Your Hoenn Pokémon journey has begun! With a single starter pokémon on your belt you've begun the long, painful process of mastering the entire Hoenn region. It's going to take quite a while to reach the end of the road, and you'll have a lot of Routes to traverse before you reach Victory Road at the other end of the world. Let's start with Route 102 to Petalburg City, shall we?

Youngster Calvin, the first avoidable pokemon trainer you'll have to face. He's such a scamp.

Pokemon Tails

Before you even reach Route 102, your rival will stop you on Route 101 and teach you about catching pokemon by their tails. Occasionally while you’re wandering around near tall grass you’ll see pokemon tails sticking out of the grass and making noise. If you move very slowly towards the tail using the circle pad on your 2/3DS, you can get into a battle with the pokemon and, hopefully, catch it. Pokemon caught this way often have rare moves; for example, the Poochyena I caught during the tutorial knew Thunder Fang, a useful electric-type physical attack. These pokemon are stronger than the normal pokemon you’ll catch on the Route, as well, so it’s worth going after dem tails.

One last tip: sneaking through grass appears to make pokemon battles less common. This doesn’t seem like a big deal now, but later in the game you may find long Routes taxing on your resources. Try sneaking to get out of useless battles with weak wild pokemon.

Route 102

- Route 102 is the first place where you’ll start running into other pokemon trainers. Pokemon trainers will rush up to you if you come within their line of sight, forcing you to engage in a pokemon battle. You can’t flee from pokemon battles, and you’ll need to defeat all of the pokemon on the other team to end the battle. On the plus side, you’ll earn money for beating other trainers - and each pokemon defeated is worth more experience than normal.

- Head west. Your first non-rival trainer battle is waiting nearby.

Youngster Calvin

  • Zigzagoon, level 5

Reward: $64

Basic physical attacker. Meh. Smack him down.

- Further west the path will split, and if you take the upper path you’ll have to face a trainer. Take the lower path if you’d rather avoid the fight.

Bug Catcher Rick

  • Wurmple, level 4

Reward: $64

Moderately tougher than Wurmples you’d face in the wild. Nothing that should challenge your pokemon overly much.

- The path skews northward further to the left. There’s another trainer waiting beyond a larger patch of grass.

Youngster Allen

  • Poochyena, level 4
  • Taillow, level 2

Reward: $32

More straightforward physical stuff. Little to say, really, though Taillow can be ever so moderately dangerous if you lead with a grass-type. (Though even your starter is probably strong enough without levelling to take down the bird in one hit.)

- Up and to the right of this trainer is a small patch of dirt with two odd-looking trees. Check them both for two Pecha Berries and two Oran Berries. Berries are held items which you can grow in these dirt patches by replanting a Berry. You’ll need a watering can (coming soon) and time to grow new Berries, so keep the ones you just got for now. They'll fester uselessly in the ground without water.

- There’s another trainer to the west; if you want you can avoid her by skimming through the patch of grass behind her. Look south of the trainer to find a Potion.

Lass Tiana

  • Zigzagoon, level 5

Reward: $80

Yep… I'll give her credit for probably being the toughest trainer on the Route, but that's not saying a whole lot.

Your father. No, trust me, that's what he looks like these days.

- Just before you reach the next location in the game you'll be stopped by your rival for a quick look at the scenery. How lovely.

Petalburg City

- Welcome to the first gym city in the game… though you can’t challenge this gym just yet. For starters, poke into the Poke Mart for items, and check the Pokemon Center to heal your team. If you've been catching lots of pokemon early you'll probably want to grab a few Poke Balls

- Even though you can’t fight the gym leader (daddy!), you need to step into the gym. Here you’ll meet Wally, another rival of sorts who's just about the most adorable little boy on the planet. (Don't underestimate him, though, as Wally will smack you down hard later in the game.) Follow him to officially learn how to catch pokemon.

- After Wally's done catching his Ralts he'll upgrade your Pokedex another step. Now you can access the PlayNav option, which opens a few new paths of play:

  • Playing online with others via the PPS. Online combat! Not recommended this early in the game.
  • Playing with your pokemon via Pokemon-Amie. Pokemon-Amie allows you to build up your pokemon's affection levels, which can be useful for boosting certain moves or even evolving your pokemon. More on this in another article.
  • Training your pokemon via Super Training. Super Training allows you to build up the EVs of your pokemon, resulting in more productive level-ups. More on this important feature in another article.

- That done, you’ll be finished in Petalburg City. (The houses here aren’t much use. Yes, even Wally's house.) Head west onto a new Route, Route 104.

Return Trip

- In the southwest of Petalburg is a pond. Cross it with Surf and you'll find an Ether sitting on the water's edge in the south. There's also a seemingly-empty space to the right of the Ether, and if you investigate it you'll find a hidden Rare Candy.

- There's another pond in the northeast of Petalburg. Surf across it to find a Max Revive.

Cool. Thanks. Once I get Fly I'll hop back there and have a look.
