A hidden gem in the franchise, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles not only lets one play through the stories of Resident Evil 0, 1, 3, and a chapter depicting Umbrella's downfall, using the Wiimote and nunchuk as a knife and gun, but also offers files from those games, hidden dossiers for characters from the series, and the chance to experience events from Ada Wong and Albert Wesker's perspectives. Similar to previous numerals in Resident Evil, obtaining infinite ammunition provides the greatest pleasure to players. The requirements are simple: Earn an S rank on all missions in Hard mode, yet the process is far from easy. With enemies tougher and more aggressive, you will feel like unlimited ammo represents the only chance to survive such stages. However, even in a game as linear as a railshooter, methods exist to make the goal easier to obtain. If you understand what an 'S' constitutes, and follow certain techniques when engaging enemies and bosses, you can unlock infinite ammunition in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
What Makes an 'S'?
To earn 'S's in all levels on Hard to win your ultimate prize, you must first understand what constitutes an 'S' in a single level. A stage's performance is evaluated by Clear Time, Enemy Hits, Critical Hits, Objects Destroyed, and Files Obtained:
- Clear Time is how long it takes you to complete a level. If your Clear Time persists below an A, trying finishing the level faster, or hastening the boss's destruction.
Enemy Hits are not every time you shoot an enemy; it's the number of enemies killed in a stage. Even leeches, tiny spiders, and roaches (Yes, zombie roaches are in this game) count toward this grade. Wonder why you didn't get an S in Enemy Hits in a stage swarming with leeches? You forgot to grenade all those leeches, that's why.
One gets a Critical Hit by shooting a zombie in the head so its head pops off. Next time you see a zombie, point your crosshairs at its forehead until the crosshairs turn red; that's the Critical Hit area. If you shoot a zombie, but the head doesn't disappear, it's not a Critical Hit. Also to note: Getting “Critical Hits” on anything other than zombies DOES NOT count toward the score.
Objects Destroyed is anything not an enemy you can shoot and destroy, such as desks, chairs, lights, windows, etc. Shooting paintings off the wall counts too. Unsure whether something is destructible or not? Put the crosshairs on it. If the crosshairs glow white, it's fair game.
Files Obtained speaks for itself. By destroying objects, you'll reveal files, and each stage has a set number of files. The more you collect, the higher grade you'll receive. The best thing about this grade is after you collect a file and complete a stage, you never have to collect that file again. Collect all files in a level, and you'll have a free S each time you complete it. You can even collect your files on a lower difficulty setting, and not have to collect them again on Hard.
Test Your Might, Then Grab a Partner
Since you're reading this article, the writer assumes you're the one desiring infinite weapons on this game. Your skill level should enable you to get an 'S' by yourself on Normal, or at least in one or two of the stages in the Resident Evil 0 Chapter. Once your proficiency grows, grab a friend, because that's the easiest way you're getting those 'S's. Take your partner through a playthrough of the game before you tackle Hard, unless you have confidence in your buddy's skill level.
Weapon Selection and Share System
Whatever weapon you're most comfortable with you can use. Your partner should always select a machine gun, the reasons explained in the next section. While engaging the Hard playthrough, you should grab all the weapons, especially grenades, your partner only grabbing bullets for the weapon he or she selected at the beginning. Another important fact to remember: The bullets you and your partner don't use during your mission-run count toward your starting weapon for the next mission. Therefore, if you find yourself facing a level with limited ammo pick-ups, a viable technique is to pick Easy Mode, complete a level with an abundance of ammo drops for the weapon you want, rinse and repeat until your desired gun is full, then return to Hard.
Engaging the Level
Welcome to the section you've been waiting for: How to accomplish the impossible. A vital note: The scores toward the grade you and your partner earn are not cumulative. For example, if you both kill all enemies in a level, you'll each get a B, since you each only killed half the enemies in the stage, which will make the Enemy Hits a B. The higher grade between both players counts as the final grade; therefore, if you get an S in Critical Hits, yet your partner gets a C, the final grade will be an S. It's dumb and ridiculous, and makes you wonder how playing with a partner helps. Follow the tips below for success and understanding:
You, or whoever has the most experience, should kill all the enemies, the other player focusing on destroying all the levels' objects. As mentioned before, the machine gun facilities object destruction greatly.
Use your grenades to kill large groups of enemies before the camera turns from them; your partner should grenade rooms with a large number of computer monitors. Don't let an enemy escape undead. Don't let any objects remain standing.
For easy Critical Hits and to save your health: Never let a zombie grab you. When one lunges or hugs you for a zombie kiss, have your partner machine-gun it, which will leave them alive on Hard and give you the perfect angle to earn a Critical Hit. Rinse and repeat, but don't allow too many to get in your face at once, or you'll get swung on like a pinata.
It's recommended you and your partner combine your might to tackle bosses. Keep in mind though, whoever lands the final blow gets the Enemy Hit.
Shotgun Spinners, human leeches, chimeras, and hunters. Machine gun bats, birds, bees, lickers, and monkeys. Magnum and rocket launcher bosses. Use your pistol mostly on zombies and dogs, sometimes weakened enemies. Grenade leeches, little spiders, and roaches. On Hard, this is law.
After you beat a level, if you and your partner come short of an 'S' grade, see what needs to be improved and focus on that grade. Three 'S's and two 'A's equal an 'S'. Anything less will not.
