Pottermore Clues: Beta Sign Up Closed!
Pottermore
Harry Potter is never over!
If you've been down and in a depressed-like state for the past couple weeks, ever since the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere in fact, then it's probably because you are upset about the end of the Harry Potter generation.
Well, I'm here to tell you that IT'S NOT OVER!
For the past 7 days, millions of Harry Potter fans around the world have been watching one site: pottermore.com.
Pottermore will be an interactive website where you will be able to go through the Harry Potter books chapter by chapter. You will be sorted and have to purchase materials for your first year at Hogwarts. If you are sorted into a house other than Gryffindor, you will learn more about the history of that house as well as who the prefects and what other current events are in your common room!
Early registration is now closed, but here is how it worked.
We asked the fans to not be selfish.
There were already enough people trying to get into Pottermore. We asked that they please not make multiple accounts. This is only Beta Testing! This means that they were only allowing us to get in early so that we can go through everything and report problems. They're doing this so that the site will be perfect for us in October.
Rules for finding the quill.
Suffice it to say, I'm super excited. The site does not open until October, but this week there were 7 chances to register early. Each day, the Magical Quill had a clue. on July 31st, the clue pertained to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (American title). On August 2nd, the clue pertained to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and so on.
The registration URL.
You just had to read the clue, figure out that answer, and then go to the appropriate page to find and click on the Magic Quill. Just like the above example explains, if the clue eas 70, then you needed to add it to the URL quill.pottermore.com/70.
Each day, I added the latest clue and answer to this hub.
Read the following to see our (the fans') journey. =)
Day 1, Clue 1, Book 1
“How many breeds of owls were offered on the Eeylops Owl Emporium sign, then multiply this number by 49.”
Answer: Eeylops Owl Emporium sells tawny, screech, barn, brown, and snowy owls. This is 5 breeds. 5 multiplied by 49 is 245.
Using the clue.
Because the answer to the clue is 245, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/245 in order to register early for the website.
Day 2, Clue 2, Book 2
"What is the number of the chapter in which Professor McGonagall cancels the Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff? Multiply this number by 42."
Answer: Chapter 14 is when this happens in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. 14 multiplied by 42 is 588.
Using the clue.
Because the answer to the clue is 588, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/588 in order to register early for the website.
Day 3, Clue 3, Book 3
“In the Gryffindor versus Slytherin Quidditch match, in Harry's third year, how many points is Gryffindor leading by before Harry catches the Golden Snitch? Multiply this number by 35.”
Answer: Griffindor was leading by 60 points before Harry caught the snitch. 60 multiplied by 35 is 2100.
Using the clue.
- Pottermore Harry Potter's digital adventure | Children's books | guardian.co.uk
Because the answer to the clue is 2100, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/2100, which redirects you to this article. You had to levitate the quill in the ad to the right by wiggling your mouse steadily. (This is the day I got in!)
Day 4, Clue 4, Book 4
"How many students take part in the Triwizard Tournament during Harry's fourth year? Multiply this number by 28."
Answer: 4 Students are selected for the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. 4 multiplied by 28 is 112.
Using the clue.
Because the answer to the clue is 112, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/112. The site had technical difficulties with the challenge, so it was easy. That url redirected you to the page that says, "Congratulations, you've found the quill!" and there was a button to register.
Day 5, Clue 5, Book 5
"What is the house number of the Headquarters for The Order of the Phoenix in Grimmauld Place? Multiply this number by 21."
Answer: Grimmauld Place's house number is 12. 12 multiplied by 21 is 252.
Using the clue.
Because the answer to the clue is 252, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/112. The URL redirected you to Scholastic's website. The quill was once more in an ad near the top of the page. There were many quills, and you had to click on the one with a glow around it. This would have taken you to the page to register.
Day 6, Clue 6, Book 6
"How many chapters are there in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? Multiply this number by 14.
Answer: There are 30 chapters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. 30 multiply 14 is 420.
Using the clue.
Because the answer to the clue is 420, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/420. It would have redirected you to Universal Studio's Wizarding World of Harry Potter page. You had to wait through the intro and then click on the glowing quill, which would have taken you to the page to register.
Day 7, Clue 7, Book 7
"How many Deathly Hallows are there? Multiply this number by 7."
Answer: There are 3 Deathly Hallows: the ring, the wand, and the cloak. 3 multiplied by 7 is 21.
Using the clue.
Because the answer to the clue is 21, you would have put quill.pottermore.com/21. It would have directed you to the Parseltongue Translator page on Warner Brother's website. If you skipped through the intro, you would see quills in yet another ad at the top of the page. You had to click on the correct one, which took you to the page to register.
Did you make the cut?
Were you able to find the clue in time and register? I hope so! Congratulations to everyone who made in. To those who didn't: there's still October! As two of my favorite characters would say, "CONSTANT VIGILANCE" (Alastar "Mad Eye" Moody), and of course, "Don't let the muggles get you down!" (Ronald Weasley).

Whether you were able to or not, tell us below! =)
UPDATE DECEMBER 15, 2011.
Because of the site taking much more time and planning than they originally thought (they use excuse of wanting to make it PERFECT for us XD) and also because of a close call on yet another person trying to spill the secrets before they're actually announced, they've decided to extend the Pottermore Beta period.
Here's a link to the Pottermore Insider article about it.
- Pottermore Insider: Making Pottermore even better
Since we launched Pottermore, our one million Beta users have given us lots of amazing feedback, and we’ve been collecting their thoughts and comments so that we can make Pottermore the best experience it can be before it opens to everyone...
Pottermore Insider is keeping everyone entertained currently with articles going chapter by chapter of the first book. They're showing pictures fans have drawn to depict the different characters of the book. =)
I'm as eager as you to see what Pottermore will release once they've finally come out of the Beta phase! I hope it's soon. Keep up with Pottermore Insider and let me know if you catch Some of the latest news before me!
