We look at what exactly Moon Sand is, the ingredients of Moon Sand and we check out some of the products you can buy in the range of toys. So basically we tell you everything you need to know about this popular construction toy for children.
Moon Sand has been around for a while now and it is ever growing in popularity. But many people are still wondering what exactly Moon Sand is. Will it be safe for your children? Can you save some money and make it yourself? Is this a good toy to buy for your children? What are the ingredients and what happens if it gets wet? Well, here we look at all those questions and more. This will be your one stop guide to Moon Sand.
What Exactly Is It?
The idea behind Moon Sand is that your children will have that lovely sticky sand that you sometimes get at the beach, the kind that allows you to build sand castles. The problem with regular play sand is that it is dry and can’t really be used to build anything. The only real option then if you want to build sand castles at home is to wander down to the beach with a big wheelbarrow. So the inventors came up with the idea of Moon Sand, a mouldable sand that never dries out. This is designed to be safe for children and reusable as long as it is safely stored.
If you want a few more technical details we can tell you that the sand is coated in a hydrophobic compound which means the grains of stand stick to each other and bond together. This means the sand can be used in moulds to create blocks or other fun designs. The ingredients are pretty simple, just ordinary sand with a few extras. Even if the sand gets wet, it’s unique properties allow it to be dried off and restored to it’s original state. This is very clever stuff that really is great for children.
Safe & Easy
Another thing that some parents may be concerned about is the safety of this product. Despite the chemical processes involved in making the sand this is non toxic and is not harmful to children. If some of the sand is swallowed it should pass through the system without any ill effects, obviously if a large quantity is consumed then it would be wise to consult a doctor. Another benefit is that it is not thin like regular sand, so there is less chance of children getting this in their eyes.
Another great thing about Moon Sand is that it is possible to make your own. Admittedly this is not quite as good as the original stuff but you can get a recipe for Moon Sand and have a go at making your own batch of it. Chances are though that yours will not last nearly as long as the original kind.
Usually when you buy this product you are given a storage device to keep it in. If you do not have one of these it is recommended that you store it in a Tupperware container. This sand should never dry out and should in theory last forever. If it gets wet you should leave it on some newspaper to dry out for a few hours.
Moon Sand Toys
The makers of Moon Sand have not sat back since they brought the stuff out. They have come up with various toys that work along with the sand. For instance there are construction toys that allow you to form bricks and build buildings. There are bakery toys which allow you to make sand cakes and other things. There are lots of different colors of sand and you can mix and match these to form your very own colors as you go along. In many respects this sand is like a modern day Playdough.
There really are some great toys in this range. Having said that the fact is that if your child has an active imagination they may simply be happy with a simple pile of the sand. There are endless possibilities for what you can do with this stuff, the people who designed this really did come up with something very clever.
Overall then as you can see Moon Sand is pretty clever stuff. As well as being safe and reasonably affordable this is a toy that will last a lifetime. If your children enjoy playing with toys that give their imagination the chance to run wild then this is something they will really enjoy. Get yourself some Moon Sand today and go get creating.
