The Night the Playstation 3 Died

RIP PS3

My husband has been a video game addict for as long as I can remember. As part of his collection he acquired the Playstation 3 immediately upon it's release. Since 2005, he has collected several different games and we have also used it as a Blu Ray player.

That was until Father's Day. As the thoughtful wife, I knew how much he wanted to get the PS Move. (Even though I thought it was stupid since we already had the Wii!) I had not only got him the Move with the game Sports Champs in the bundle, but I also got him Yoostar 2, so he had another game to play as well.

Mid-game, the screen on the TV flashed. The Playstation light started blinking. What we had experienced was the Yellow Light of Death. Our Playstation 3 was pretty much done for and the game was stuck inside. The fan wouldn't turn on so we were pretty sure our Playstation was done.

The game system, through gift cards that were forgotten from Christams and a trade in to Game Stop, has now been replaced. It was a long 24 hours, but the original Playstation 3, only 20 GB but reverse compatible to the Playstation 2 games, will never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace and I hope when you are refurbished you will make another family very happy!

To the tune of The Night Chicago Died!

In the heat of a dueling battle
In the land of the Video Games
When the Playstation 3 died
And now it needs to be replaced

When a man named Eli
Tried to make that game his very own
And he called his wife to fight
With the forces of the PS Move

I heard my husband cry
I heard him pray the night his Playstation 3 died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Good Bye

I heard my husband cry
I heard him pray the night his Playstation 3 died
Brother what a bad gift he got
Brother he can no longer play with it
Yes it was the YLOD

And the sound of the blinking light
Though the fan had gave it all
'Til the last of the video game
Had surrendered and died

There was shouting in the room
And the sound of stomping feet
And I asked him what happened
To the Playstation 3 he did tend

I heard my husband cry
I heard him pray the night his Playstation 3 died
Brother now the game is stuck
Brother can you help get it out
Glory be!

I heard my husband cry
I heard him pray the night his Playstation 3 died
Brother all the memories we had
Brother all the games we played
Yes it was the YLOD

And there was no sound at all
The fan had taken the final fall
Then the TV turned to a blue screen
The situation seemed real mean
And he kissed the Playstation face
And he brushed his tears away

The night his Playstation 3 died
The night his Playstation 3 died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed

The Night Chicago Died

BBG - Dave would be crying without his video too. In fact, his first serious girlfriend broke up with him because he spent too much time at the arcade. He was in his 20's;) lol lucky for me!

Ahhhhh internet, video games, cell phones, DVR's, PS3's, how did we survive when we were children? Oh yeah, we played in dirt - outside!

I know right... we had to use our imagination... we got dirty... we rode our bike... now we play on the Wii fit... we do sword fights and we do it all at the comfort of our couch... lol

I know that I am personally in mourning. Any time a piece of electronics dies, it is a sad, sad day.

I think Eli will be done mourning when it is replaced with anger for teasing him about this... lol

So funny!! I don't care how old they get, there's always still a little boy inside who can't do without his games! :) Glad to hear it all worked out!

It would have been better if the system wouldn't have died... but it did so I figure - write about it and possibly regain some of the cost back... ha ha... like that happens!

Motown2Chitown 5 years ago

Exactly...I agree - no death for the PS3 would have been a much better scenario to start from. :)

I do believe it has been dying for awhile though. We thought the network was still down and with the new one we were finally able to reconnect again. And the picture. Not that the graphics were shabby before, but now they are so much brighter. I guess it has been going for ahwile but in all fairness - we have had it for 6 years now. It was gonna happen eventually!

Motown2Chitown 5 years ago

True - they don't live forever like we do....lol

@Mo - On a good note - it has been upgraded and hopefully we have at least another 6 years out of this one so no more drama for awhile... lol

@Manthy - It truly is a sad tale and I will definately be the supportive wife while he grieves! :( Thanks for your support and keeping our family in thought through this tragic occurence!

A great poem but describes in a lighted hearted way a very sad state of affairs. In the old days men had affairs with other women nowadays they bring their consoles to bed. It is an addiction like any other but at least he is not gambling your house away or drinking himself silly every night. You could dress up as a PS3 console and see if that flies! LOL

OMG, Spirit Whisperer - I often say that I'm a gamer's widow...lol Your comment is brilliant - and TRUE!

@Austinstar - and don't forget the price too. My son is easily entertained by a hot wheel that costs a dollar... my husband on the other hand wants the real deal... my son can push a cooler around and find it fun... by husband wants game systems... lol

Jim, my husband took it pretty hard too... unfortunately we are unable to bury it. We sent it in to get refurbished so the next family will have a frankenplaystation... lol If I was smart, I would have taken a picture of him and the PS3. It could have been a lasting memory! LOL

Awwww - I should have gotten Dave an XBOX for fathers day! Shoot - I got him an outdoor grill. I bet he would have used the XBOX more.

