Introduction

So, as someone who has used RPG Maker VX Ace quite a bit in the past year and a half or so, I frequent the official forums over at RPG Maker Web. I've been working slowly but surely on part two of my very own game and have been working with someone to make some music tracks for that part of my game. But, that's besides the point. This hub is not about me, it is about Donn Manalili and his up and coming action video game called You Are Not The Hero.

Without further ado, let us be off!

Kickstarter!

So, as of the time of this writing, YANTH has a Kickstarter up and running to try to meet a $12,001 (I would've personally done a $12,021 for the cheap palindrome, but that's just me, haha) monetary goal. It is over halfway there already, so I predict it will easily reach its goal. What I want to see is how much it raises in total. That's probably one of my favorite things about backing Kickstarter projects.

If you want to back this excellent video game project, please visit the official Kickstarter project page at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/812850535/you-are-not-the-hero

Overview

So, what is You Are Not The Hero? In a nutshell, you play the part of Petula, an NPC (non-player character) that's an innkeeper in a completely unassuming town. Her adventure begins when the resident group of heroes steals...err, I mean, appropriates her necklace (to sell, because isn't that what you always do in RPGs when you're playing the hero?). She then sets off on a forced adventure when her town comes under attack by a group of baddies and she must evacuate the townspeople.

So, I've read some people lambasting Donn in various gaming sites and forums for having an apparent oxymoron (an NPC being played by a player by obligation cannot be an NPC), but I feel that's just semantics. The whole point of "being the NPC" is the fact that your character has a set of goals that may not even be aligned with the classic RPG goals of saving the world and/or finding an artifact of great power. Basically, through Petula, Donn is telling a story you probably wouldn't hear about in your conventional RPG.

And there's another wrinkle. This game is being created using RPG Maker VX Ace and it isn't an RPG, at least not in the strictest sense. I call it more of a action-adventure game (in the spirit of Zelda). I'm personally stoked to see the game in development, as I played an early demo a few months ago and it was pretty fun. It's a game that can be serious when it has to, but takes itself pretty lightly most of the time (which reminds me of Dragon Quest, and Dragon Quest is awesome, so YANTH is awesome as well!).

Gameplay

So, what's the gameplay like? Well, it's a long series of mini games basically. If that sounds boring to you, you should go try out the demo (look at the appropriate section later on in this hub for details) and prove yourself wrong. It is actually really, really fun. There's a mini game near the start where you are running away from a group of guards. If you get caught, you have a button masher mini game where you have to press the left and right arrow keys as fast as possible to break free of the guards' collective grasps. This game also has a lot of platformer elements which are most obvious in the second part of the first chapter where you have to reach the top of the town chapel to ring a bell. Achievements (for not getting caught and reaching the top of the chapel in under a certain amount of time) keep the gameplay fresh and push the player to try and better their previous efforts as well.

Videos Speak Louder Than Words

So, my words do not sway you? Or perhaps you're more of a visual type. Well, look to the right and check out the Chapter 2 Teaser Trailer for You Are Not The Hero! Everything I have mentioned above should shine through in that video.

Demos Speak Louder Than Videos

But alas, you want more, you say? I have you covered there as well. To Morning Productions is the video game company of Donn Manalili and you can find the latest demo version of his game over at: http://www.tomorningproductions.com/projects.php.

If you have played YANTH's demo, did you enjoy the game?

Conclusion

In conclusion, You Are Not The Hero is shaping up to be one of the more interesting entries in the storied conglomeration of games created with RPG Maker VX Ace. If you cannot spare any money for the Kickstarter, please at least spare a share to the social network of your choice. I would appreciate it (as a fellow RPG Maker VX Ace game creator) and Donn's project needs all the exposure it can get!

Thank you for reading!
Until the next time, take care and have fun! ;)
