: Unknown be in his late 20’s

Garrus is back again making him the other character who has acted as a squad mate in all three Mass Effect games.

Like most Turians, Garrus started his military career at the age of 15. Other than that not much is know about Garrus until his adult years, when he joined C-Sec (the Citadel police force). Garrus quickly became one of the best C-Sec Investigators.

Garrus is proficient in the use of all weapons but is mostly seen using a sniper or assault rifle. Garrus also makes use of tech powers.

Garrus is a romantic interest if you’re playing as a female Shepard. However, like Tali'Zorah the romance can only be carried over from a Mass Effect 2 save.

Powers: Armor-Piercing Ammo, Concussive Shot, Proximity Mine, Overload, Turian Rebel.

Kaidan Alenko
Kaidan Alenko

Kaidan Alenko

D.O.B: 2151 (35 years old)

Kaidan Alenko appears in Mass Effect 3. Before starting gameplay you will be asked to choose who survived Virmire; Ashley Williams or Kaidan Alenko. If you choose Kaidan Alenko he will appear as a squad member in the game. If you choose Kaidan as the survivor it will make no significant difference to the game. Kaidan and Ashley play the same role in Mass Effect 3.

Kaidan Alenko is a sentinel with a few useful biotic abilities.

Both male and female Shepard’s can start a romantic relationship with Kaidan Alenko.

D.O.B: approx 47,750 BCE (approx 50,000 years old.)

Javik is the last surviving member of the Prothean race. Javik has been in stasis for over 50,000 years, he is removed from stasis by Shepard in Mass Effect 3. Javik joins Shepard in order to get revenge on the Reapers. His only goal in life is to kill as many Reapers as possible making him an ideal squad mate.

Since Javik is a new character, and he plays a pivotal role in the Mass Effect 3 storyline, I will not reveal anymore information about him.

Powers: Dark Channel, Lift Grenade, Pull, Slam, Vengeful Ancient.

Mass Effect 3 Allies

Jeff "Joker" Moreau

D.O.B: 2155 (31 years old)

Joker, one of the best pilots in the universe, is back in Mass Effect 3. Joker has been a staple in all the Mass Effect games and being aboard the Normandy just wouldn’t be the same without Joker.

Joker suffers from a disease which causes his bones to be brittle. This means he will almost always be seen sitting down. Joker is an extremely good pilot and he isn’t shy to admit it. He will often make jokes about how great a pilot he is.

In Mass Effect 3, Shepard can aid in the romance between EDI and Joker. To do this you need to run into EDI when you’re in the Citadel commons and talk to her.

Samantha Traynor
Samantha Traynor

Samantha Traynor

D.O.B: Unknown

Samantha Traynor is a new addition to the Mass Effect series. She will be taking over the position of Kelly Chambers, as ship Yeoman. Not much is known about Samantha as she is a new character.

Try to speak to Samantha after every mission and you will learn a lot about her.

Samantha is a potential romance interest but only for a female Shepard.

Diana Allers

D.O.B: Unknown

Diana Allers is another new addition to Mass Effect 3. She plays a reporter who Shepard can choose to allow on the Normandy. If allowed on the Normandy Diana will interview Shepard a few times throughout the course of the game.

It is beneficial to let Diana Allers on the ship and she will aid Shepard in the battle against the Reapers. As a reporter, she is in a unique position to boost the morale of her viewers by reporting Shepard's progress.

Diana is a potential romance interest for both a male or female Shepard.

David Anderson

D.O.B: 2137 (49 years old)

David Anderson is in Mass Effect 3 and he is leading the human resistance on Earth. He will keep in close contact with Shepard throughout Mass Effect 3.

Admiral Steven Hackett

D.O.B: Unknown

Everybodys favorite Admiral, Steven Hackett, is back in Mass Effect 3. Shepard will debrief with Steven Hackett after almost every mission in the comms center.

The Illusive Man
The Illusive Man

Mass Effect 3 Enemies

The Illusive Man

D.O.B: Unknown

Not much is know about The Illusive Man except that he is the leader of Cerberus. He is very hard to pin down. Besides the Reapers, The Illusive Man man is Shepard's main adversary in Mass Effect 3.

Cerberus is a paramilitary organisation with the single minded goal of advancing the human role in the Galactic community. Cerberus will resort to anything to achieve its goal and they are known for their brutality and ruthlessness.

These are the major Mass Effect 3 characters and by now you have an indication of who they are and their roles within the game.

Tali is an Engineer, not a Sentinel. She isn't biotic and she has a drone and Sabotage, like an Engineer.

Thanks for spotting my error. I meant to write engineer, not sentinel.

Tali FTW!!!!!!!

Was anyone else a little irritated at the party choices in this game. I played ME1 and almost every aquad member in the game is from the first I was hoping for some awesome new squad members instead I feel like I'm playing the first game with a makeover.

Troy you can't really complain to badly. So your squad mate choice isn't as large as the second game. Gameplay is still solid and story is still driving and intense. Sometimes people just complain to hear their own voice it seems.
