   God of War fans: What do you love about the series?
   
   I'm particularly interested in what makes the GoW series so brilliant, as I plan on buying the games for the PS3. What do you find so appealing about them? The fighting style, the roleplay elements, the story and/or how it's told, the theme, the lore? I'd like to know before I buy them, and if you could direct me to one of your favourite (written is preferable) reviews, I'd be more than glad to read it. Thanks in advance for participating and taking interest in this subject!

   I think what makes GoW so excellent was the amazing blend of graphics, storytelling, action, puzzles and overall fluidity of the game play that makes it so attractive.  You're invested from the very beginning and because of the nature of the mythology you at least have rooting interest in what is happening.  Kratos is the perfect anti-hero.  You pity him, feel sorry for him and yet judge him at the same time.  It is a game covered in gray rather than the typical black and white.

   Story is by far the biggest draw for me to the God of War series. The graphics have always been great and the gameplay equally solid, but the story really stood out. You feel bad for Kratos and what he has suffered but at the same time he is ruthless in his means of revenge. I don't want to spoil much of the story but the closest thing I can think of would be the Elric from Michael Moorcock's books. Krato's  has so much power yet no matter what he does in the end he always ends up hurting himself because of his selfish desires.

      Sounds good! Will I understand the story if I play the later PS2/ firstPS3 God of War games? Or does it require me to go right from the start to truly understand? Voted up!

      I have not played the newest one in the series but that is supposed to be a prequel. I would however recommend playing through from the first one to get the full effect.

   For me its the gameplay that makes God of War work. The puzzles are challenging, the combat (while a little frustrating) is fun and makes you rely on strategy as much as brute force...and the story is bloody awful beyond the first game. I won't spoil it, but suffice to say that Kratos is one of the most overhyped, one-dimensional characters since Master Chief. The games are still worth playing though, so yeah, go pick'em up if you can.

      I thought the story was rather engaging, but to each their own. I do agree with you on the puzzles they are by far one of the most stand out features that puts God of War above the rest of the action game pack.

   One of the things I always enjoyed about God of War was the scope. Even on the PS2, the developers made the game feel larger than life. You forget any graphical limitations of the system and just believe in this epic story. It's kind of like Shadow of the Colossus in the sense that it feels way bigger than the system could handle. It's a very graphic game, in terms of violence and sex, but it works with the storyline. It's especially enjoyable if you already have an appreciation for greek mythology. Highly recommended.
