I read everything I could find, not the least being the wiki, so I was prepared for the night. There are many things you can do for your first night. If you are on dirt, or before a hill, dig a stairway down. Never dig directly down because you never know what's below you. Once you are inside plug the entrance with dirt and wait between seven and ten minutes. Then come out. If you are really in a pinch, leapfrog your way to safety by pressing the spacebar while placing one pile of dirt on top of the one beneath it. You will jump on the placed dirt pile. Repeat until you are out of dirt. You are pretty safe if you are 30 or so blocks (dirt piles) high. Don't look directly at Endermen though. They are the tall black humanoids that teleport from spot to spot carrying blocks of various materials. If you happen to accidentally move your cursor over them, and you are not equipped to fight them with iron armor and weapons or better, and if you have access to a pumpkin, place it on your head and they will ignore you. Whenever I start playing a game, I learn all I can about it. It's a habit of mine. I learned the most important recipes, sword, pickaxe, and of course the crafting table, from the minecraft wiki. It is an excellent site for information on minecraft. It's at http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki and it includes tutorials on how to survive the first day, important recipes, and more. I hope this helps. Have fun playing minecraft.
