Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Walkthrough, Part Five: Route 116

Alriiiiight! One gym badge down! That only leaves... seven. To go. Well, nobody said this Hoenn round trip would be easy, and it'd be danged disappointing if your journey was over so quickly anyway. Next up we take a quick jaunt down what is currently a dead-end Route, perchance to save an old man's precious pet from almost certain abduction.

Seriously, though. Briney is creepy.

Route 116

(Late in the game, once you have the National Dex, you can return to this Route to find new pokemon via DexNav sneaking. A list of available pokemon can be found here.)

- After beating the Rustboro Pokemon Gym, head back to the street to watch a cut scene. You’ll see an enemy grunt rush by. Follow after him, then head north to Route 115. Most of this small Route is blocked off, but if you check the beach you can find a Zinc. Grab it and run back to town. You’ll visit the rest of this Route later in the game.

- To the east of Rustboro is Route 116. There are a ton of trainers on this split route, and, as that descriptor implies, you can skip a lot of them simply by sticking to the north or south sides. If you take the initial southern path you’ll find a Repel, and if you take the northern path you’ll find a Potion.

Bug Catcher Jose

  • Wurmple, level 7
  • Nincada, level 7
  • Silcoon, level 7

Reward: $112

Easy peasy. Flying-types dominate.

Youngster Joey

  • Zigzagoon, level 7
  • Machop, level 9

Reward: $144

Oooo, a fighting-type. You haven’t seen many of these yet, but you’ll see lots very soon. Machop is pretty neutral to your starter, can thrash any normal-types you may have caught, and will be thrashed by flying-types.

- The path narrows ahead. The trainer here is a bit easier to avoid, if you’re so inclined.

Lass Janice

  • Marill, level 10

Reward: $160

Oooo, a water-type. Nothing especially difficult, but notable enough. Grass-types will win easily.

- Up ahead there’s a bend in the path guarded by a trainer. You can avoid him if you’re slippery and move when he does, but the timing is difficult.

Hiker Clark

  • Geodude, level 8
  • Geodude, level 10

Reward: $320

You dealt with lots of these in the previous gym, and they were aaaaaall stronger.

- North of this trainer is a house, and to the right of the house is a small cave. You can find a Cutable bush to the left of the house; we’ll Cut through it after dealing with the tiny cave. Check beside the cave for an X Sp. Atk, then pop inside. (You’ll also find two weird indents on the cliffs; we’ll deal with those a fair bit later in the game. You need a particular move to make them useful.)

Rusturf Tunnel

- This tiny area is populated entirely by Whismur, and you’ll be searching in vain if you hunt for anything else right now. (Later, if you really want, you can come back with Rock Smash and catch Geodudes. Meh.) Head north to grab a Poke Ball, check the big rock to the left of the horizontal tunnel for a hidden Dire Hit, then pursue the Grunt you saw in Rustboro to the east to get into a trainer battle.

Team Aqua / Magma Grunt

  • Poochyena, level 13

Reward: $520

As if you don’t know how to deal with these by now. Seriously. (For the record, if you picked up the Makuhita in Rustboro City, it can demolish dark-types like Poochyena. Just saying.)

- Beating the Grunt will get you Devon Goods and free a distressed Wingull, earning you the gratitude of a strange, strange old man. You can’t do anything else in Rusturf Tunnel right now, so pop back out to the previous Route.

Route 116

- Assuming you have a pokemon with Cut, use the HM move on the bush beside the house. This will take you to a short path populated by trainers. You can use Cut to bypass them, but, why, really? At the end of the path you'll find six Chesto Berries and an Ether, and if you check the ground behind a seemingly-useless tree down and to the right of the final ledge you'll find a hidden Super Potion.

Schoolkid Jerry

  • Ralts, level 10

Reward: $200

Ralts’ evolutions will give you plenty of trouble later in the game. Right now, though, this pint-size is no powerhouse.

Schoolgirl Karen

  • Shroomish, level 8
  • Whismur, level 8

Reward: $160

Pushovers, the both of 'em.

May meets with the president of Devon Corp. in Rustboro City.
May meets with the president of Devon Corp. in Rustboro City.

Rustboro City

- On your way back into the city the Devon worker you passed earlier will give you a Great Ball. He’ll then guide you to Devon Corporation’s HQ and introduce you to the president, who will give you a Letter to give to someone named Steven. He’ll also upgrade your DexNav to receive BuzzCalls, which will keep you informed of goings-on in the world of Hoenn - and amongst your online friends.

- Devon Corp. is otherwise not that useful, save for one small thing that’s easy to miss. Speak to the far-left researcher on the second floor and he’ll tell you that he’s created a device for resurrecting pokemon from Fossils. You’ll get Fossils much later in the game, and you can bring them to this dude to receive pokemon that can’t be found normally in the wild. Handy.

- Remember that seaside shack on Route 104? Head back there now. Its owner, the odd old man with the Wingull he likes a little too much, will offer to give you a ride on his boat. Accept the offer and he’ll whisk you off to a new town - and a new gym challenge.

Great walkthrough Matt. I always find yours the best, since you explain everything so well and tell us where hidden items are located. I even used your X and Y walkthrough last year. :) Good stuff!

Thanks! I try. I don't find these two as fun as X and Y, but they're decent enough.
