Wooden Puzzles - At Discount Prices
Wooden puzzles are great educational toys. Even the most basic puzzle can help with the development of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The learning doesn’t usually stop there, however. Kids puzzles usually contain bright colors, which can be used by parents for color recognition and reinforcement. Some also include different geometric shapes, numbers, or letters of the alphabet. Obviously, such kids puzzles can enhance learning in those areas. Another reason puzzles are good educational toys is because they teach spatial recognition. Based on my experience as a teacher and as a grandparent, I’ve included some of my favorite wooden puzzles for kids below.
Kids puzzles come in all sorts of shapes, designs, sizes, and themes. If your child is into horses, for example, you can find kids puzzles comprised of equine images. Oftentimes, some children relate better to toys, games, puzzles, and books that incorporate a subject that the child finds interesting. You can find puzzles for almost any age, too. Even babies can play with simple puzzles if the baby is old enough to handle and manipulate the pieces. Older children, teenagers, and adults can all find puzzles that address their skill levels and hold their interest.
Kids puzzles can be constructed of a number of different materials. Some are made of plastic, some are made of cardboard, and some are made of pressed paper. Each of these materials has its pluses and minuses. In my opinion, however, the best are childrens wooden puzzles.
Why do I think wood puzzles are superior to other types of kids puzzles? It’s because we’ve been through a lot of puzzles! Puzzles made of pressed paper and cardboard are usually the least expensive ones you can find, but they don’t hold up well. Over time, the paper begins to deteriorate, and the pieces might actually fall apart. Even if the pieces remain intact, the edges sometimes curl up, making it all but impossible to fit the pieces into their proper places within the puzzle. Plastic puzzles are better, but even they can become distorted and misshapen. Wood puzzles are far superior to other types.
With childrens puzzles, the pieces and the overall puzzle itself will remain clear and sharp for years. You won’t have to worry about a piece’s disintegrating because it got damp from being in a child’s mouth. Wood puzzles are also easy to clean. All you have to do is to wipe off the pieces and board with a wet cloth. If the puzzle is really dirty, a mild soap can be used for extra cleaning.
Wooden Puzzles for Kids
When choosing the best wooden puzzles for kids, keep several things in mind. Sometimes there’s a careful balancing act in choosing a puzzle that’s just the right difficulty level. A puzzle that’s too simple will bore a child, and one that’s too difficult will probably leave the child frustrated. Most wooden puzzles come with a recommendation for appropriate ages, but this isn’t always foolproof. It’s a good general guideline, but your child is an individual, and children develop at different rates. Your son or daughter might be a little behind most kids his or her age, or they could be more advanced.
If your child has played with wooden puzzles before, you should have a good idea of his skill level. If puzzles are new to your little one, I suggest starting with a cheap, simple puzzle. How quickly he solves the puzzle will give you a good place to start. Generally speaking, the younger and less skilled the child is, the larger and fewer the puzzle pieces should be.
Melissa and Doug Puzzles
Melissa and Doug practically wrote the book on wooden puzzles - and on wooden toys, in general. The United States puzzle is a wonderful way to teach kids about our nation and about the states' spatial relationships to each other. All the states, their nicknames, and their capitals are printed on the front of the pieces, and intersting facts can be found on the back of each piece. The united States puzzle is recommended for ages five through eight.
The pirate puzzle will be a blast for any little pseudo-buccaneer. It comes with forty-eight pieces and depicts a swashbucking scene that includes pirates, a sea serpent, a shark, a tentacle of an octopus, and a pirate ship complete with the jolly roger. The storage tray is made of wood, too. This puzzle is recommended for ages three through five.
Kids Wooden Puzzles with the Alphabet
What better way to teach the alphabet than with kids wooden puzzles? If you say the letters to your child as he matches them into their correct spaces, four different learning modalities can be incorporated at one time: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. This is a great way to introduce your toddler or preschooler to the alphabet! To see more wooden puzzles with letters, click the product shown below.
Buy Puzzles from Disney
I've never known any kids who didn't love Disney movies and Disney characters, so why not allow this interest to carry over into kids puzzles? Some of the subjects offered are Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella, Cars, Toy Story, Disney Princess, Tinkerbell, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Goofy. Your kids are sure to want more than one! Click the Amazon product to see them all.
Buy Puzzles with Knobs
Puzzles with knobs attached to the pieces are perfect for very young children. If the knobs are large and easy to grasp, it's even better. Pieces that are a little thicker and "chunkier" are usually the best. Most of the time, babies around a year old are able to manipulate them, with a little practice. The graphics/colors should be bright, and the shapes of the pieces should be simple and easy to "fit." These are good educational toys that can aid in hand-eye coordination, small motor skills, spatial recognition, and visual perception. Such wooden puzzles make great first puzzles for kids.
