A hookah or a shisha is a single or multi stemmed glass based water pipe for smoking.The hookah originated in india and then was developed further by people of Turkey and Iran. Today we have shisha lounges and parlors where one could go and relax and enjoy shisha/hookah.

It is used for smoking herbal fruits and tobacco and considered healthier than smoking.

When smoking tobacco became very popular in India at the period of Mughal emperor Akbar, a physician from Baghdad, In the court of Mugal was concerned of the ill effects of tobacco and developed hookah, in which air passes through water and is purified.

The hookah was originated in india, became very popular among the noble men and was a province of the wealthy and affluent.The hookah became a matter of prestige !

The hookah has since became less popular.But now it has come back with a new punch to it and catching the attention of every one.Cafe's, restaurants are offering hookahs/shishas as a new trend and these parlours are mushrooming in most of the popular places.

Smoking mollasses in hookah with or without tobacco is very popular now.You can choose to smoke shisha with only fruit mollasses and avoid tobacco completely.

Koyilandy is a small fishing town in the west coast of India once made and exported these shishas.

A hookah is made up of five to six components, four of which are essential for its function.

>The bowl or head of the hookah-:its the container made out of clay or marble to hold the coal, tobacco during smoking.

>Windscreen-:It's a perforated cover which rests on the bowl area.

>Hose-:Its the slender pipe from which the smoke is to be drawn for smoking.

>Body-:Its a hollow tube, bowl is to be attatched on top.At the bottom there is a downstem that is submerged in water.The point where the body meets the water jar is sealed with a gasket.

>Water jar-:Smoke passes through the body and out the downstem where it bubbles through water. The body of the hookah sits on top of the water jar.

>Plate-: Its an ashtray which is fixed just below the bowl.

Some home made shisha recipes to make and enjoy your own shisha. You can exclude tobacco from the recipe as shisha can be smoked with or without tobacco.

The things you need-:

>Edible glycerin

>Tobacco

>Honey or mollasses

>Fruits or flavors of your choice

Either you can cook fruits and add honey, mollasses and tobacco or marinate finely chopped fruits and tobacco in honey or mollasses and glycerin.

Mango shisha-:(marinated) Finely cut mango pieces and mix with tobacco, mix the honey and then the glycerin evenly.cover and marinate for 6 to 7 hours, you can fill the base of your hookah with mango juice and ice.

Banana shisha-:(cooked) It can also be prepared by cooking bananas, adding tobacco till it reaches a good consistency and add mollasses or honey.

The ratio of the ingredients is -20% flavor or fruits, 30% tobacco, 25% glycerin, 25% honey.

You can use kiwi, apple, lemon, chocolate, blueberry, strawberry, peach, pineapple, orange, banana, cherries, watermelon, vanilla etc !

likewise you can fill the base of the hookah with cola, mango or any other fruit juice!

You have explained it all so nicely! I didn't know about the mango flavor. Must show this to one of my sons, who has recently added a hookah bar to his tattoo center and cafe.

i go to hookah bars all the time where i live but am wanting to just make my own lots of great info thanks. do i need to dry out the fruit first ro add it fresh. how finall chopped do the tobbacco and fruit need to be.

Well we need to add freshly chopped fruit,very finely chopped,the size of a wheat grain perhaps!Don't worry about the shape of the pieces.. triangles, irregular, squares anything is good as long as it is finely chopped.You want to experiment with tobacco from a cigarette and see how that turns out..happy shisha smoking:)

Wonderful hub,

My mouth is watering at the thought of the Shisha. Haven't had one for ages and those devouring images of the strawberries is tempting.

Nothing beats just relaxing with your friends, watching the sunset and smoking the shisha in somewhere like Dubai or in that kind of enviroment.

what should be the correct ratio of glycerin, fruits and honey if we exclude tobacco???

Does it affect the density of smoke?

Thanks for stopping by Indian rokerzzz.1 tspn honey, 1 tspn glycerin 3 tspn fruit. This is just a rough idea but I think it should give you a nice, smooth paste. The idea is to make a soft paste out of the combination.Sorry for the late reply though :(

Hello iam wondering this for a really really long time do you need glycerine for the smoke or can you make shisha flavour from just scrap like , honey , zest, and juices of the lets say orange and some syrup would that work or is the glycerine the main element for it too smoke

Thanks for stopping by. Well glycerine is what gives thickness and a sweet flavor to the smoke. Honey acts as a burn retardant keeping your shisha fresh but it also adds tar being vaporised by coals. You could add a little bit of honey and glycerine and stir a dying shisha back to life though. Glycerine (food grade) is the main ingredient that gives consistency, big smoke and pulls moisture from the air. Too much honey would caramelise and mess up the flavor and too much glycerine would give crazy amounts of smoke. You could try it with honey or molasses but that would give you a very strong smoke and cake in the bowl. If you are not used to that strength of unprocessed smoke it might not be a pleasant experience for you ! I wish you a happy experiment.
