The Old Republic Reference: Class and Companion Stats

Introduction

In Star Wars: The Old Republic your character and character's companions will routinely encounter new gear and items which boost stats in one of seven primary fields, and several subfields. These stats can be confusing and overwhelming at first, but this reference sheet will provide a few easy charts that can help players find what gear will suit them best.

Unlike other games in the MMO genre, the developers have specifically set aside one stat for each class to represent their primary focus, no matter what specializations that choose to take as the game goes on. A Soldier, for instance, will want to increase their 'Aim' skill regardless of whether or not they choose to be a Commando or a Vanguard as their specialty class.

In addition to the Primary Stats there are a series of Bonus Stat boosters found on equipment which directly modify certain aspects of a character. These often provide a stronger bonus to that skill than you would receive from a stat boost at the same level, but since each Primary Stat affects multiple skills the net gain will be about the same, or even a little less.

Primary Stat Breakdown

Strength: Primary stat for Jedi Knights and Sith Warriors. Used for melee combat stats

Presence: Increases the strength of your companions

Aim: Primary stat for Bounty Hunters and Soldiers. Enhances ranged combat skills

Cunning: Primary stat for Imperial Agents and Smugglers. Makes tech skills more efficient

Endurance: Secondary stat for all classes. Increases health.

Willpower: Primary stat for Jedi Consulars and Sith Inquisitors. Strengthens force techniques

Expertise: Improves PvP effectiveness (useless in PvE)

Bonus Stats

Absorption Rating: Determines the amount of damage that a personal shield will mitigate (only applies to shield wearers)

Accuracy Rating: Affects the chance to hit your target. Can be further broken down by type of attack: Melee, Ranged, Tech and Force

Alacrity Rating: Reduces the time it takes to activate a skill, or to use a channeled ability

Critical Rating: Increases the chance of getting a critical hit

Defense Rating: Makes you more likely to dodge attacks

Power: Increases damage dealt. Can be broken down further to Melee, Ranged, Tech and Force

Shield Rating: Increases the chance that your shield will activate when attacked

Surge Rating: Makes critical hits deal/heal more damage

Secondary Stat

While your primary stat should be your focus, there is also a secondary stat that can help boost your performance in combat. In some MMOs this can vary by class, but fortunately in The Old Republic it's the same stat for everyone. So there's no confusion I'm going to write it in big, bold, capitalized letters.

THE SECONDARY STAT FOR ALL CLASSES AND COMPANIONS IS ENDURANCE

If you are a fan of PvP you will also want to boost your Expertise rating, which can be done easily by purchasing gear from the PvP vendor. This stat is useless outside of PvP, so if you're just in it for the single player or cooperative play you can safely ignore it.

Companion Stats

Your character will gain companions as you travel along, and each companion has a primary stat which may or may not be the same as your class' primary stat. Additionally your companion will use a different type of armor from you, so I've listed those as well. Hopefully this will help you to determine what armor you should keep for your companions, and which ones you can safely sell or dismantle.
