What are 'Hobbies'?

What is a hobby? What could turn into a hobby? Wikipedia says:

A hobby is a regularly undertaken activity that is done for pleasure, typically, during one's leisure time.

This is in fact very accurate. Almost anything can be made into a hobby as long as it gives you some pleasure and satisfaction and does not disturb other important chores. A hobby should fit into your leisure time and not distract you from other important tasks.

Hobbies for men and hobbies for women may differ slightly. But most of the time hobbies do no sexually discriminate. For an example, hobbies such as swimming, cycling, reading, gardening, writing, collecting stuff etc can be done by either gender. It is just a matter of identifying the hobby that you are most passionate about.

So if you are a man and hoping to pick up a hobby, here are the possible Top 10 Choices of Hobbies for Men!!!

#01 Pick: Collecting Stuff...

OK, I wanted to keep choice number 01 as broad as possible, and hence we will discuss about the things that you can collect and that will make up a great collection by someday. There are a billion and one things you can collect, provided you have money to acquire them, energy to maintain them and enthusiasm to continue with the hobby.

Most people collect cars. Yes, some do collect real cars, but here I refer to model cars and not necessarily cars, but all types of vehicles. Take a look at the picture given. These are real models of cars that have been scaled down. Most of these cars can open doors, bonnets, turn the steering wheels and even change tires. That's how awesome they are. And if you are a vehicle enthusiast this would be an ideal hobby for you.

There are many many people who collect stamps as a hobby. Stamps are fun to collect and easy too. It doesn't require much space-just a stamp book or a scrapbook to place them in. The more countries your collection consists of, the more valuable it is. Also some old stamps increase in value so so much after sometime, specially if they are a unique print.

If you have trouble finding stamps, you can always buy them on online stores such as Amazon. They are really cheap a great way to spend your free time.

Best value stamp collection to get started...

Although relatively difficult, a lot of people do collect notes and coins. Even old notes and coins do increase in value as they get older and older. So after two three decades your coin collection could worth a fortune.

Coins may be hard to come by, but your elders sure must have some notes and coins hidden up in old cellars and boxes and cupboards. Also you can buy special anniversary coins which will worth a lot in near future. General rule is, the older the coin, the more value it possesses.

These three aren't the only things you can collect as a hobby. Baseball cards are a great collectible for baseball fans. Here is a list of things you can collect.

  • Movies
  • Games
  • Relics
  • Drawings/Paintings
  • Antiques

Don't be restrained by any list. You can collect almost anything as long as you can afford them and gives you a genuine pleasure.

Cycling as a hobby

#02 Pick: Cycling

All men must know how to ride a bicycle. If not, it's high time you learned how. Cycling can be done anywhere, I mean in your neighborhood or when you are on vacation in some exotic location. You can cycle in the wild and in the city.

Cycling can be made a hobby if you don't mind a little sweat and a long healthy life. Cycling gives you a strong cardiac exercise and benefits your mental and physical health. You will be much more sick-free and it's all because of a hobby. How awesome is that?

You can cycle alone or in a group. Cycling in a group will keep you motivated.

If you are serious about cycling, you better shift to a better mountain bike and take on more adventurous environments such as woods and small mountains.

reading

#03 Pick: Reading

There is no gender discrimination when it comes to reading. Reading really does make a man complete. But you will have to read a diverse collection of reads. Or you can limit your reading to your desired direction.

Most commonly people read novels-romantic, horror, true stories etc. But there are also other reads such as magazines, newspapers, online articles, documentaries, journals, reviews etc.

#04 Pick: Playing Video Games

Fortunately or otherwise, playing video games has become a widespread hobby around the world in modern times. The consoles are cheap and games are in abundance. I really don't need to point out the positives of video gaming, do I? So we game!!!

There is nothing wrong with this kind of hobby if you do balance your life. A hobby isn't something you get addicted to and sacrifice rather more important chores to engage in the hobby. A hobby must be your leisure time activity. And as long as video gaming stays that way, there are no issues with video gaming.

#05 Pick: Photography

Photography is becoming a growing trend now-a-days as DSLR cameras are able to produce excellent quality photos and at the same time their prices are going down.

Photography can be your leisure time activity as well as your part time job. This is one of those hobbies that could pay. If you are considerably good at it, you can produce your photos to exhibitions and win or even be an official photographer for some certain events and earn a few bucks.

If you are thinking of taking up photography as a hobby read my hub on how to select an entry level DSLR camera that will serve your purpose.

#06: Camping

Camping is a great way to get in touch with the nature and cleanse your lungs in the meantime. Camping as a hobby could be time consuming and should be reserved for you holidays and vacations.

Camping near lakes, in the woods or in mountainous environments could be fun and adventurous. Camping in outdoors is probably the best way to get out of the concrete jungles and get into a real jungle and wash away your stressful life even for a short time.

Also camping can be done with your family or your peers. It will be a great way to get in touch with your primal manly skills.

#07 Pick: Gardening

Gardening is a great way to get your hands dirty while it saves some bucks for your household. Gardening can be either for pleasure or for commercial purposes. Either decorative plants and flowers or vegetables.

Whatever you chose to garden, it is a great way to keep you occupied in your leisure times. Gardening may need a little extra time than other hobbies mentioned above since the plants will need daily monitoring.

Gardening can be quite pleasurable specially when you see the fruits of your hard work. Also it is a great way to get all of your family engaged in an activity together.

To get started read my hub on gardening.

Chess as a hobby

#08 Pick: Chess

This may not seem a hobby, but trust me there are even special places establishments (like restaurants and clubs) specifically built for Chess enthusiasts.

Chess is a game of intelligence. It is a great way to keep your brain sharp during your free times. One who doesn't understand Chess will find it boring and dull, but once you get to know the game it's an addiction.

Chess enthusiasts play chess regularly on real boards and online, they read books on Chess and you can even challenge your friends for a friendly duel.

#09 Pick: Writing

Writing is one of the oldest hobbies. Early days it was letter writing and writing for newspapers and journals. But today, with technology, writing has been transformed to book/novel writing, review writing and personal blogging.

Any form of writing is acceptable as a hobby. What matters is selecting your best choice of interest and writing on it. This hub I'm writing now, is one of my many hobbies, which eventually does pay off, monetarily.

There are no hard and fast rules as to what, when or how you should write, as long as it gives you a certain pleasure and a relaxation. Writing improves your brain activity and imagination skills. So it is one of the better ways to spend your free time.

#10 Pick: Guitarist/Pianist/Drummer

Last but not least I decided to add something related to music. Probably this doesn't deserve the #10 spot, but better than not mentioning at all. I shifted this to number 10 spot because taking up a musical instrument is not something everybody can do. If you look at the list above everything is doable by anybody. But taking up a musical instrument and getting good at it requires a certain skill or talent.

Anyway perfecting a musical instrument is a great way to relax yourself. It doesn't necessarily waste your time, but rather balance your life along with all day-to-day chores and work stress. Music is the food for your soul.

Getting good at something requires practice. And playing an instrument not only improves your creativity but also improves your brain functioning-so it's a balanced approach for a leisure time hobby.

Conclusion...

Don't get frustrated that your current hobby or a hobby that you are hoping to pick up is not in the list. This list is a mere creation by my own imagination. So yours could be better and I might have missed some better hobbies for men.

So leave your comments about what you think are the best hobbies for men...or women. Thank you for reading my hub throughout. If you like this hub, rate it, share it and follow me.
