Shall We Dance ?

Dancing—the way of life

It all started with my selection in the school dance team for the annual day celebration. That was my first (and last) performance as a classical dancer on the stage; I was in seventh grade then. Well…well…good old days…beautiful memories! Those applauds, which I heard that night from the audience, still reverberates in my ears.  Pardon me if I get drowned in those nostalgic moments on and off. So, after that performance I was strictly instructed by my parents, not to participate any more in such stupid and frivolous activities. I was a science student and such kinds of hobbies were supposedly not meant for me. You want to know why? Just because I was supposed to be buried in my 10 / 10 cubical under those fat books of anatomy and biology as my parents wanted me to be a doctor. Sounds weird? Hmm! That was the time when parents used to take all the small and major decisions for the child, even to the extent of deciding the number of times, a child should breathe in a day. Ok! I know that was a bit of exaggeration but, trust me, at the age of 12, it seemed like that.

Dance Stage

Well, it didn’t mean that I stopped dancing altogether. I realize now that under the cloak of a meek, polite, obedient and a submissive girl, lay hidden, a fiercely independent, adamant, vivacious and a determined young teenager. I knew for sure that I would never get a chance to join a dance school or give a public performance ever in my life again, so I brought the stage home. That was called ‘making things happen’ from a 12 year old girl’s perspective. From then on, my daily half hour dancing sessions started at home, behind the closed doors of my study room. Not that anyone else knew in the house as, if they had known, I would have been grounded. Music and dance became an integral part of life; it, in some ways, gave vent to the rebel in me. I got so much addicted to music that I almost started sleeping, eating, drinking and living with it. The only time I had to live without it, was during my school hours and the first thing I did after rushing back from school……..You know it by now.  :) :)

Tango Dance
Tango Dance

Tango Dance – an obsession

Tango is one dance which does something to me whenever I watch it on TV or see the couples dancing elegantly on the dance floor in any of those night parties. The alacrity and poise involved in the Tango dancing steps is simply exquisite. At least I haven’t felt this way about any other dance; to some extent Salsa has been another favorite.  It’s not hard to imagine how a dance originating from Argentina could become so popular across the globe. It deserves that kind of popularity and acclaim. Besides, a touch of European grace to the original dance steps has made it even more acceptable and lovable in different parts of the world. Credit goes even to the film directors who keep adding some flavor of Tango every now and then so that we can savor their movies. I’ve uploaded here my choicest video which should explain why Tango has a huge fan following. I guess it turns in to a miracle when it’s Jalo doing the honors. !!!!

Dance—my recreation

So what role does dance play in my life? It simply rejuvenates me. I feel alive when my body gyrates with the music. (I’ve to make sure that no one is looking, though. Lol). I just do it for my own self and I don’t care if I don’t know the steps. I don’t care if I didn’t take the formal training. For me, ‘Dance’ is a way of life. Dance is a state of mind. Generally speaking, when people feel happy, they dance. As for me, when I dance, I stay happy. :)  So that’s what I love to do when I’m alone. Besides writing, dancing to my choicest music is what I enjoy doing in my leisure time. Can there be any better exercise for the mind and body, than dancing away all your worries, stresses and fears? Dance is to me what soul is to body. It infuses life in me. I could never imagine myself in a state of health which prevents me from ‘doing the dance’.

I could feel your passion and joy regarding dancing, didn't know salsa was popular all over the world. My mother loved to dance, but when she got older she could hardly walk because of pain in her legs, and I asked her once, what would be the first thing she would do if she the pain would go away, and she replied "I would go dancing." She was already in her late 70's,  but her spirit was young. I will never forget this, as it touched me.

Enjoy reading your hub while sipping a cup of tea. :)

Hi Marie: Salsa and Tango have become an important part of Indian film industry. Most of the new releases come with fabulous dance items composed by Salsa dance professionals. The young generation loves it, perhaps for the passion and exuberance these dances project. Speaking about your Mom, I can very well understand ...not being able to dance for health reasons. That's exactly why I concluded my hub with that. Thx very much for your warm presence. (Hugs)

RedElf: Thx a lot for your generous comments. Dancing is a passion for me and that's why I could, perhaps, express it reasonably well in words. Keep coming back. :)

Hi Anjali,

I am so happy that you have this tremendous passion for dancing which truly is the best exercise for the mind and body, for melting away all your worries, stresses and fears.

"It simply rejuvenates me. I feel alive when my body gyrates with the music."

Maybe someday we can do the Tango and gyrate to the music! For now I would just like to catch you when you think no one is looking! LOL

Bless You,

Jim

Hi Anjali, that's Ok. Those things happen with the computer. Yes I noticed. I really would love to learn one great dance like the one in our favorite video. I just want you to know that you really have made a big difference in my life. I really love all your Hubs on poems, stories about the supernatural and superhuman feats!

I love dancing, it usually depends on my mood but in general I would say that salsa dancing for a party, house music for a disco night and of course what could be more sensual than a Tango for a really special moment?

So, do you tango and salsa in public these days, Anjalic, or do you still do it behind closed doors?

I don't dance tango and salsa myself, because I dance with my husband and he prefers the variety of ballroom and Latin dance.   Tango and salsa classes are very popular in Australia, though, not just for the sake of the dancing but as a way for singles to meet (for most classes, you don't need a partner).

The other dance style that has had a resurgence in popularity is belly dancing, which is one of the few styles you can start to learn in later life successfully.  I recommend it if you're looking for something to try!

my-success-guru: I don't know if I'm capable of making a difference in anyone's life but thanks anyways. Thanks very much for your kind words.

Princessa: It's an honor for me to have you in my hub. I know that you love dancing...quite expected out of a lively, vibrant and colorful person like you. Your hubs are a treat to the reader's eye. Thx for caring to stop by.

Marissa: Yes, it's still in private. Can't go public as my husband hates to dance. :) Speaking of belly dancing, I would always hang on to Tango. Thanks for your suggestion, though.

Hi Anjali,

These aren't just kind words. You really have made a difference in my life :) I look forward to the rest of your Hubs because the spiritual element gives me such a great sense of peace and for me where there is peace there is always hope.

Really wonderful hub, Anjal. You're excitement and love of dance comes through in your writing. I saw both movies you have here. They were both wonderful. I don't think there is a dance genre I don't appreciate, including Hip Hop.

I studied Ballet and Tap and my daughter was a professional Classical Ballet dancer. She also dabbled in Modern and Jazz. So, you see I have a great understanding and admiration for the art form. I just posted a hub about dance on my site. Take a look, when you get a chance.

alekhouse: I've seen these movies too. Great watch indeed. Before watching this movie I had no idea that Richard could dance so well. His dancing ability came as a surprise to me. Your daughter was a prfessional classical ballet dancer ? That's amazing ! I admire people who have an admiration for some or the other art form. I'll definitely check out your dance hub. Thx so much for your kind comments.

Anjali, great Hub! Lucky, determined you!, that you danced despite restrictions, . As for me, Life has forced dance on me. I dance to the tunes of my wife at home and to the Boss's at work and unfortunately not very good at both. LOL! Carry on nevertheless.

bala99: Wow ! I don't want to laugh at that but I must say you made it sound hillarious. Believe it or not, everyone dances to someone or the other's tunes on this earth. Life's like that. Can't change certain things. Laugh it off. It was kind of you to have visited this hub and posted such nice comments. Thx.
