What some games parents can play at hme with their children to help support their learning?
Why are games important for children?
Depends on the age. We like Yahtzee to help my daughter with math. Sequence the State version for learning the capitols of the states. MasterMind, which both my 14 yo and 11 yo can win at, to learn problem solving. Scrabble is a traditional one for spelling. And our newest twist: I buy used Trivia Persuit games and put the boxes in our cars and on the end tables. When we drive somewhere we go through and ask the questions and go from youngest to oldest to see who can answer. I was supprised both the kids and my husband enjoyed "playing" on our 2 1/2 hour drive to Jefferson City last weekend. We didn't move game pieces or fill in the pies. It was just for bragging rights and I will tell you my 11 yo held her own!
I heard that Apples to Apples is a great family game on comparison of items. It is quite enjoyable and children love the challenge in thinking about the choices. Any game that requires counting and sorting is a good learning experience. Just have to make sure it is age appropriate and help them through the "winning and losing" aspect of playing games. Younger children 3-4 may get frustrated when they do not win and feel as if they are losers.
I have been writing a series on this very topic. The hubs are broken down into age groups, so that you may look through the ones that will be helpful to you. Check them out for loads of great ideas. http://rclinton5280.hubpages.com/hub/50 … ies-Part-2
Old maid...teaches matching and memory. Uno will teach both colors and numbers. Don't forget the all-time favorites like 'go to the head of the class', candyland, even hangman will teach spelling.
