All Barbie Movies from 2001 to present, 2015

Barbie Princess and the Pauper - my personal all-time favorite Barbie movie (mostly for the music which is so good!)
Barbie Princess and the Pauper - my personal all-time favorite Barbie movie (mostly for the music which is so good!)

Barbie is very popular in my house of two little princesses. My daughters are now 8.5 and 10 (6 and 7 when I first wrote this!) and they still love everything Barbie. They have every single movie listed here (except the new ones that are not yet available, of course) and they are very proud of their collection. They watch them all over and over and over again!

I was inspired to write this list of Barbie movies when a friend of mine asked for a Barbie movie recommendation for her young toddler, who is just getting introduced to these movies (and sure to become a big fan, too, I'm sure.) I actually recommended to her my all time favorite one - Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper.

Although they are all very good, Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper is my favorite not only because of the story line, but the music is fantastic and fun! All of the Barbie movies have beautiful music that will stay in your head all day, but not in a bad way! I probably shouldn't admit this, but I have some songs from this movie in my iPhone and sometimes I sing along to them while in my car alone.

All of these movies are available at Amazon.com (you can even pre order upcoming movies before they are released), as well as many of the dolls and toys that are associated with these movies. There's also a couple of great Barbie Movie Collections that would make wonderful gifts, and many, many more Barbie toys and gifts.

Many parents are very aware of all the Disney Princesses and their associated movies, but I have been surprised over the years at just how many moms either are not aware of the Barbie "made for DVD" movies or simply just haven't thought to check them out. I think, if you're new to Barbie movies, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the fact that the positive messaging is often superior to many of the Disney Princess movies which often involve a lot of controversy as to the "massaging." Check these Barbie movies out and please leave a comment below and let me know how you feel!

Breaking News - Barbie to hit the Silver Screen!!

In late April, 2014 it was announced that Mattel & Sony are coming together to bring our beloved Barbie to the silver screen! Barbie will star in "a live action contemporary comedy that brings her playful personality to life for generations of fans," stated Tim Kilpin, executive vice president of global brands at Mattel. The pitch for the movie came from Jenny Bicks (Rio2, Sex and the City.)

Reportedly, the Barbie movie will have her using her professional skills to have a positive impact on others, improving their lives. Sounds about right for a Barbie movie, right? Hmmm, now who will they cast to play the role of Barbie? I personally can't wait to hear. I can tell you that the intention is to begin production before year’s end.

UPDATE: July 2015 - I've been trying to find out more details for you all and haven't been very successful (sorry!) but I am reading that filming will begin before the end of 2015! I don't know about you, but I'm anxious to see just where they go with this. Barbie has held so many jobs since the 1950s and I wonder which ones will be showcased!

2014 Barbie Movies

  • The first Barbie movie release of 2014 (released March 11th) is "Barbie: The Pearl Princess". This is Barbie's 28th movie! Barbie has magical powers that make pearls dance and glow. There's a kingdom, a pink seahorse, a royal ball, and an adventure to be had! My girl really enjoyed this one, as they do every. Single. Barbie. Movie. :-)

  • "Barbie and the Secret Door" (released August 2014) - In this fairytale musical, a secret door is unlocked to a world like no other - one where a princess, a mermaid, and a fairy come together to save all the magic in the land! My daughters enjoyed this one very much, as they have all of the Barbie movies. The characters were much loved and they have every doll from this movie on their holiday wish list!

2013 Barbie Movies

  • The first one, "Barbie in The Pink Shoes" was released in February. In this movie, Barbie stars as Kristyn Farraday, a ballerina who discovers a magical pair of pink ballet shoes that allow her and her best friend, Hailey, to go to a magical world of ballet. Kristyn transforms there into Giselle (from the famous ballet Giselle) and Odette (from the ballet Swan Lake) in order to defeat the Snow Queen.

  • "Barbie: Mariposa and the Fairy Princess" - Released in August, this is the sequel to the 2008 Mariposa and her Butterfly Fairy Friends. • "Barbie and Her Sisters in a Pony Tale" - Barbie and her sisters set off on a Swiss adventure to the majestic Alps, where they spend the summer at a riding academy. Barbie wants to find a new horse to bring back to Malibu. Stacie's excited to prove her equestrian skills, and all Chelsea wants to do is ride the big horses. Skipper prefers to just write about the great outdoors. Barbie discovers a mysterious wild horse in the woods and that makes their visit truly magical.

2012 Barbie Movies:

  • "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2" has been released. Merliah travels to oceans far away to compete in a world surf championship. She makes new friends and catches big waves in an even bigger adventure! My kids keep watching this movie over and over again; it's a big hit with them!

  • "Barbie: The Princess and the Popstar" was released on September 11, 2012. In this movie, Barbie takes on a challenge — she plays two roles! In one, she’s a princess who feels bored and stifled by her very regimented life. In the other, she’s a rock star who is weary of touring, press junkets, and performances. When the girls decide to switch roles, they get a taste of how the other lives. Sounds a bit like a modern version of Barbie as Princess and the Pauper, which, in my opinion, cannot be topped!

2011 Barbie Movies:

In my humble opinion, this is the best Barbie movie of them all.

So many Barbie movies! While I don't have little girls in the house all the time - they do visit. I think I'll take your advice and get the one with the good music. Then maybe their mom and I will get a chance to chat a little more.

Oh, yes - actually, they all really have fantastic music, but I personally love the music in The Princess and the Pauper movie - it's fun. Putting in a movie is a great way to entertain children and, dare I say, distract them so you can have some "adult time"!

I watched Barbie and The Three Musketeers with my sister and I'm surprised to say that I actually liked that one.

Any movie that gets a six year-old girl to want to learn to use a sword is okay in my book. ;)

Funny, NateSean! My girls actually watched that one three times yesterday and have been running all around the house pretending to be Musketeers - it's so fun to watch them!

Now today, they were back to The Princess and The Pauper. Tomorrow will probably be Rapunzel! I definitely have myself two beautiful little princesses here!

I wonder if there is any girl who does not love Barbie? My daughter is a fan of Barbie too and every time we pass by a store where she sees a Barbie item, including movie DVDs like these, she would really beg me to buy for her. Well it's okay since I also enjoy watching Barbie films!
