The journey continues! You’ve caught your first glimpse of a Pokémon Gym in Petalburg City, but you’re not near strong enough to take on your papa. You’ll have to do some serious training to reach his level, and the first step on that regime is Rustboro City, to the north. Getting there is no easy feat, however, as you must trek across both halves of Route 104… and through the shady Petalburg Woods.

Route 104

(Late in the game, once you have the National Dex, you can return to this Route to find new pokemon via DexNav sneaking. A list of available pokemon can be found here.)

- Route 104 splits ever so slightly. If you pop down onto the beach (south of the entrance) you’ll find a roaming trainer. Check the sand along his westward pacing route, a few steps before he turns south, to find a hidden Heart Scale. Check the bottom-left corner of the beach, right near the water's edge, and you can also find a hidden Antidote, and check a few paces south of the dock in the north to find a hidden Potion. If you stay on the green bits you’ll have to pass through grass to head north.

Youngster Billy

  • Seedot, level 4
  • Taillow, level 6

Reward: $96

Still the physical stuff. Sigh. Well, it’s the beginning of the game, so you can’t expect too much. Seedot can be rather annoying if you don’t have a fire-type move to fry the thing, as it uses Bide to store up energy and can deal it back rather harshly. Don’t use a pokemon that can’t kill it in two moves or less.

- The house / dock nearby is populated by an old man who is waaaaay too Next to Briney's house is a little boy who wants a Potion for his pokemon. Give him one to be a good sport.

Continue north to find a dirt patch with two Pecha Berries and two Oran Berries, then head west to find a trainer battle and the entrance to a small forested area.

Rich Boy Winston

  • Zigzagoon, level 7

Reward: $960

A slightly tougher Zigzagoon, but nobody worth worrying over. Of greater note than the battle is the lovely amount of cash you earn for beating Winston’s Zigzagoon. Ladies and Rich Boys always give away a lot of reward cash when they're defeated

Petalburg Woods

- A few new pokemon! The path splits as soon as you enter Petalburg Woods. Head east from the entrance and you’ll find a patch of grass with a bare spot in the middle; hunt around the top of the spot for a hidden Potion, tapping the A button as you wander. Head south and out of the woods from here, back to the previous Route, to find a Poke Ball.

- Back to Petalburg Woods. Head west to find your first trainer. North of him you’ll find a Paralyze Heal. This may come in handy if the Shroomish in the forest manage to paralyze one of your pokemon.

Bug Catcher Lyle

  • Wurmple, level 5
  • Wurmple, level 5
  • Wurmple, level 5

Reward: $80

Weakest of the weak, and ideal levelling fodder if you just put a Taillow on your team. Thwomp ‘im.

- Wander north, deeper into the woods. Here you’ll receive a formal introduction to the bad guys of the game. Who you face depends on your version of the game; expect to face these dudes a lot.

Team Aqua Grunt / Team Magma Grunt

  • Poochyena, level 9

Reward: $360, Exp. Share

A slight cut above, but nothing serious. You’ve fought these things (or things like ‘em) before. The important thing here is that you'll get the Exp. Share after the battle, which shares out experience to everyone pokemon in your party. It's a fantastic means of levelling up weak pokemon. If you want to turn it off, look at the Key Items section of your Bag.

- Head northwest after the cut scene. (Your pokemon are healed, too. Nice.) There’s one last trainer to wipe out before you leave Petalburg Woods. Check the bare spot to the left of the trainer for a hidden Balm Mushroom (which regenerates on subsequent trips), up north for an Ether, and east of the exit for… well, nothing, really. There are bushes in the way. We'll come back here shortly to sort 'em out.

Bug Catcher James

  • Nincada, level 8

Reward: $128

High normal defence, low special. Water will help you get through this easily. Otherwise, chip this thing down with your best attacks.

Route 104

- Weeeee’re back. To the left of Petalburg Woods’ exit you’ll see a guy wandering near Berries; speak to him for TM49, Echoed Voice. Then grab the Berries for two Pecha Berries, two Cheri Berries, and two Oran Berries. Beside the dirt patch you’ll find a store whose occupants will teach you all about Berries, and one of them will give you a Wailmer Pail. The little girl in here will give you a Rawst Berry.

- Check behind the gardening store. You’ll find an X-Attack in the grass, and if you check the bare spots near the item you’ll find a Poke Ball and a Super Potion.

- Return to the main road and head east. There are two trainers along the path to the boardwalk in the far east, and if you wander up the boardwalk you’ll find some more trainers waiting.

Lady Cindy

  • Zigzagoon, level 10

Reward: $1,200

Look at that, a Lady! Not much tougher than Winston from earlier, and more profitable to boot. Nice.

Lass Haley

  • Lotad, level 6
  • Shroomish, level 6

Reward: $96

Lotad is mildly troublesome since it resists several elements, so stick to normal-type physical attacks (or something that can use flying-type moves, such as Torchic’s Peck attack.)

Twins Gina & Mia

  • Lotad, level 9
  • Seedot, level 9

Reward: $172

A double battle! How novel. Not difficult, whether you fight them with one pokemon or two (though you need at least two to trigger the battle).

Fisherman Ivan

  • Magikarp, level 5
  • Magikarp, level 7
  • Magikarp, level 7

Reward: $224

Magikarp. Aaaaaalways weak.

- Just east of Ivan you’ll find a dirt patch with eight Oran Berries and four Cheri Berries, and if you speak to the old woman beside the water she’ll give you a Chesto Berry. Then wander northwest to find your next major destination: Rustboro City.

Return Trip

- Cut through the trees near the exit of Petalburg Woods and you’ll find a girl who will give you a Miracle Seed. This is a great item for grass-type pokemon. A short ways east of her is a Great Ball, and if you look at the bare patch in the grass back the way you came, to her left, you’ll find a hidden Tiny Mushroom. Jump down a cliff on the east side of this path to find an X Attack, and if you check the left edge of the grassy patch to the southeast of the X Attack you’ll find another Tiny Mushroom.

- In the top-right corner of Petalburg Woods you’ll find a mossy stone that you can observe, unlike other stones. This is used to evolve some pokemon when they’re levelled nearby, notably Eevee into Leafeon.

- If you Cut down the tree near the beginning of the watery boardwalk on Route 104 you can find a Revive on the other side.

- Once you have Surf you can search the upper half of Route 104, which is covered in water. On the far right side you'll find a PP Up.
