Top 10 Interesting Things To Do When Bored

Updated on February 4, 2014

1. Visit interesting sites

There are loads of off-beat and fascinating sites online to keep you engaged when you feel bored. Listverse, Buzzfeed and Stumbleupon are three such sites that have a virtually inexhaustible amount of interesting content ranging from pleasantly surprising to all-out bizarre!

2. Go to a shopping mall and observe the people there

This is an activity that will be an educational experience that teaches you more about human nature than you thought you knew. And the best thing is, it won't cost you a dime as you won't be buying anything. There is also the possibility that you may meet some interesting people and make friends.

3. Maintain a blog and rant about things that irritate you

Are you constantly irritated about something, or things, in your life? Are you so irritated that you wouldn't mind blogging about it? Then don't think again. Blog about it. For all you know, there might be other people in this world who are equally as irritated as you. And there may be many of them. Here's your readership!

You could earn through placing Google ads on your blog. The more traffic you receive, the better. After all, traffic is the Holy Grail of making money online!

4. Step out and play with animals on your street

In many parts of the world, stray animals roam the streets of towns and cities. Do you live in such a place?

Why don't you step out and throw a biscuit to a dog or rub a cat on its chin till it gently purrs? Animals make great friends.

I must however, warn you to exercise discretion.

5. Watch a news channel

Nowadays, watching news is often more entertaining than watching a soap opera! Sit down on your couch and catch up on what's happening in politics, business and sports. Browse through various channels and compare on which side of the ideological divide they are on. Does this channel support pharmaceutical companies facing charges of low quality medicines? Does that one support a sportsperson who's been dropped from the national team? Find out!

6. Call up a friend

In a time of extreme boredom, a friend makes for excellent company. Call up a friend and crack a couple of jokes. Laugh out load. Make plans for a trip to the South Pole. Friendship rules

7. Help someone with a task

The world is full of people who struggle with everyday tasks but seldom receive any help from anyone around them. Chances are, your neighbourhood has many such people. Reach out and help the granny next door, or the sick person at the end of the street. Do it for free. You will feel a sense of fulfillment that is extremely rare and special.

8. Take photos on your digicam and upload them to stock photo sites. You could make a bit of money!

Pull out your digicam, or even your mobile if it has a decent camera. Take loads of snaps of your neighbourhood, do a bit of editing on some free software like Photoscape or Pixlr, and upload to a stock photo site like Flickr or Shutterstock. Chances are, most of them will be rejected, but if some make it, you could earn a bit every month through downloads.

9. Chat with a stranger on omegle.com

Omegle is a site where you can chat with strangers. Registration is not required, and you can find chat partners based on interest areas. There are thousands of people online at any given time, so you will never run out of chat partners. Just be careful not to share your personal details. Also beware of freaky individuals.

10. Make a simple video and upload it to Youtube. You might make a bit of money!

In the latest PowerPoint (2013), it is possible to export the presentation as a video. Add to this the fact that norms for the Youtube Partner Program have been relaxed, you could get a fair bit of money from your videos. Make sure that you use only images that you own though.