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

@jpcmc - It was a sad sad day. We knew it was coming eventually... we could tell she was getting sick. It doesn't mean we miss her any less, even if we did replace her quickly. :)

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

@Real - I still recomend the PS3. They are better systems then Xboxes, at least in my opinion. We have always been sony people. However, the grill will definately take you out of the kitchen more... so bravo. Having a husband addicted to video games isn't always the best thing... lol

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO

We have the PS3 my nephew says XBOX is better? He's 13 though so you never know what his reasons are though!

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

I think it kind of depends on the person... they both have graphics but the games are way different. My husband wishes that he had an Xbox as well because there are some games on there he can't get with the PS3. Most of the games we follow... like the fighting games are on Sony. I guess that is why I favor it. Really, I prefer the Wii over all the other systems anyway. :)

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO

I bet they both have their finer points - like anything else. Dave thinks it's hilarious that Maddy plays Black Ops really good. I turn the sound down and there's no head set - he wonders how the guys would feel knowing a 9 year old girl just kicked their butts! Lol

barbergirl28 profile image

Ha ha - they would probably cry like a little girl... oh wait, bad play on wors... lol

@Maggie May - My husband is happy that we finally had a boy. That means he can use him as an excuse to buy boy toys... lol

@Real - go figure that it is already taken... did he try other screen names... like... stayaway9yearolddgtercrazypop....

just a suggestion! :)

barbergirl28 profile image

@Sharyn - I send my sypmpathy to you as well. I feel bad that I got the song stuck in your head, but the second the PS3 died was the second that song got stuck in my head and it hasn't left yet.

Thank you for your condolences... I will pass them on to my husband. :)

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO

That would be more appropriate:) she doesn't know this yet.....her birthday is Friday and Dave bought her an XBOX:). She will be in 7th heaven!

I bought her boring old clothes and a few little girly things. Now you see why they favor him!

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

That is awesome... I am a playstation widow... not because the playstation died but since we replaced it... I haven't seen much of my husband.

I would love the clothes and the girly stuff! LOL... I go through phases with video games, but I hate shopping so I would rather have someone do it for me! LOL :)

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO

Its funny how that works - Dave lives here, works here at least part time and I rarely see him. He's in the office or playing video. I don't bitch either because I know where he is:) I can live with that. Lol.

I hate REAL shopping! I just shop o line as much as possible. I actually enjoy shopping on real stores a few times a year - during slow seasons. Christmas shopping - not for me - too many peoples

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

I think one of the reasons that I don't like shopping is cause I find it difficult to find what I am looking at without actually feeling it in my hands... Although I don't mind when I am at a decent size. So... I haven't liked shopping much since I got pregnant cause I am still working on the extra pregnancy weight... bummer!

Eli is off to go play video games again... he has to catch up cause nothing is saved anymore! Ha ha!

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO

Were going to be rolling the XBOX out in a matter of hours - I'm sure I'll be a gaming widow soon:). Oh well there's a lot to be said for guys who are easily entertained:)!!

barbergirl28 profile image

That just means we can start a group... The Video Game Widowers group... ha ha... we will have to come up with some fun activities to take our minds off of our losses! LOL

I hope it involves online shopping:) lol. I bet it will involve lots of hubbing!

barbergirl28 profile image

I feel the exact same way twilightnera... if my laptop died I don't know what I would do! LOL... although I have to admit, I am not to happy to have replaced it. I seem to have become a playstation widow! LOL

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO

I've been in the mood for writing things - 1/2 way - then I get a little stuck. I have so many now that I can usually find something else to pick up and finish.

I agree with both of you - I'd literally cry if I lost my laptop!

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

I have a bunch that I am working on... meaning they are halfway finished and I lost my mojo so they have just been sitting there doing nothing. The problem is, I am in a rut and having a hard time really thinking of any ideas. Nothing is really sticking out to me. So this is what happens when you have reached over a 120 hubs... lol... even with no ideas... I still can't live without my laptop! LOL

NOOooo! The horror, the horror.

I feel for your loss.

So glad you managed to find a replacement but how on earth did you survive 24 hours. Did ya go cold turkey? lol

Great poem but I kept hearing the tune 'The night they burned old Dixie down' playing in my head?

How odd!

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

@molometer - it was a hard 24 hours; my husband spent a lot of time craddled up on the floor in the fetal position. He wouldn't eat; he wouldn't drink. I wasn't sure if we were going to make it. I wish they had a drug for video game withdrawal. Hopefully after this is more known, someone will come up with one! :)

I am wiping away the tears as I try and type this comment....I know it has been 15 months since the PS3 left, and I do not want to bring up bad memories but I just wanted to say that even though this is a very sad hub....that I really enjoyed reading it....very well done....and I am sure that you have adopted a new PS3 by now...so although your new system can never bring back the original one....it can at least help make some new memories....lol.

I loved this hub.....bookmarking and sharing.

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 4 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

I hate to admit it... but the Playstation 3 was replaced almost immediately... like within days. I don't think my husband could live without it. We still cherish the old memories... and by memory... the actual memory of the old system. The new one we got has a whole lot less memory. On the other hand, it is wireless which is a bonus! :) Glad you enjoyed this!
