Those Two Beautiful Blue Birds Started It!
According to the artist who created the blue birds paper mache ,Ms Jonni Good, she made them in 7 hours (she made another one in just 4 hours).. It was a gift project. Wow ..(what a lucky recipient!!)
. Along with the photo was a DIY tutorial on how to make the project.
My First Clay Charms, My Babies
I was not successful with the tutorial on how to make those paper mache blue birds. I tried using another medium which is the salt and flour dough. Again, it ended in disaster. I browsed the internet and came across a tutorial on how to make air dry clay. Since it has different variations, I had to try different recipes till I got it right.
When I started doing clay, I made projects so tiny that, with just a little amount of dough, I can can create all sorts of figures I fancy . I added lariats and keychains so that they can be used as mobile phone or bag and coin purse accessory.. Friends and relatives had a feast. I just wanted to make charms and give it to them with or without occasion. Come on, they're just like tiny toys. Children would ask me to do certain figures and add them to their School ID chain holder.. The gift I gave to a friend, she turned it into a rear view mirror accessory.. It was a huge honeybee.
Mini Clay Dolls with Legs This Time
Hmm.. I thought it's about time to level up.. How about dolls with legs? I have no tutor to instruct me on what to do, or on how to properly do it..? Oh well, who cares what they will look like..? They're my dolls.
Emi was my first, with legs.
Turning Passion Into A Business
Some friends knew about my hobby. They started to ask me to make them clay figures for party giveaways or party favors. Of course I cannot delegate my work to others so I have to do them myself, one by one, free hand, without a particular model to copy, and without molds that will replicate them fast and easy like the polymer clay. Doing those requests gave me more experience, doing a particular figure for the first time and in bulk. Imagine me doing 50 pcs of Japanese dolls and did them with no two pieces alike. And I did more gieshas and ninjas for grade six students. I find the most difficult figures to make are the ladies' shoes and sandals. I only did around 30 pcs for a friend. I declined other requests for more shoes and sandals, but I did several pieces for my personal collection.
After doing some more clay dolls, charms and jewelries, I wanted to do a more complicated way to present my clay figures. I thought of placing them inside vials which I eventually did. I had to make the items smaller to fit inside the small bottles. Geishas and ninjas inside bottles..? Why not? And flowers, too, like tulips, roses sunflowers, and calla lilies. Hmmm.. not a bad idea.
Creating dreams in clay is one of the best things that ever came to me. Now I'm into a more exciting project, miniature teapots using 99.9% clay for its embellishments. No paintings,. No drawings. All but my signature on each piece of work.
