Dark Souls 2 Character Level Up Guide

In Dark Souls 2, the hero arrives in the dark world of Drangleic as a nameless hero without a class. Soon, he arrives at the hut and tries to remember his name. Then he chooses and creates his class. Finally, the hero must level up and he must level up easily in order to defeat harder and harder monsters and bosses. This will provide the hero with a character creation and level up guide.

Dark Souls 2 Character Creation Guide

The hero is provided with a series of classes to choose from. The important thing to grasp is that each hero can then level up his character according to his wishes. The starting character then acts to provide starting attribute points that the hero can then add to.

For example, if the hero starts as a sorcerer and then decides that he wishes to use strength and massive weapons to subdue his enemies, he will have a lot to catch up with compared to a warrior when he levels up. The sorcerer starts with a strength of 3, and the warrior starts with an intelligence of 5. Similarly, trying to level up in a hurry to cast great spells will be difficult for a warrior. The basic soul arrow spell requires an intelligence of 14.

Here is the list of classes available to the hero -

Dark Souls 2 Use Souls to Level Up

  • To level up, first speak to the Emerald Herald near the Far Fire Bonfire at the Majula area. Then fast travel back to the Majula area and she will be at the Far Fire Bonfire. Speak to her to level up.

In Darks Souls 2, souls are the absolute commodity and currency. The hero will use souls to trade items and to level up. The heroes will get souls in the following ways -

  • by collecting souls of various types, from undead soldiers to knights to much more
  • by defeating tons of minions again and again (accumulation of pathetic amounts of souls)
  • by defeating boss monsters (rewarded with large amounts of souls)

The hero will carry the souls or experience points but he cannot absorb the souls until he has enough souls to do so. This is why the world of dark souls 2 is dangerous. The hero, when defeated, can drop his souls. Then it is a tedious and thankless task of going back and collecting the bloodstain or souls left on the ground. Sometimes, the hero is careless and drops his souls when he dies in a place that is so difficult it is simply impossible to retrieve the souls. Then the hero will find it near impossible to level up.

The tip is therefore to -

  • get from one bonfire to the other, defeat the minions and then go back and pick up the souls of the various types.
  • Then accumulate enough souls and level up.

When the hero wants to level up his character, first establish a balance between -

  • strength needed to wield a weapon
  • stamina required to run away and to execute a series of increasing damaging moves
  • magic or intelligence to learn the basic spells like soul arrow
  • divine to learn the healing spells like heal
  • health
  • Then, as the hero goes into the advanced level up, repeat the above cycle again until the desired effect is achieved.

For example, if the hero creates or starts off as a warrior, he may want to use the halberd, a weapon that requires a strength of 20. So leave magic aside and concentrate on strength. Then when strength reaches 20, the warrior may want to increase his meager intelligence of 5 to 14 to cast the soul arrow spell. Then the warrior chances upon another great weapon. So he may want to level up and increase his strength again.

Dark Souls 2 Attributes to Performance, Defense and Weapon Damage

The above attributes are then used to determine the following -

  • HP
  • Stamina
  • Equip load
  • Spell Slot - Attunement needs to be 10 before the first spell slot is available. Nothing is easy in Dark Souls 2.
  • Cast Speed
  • ATK St
  • ATK Dex
  • Magic BNS
  • Fire BNS
  • Lightning BNS
  • Dark BNS
  • Poison BNS
  • Bleed BNS
  • Phys DEF
  • Magic DEF
  • Fire DEF
  • Lightning DEF
  • Dark DEF
  • Poison RES
  • Bleed RES
  • Petrify RES
  • Curse RES
  • AGL
  • Poise
  • Right Weapon 3 slots
  • Left Weapon 3 slots
  • Defense VS Strike
  • VS Slash
  • VS thrust
  • Poise

Some of the attributes and the performance stats they affect are self explanatory. For example, strength affects ATK St and dexterity affects ATK Dex. Vigor affects health. The idea is to create and then level up the character that can be used to according to the hero's preference. These can include -

  • speed run to the bonfires
  • use of dodge to attack the boss monsters

If the above fits the hero's preference, then a swordsman with dual wielding is best in this case.

Dark Souls 2 How to Farm Souls at Heide's Tower of Flame to Level Up Attunement and Intelligence

After the first two boss fights (the last giant above and the Dragonrider below), the swordsman hero would have reached the -

  • Heide's Tower of Flame
  • No Man's Wharf

At this point, the hero will be at a low to middle level. He can survive but he is not good enough to take on the other enemies from range. So the hero needs to farm souls at the above two locations to get reasonable experience points or souls to level up to the middle tier level.

Use the dragonrider fallible platform to make the giant knights fall. Level up the attunement attribute and the spell slot to get one spell slot initially. Then use soul arrows to farm souls from the giant knights. Once this is done, get more soul arrows spell slots and proceed to No Man's Wharf.

Dark Souls 2 Farm Souls At No Man's Wharf to Level Up Magic

  • At No Man's Wharf, defeat the demonic creatures that appear just after the hero ascends some stairs, and just before reaching the double storey house that leads to the bell that will summon the ship.

At this point, the demonic creatures will come out chasing the hero, but will not be able to cross the narrow point, or be able to go into the light. Use soul arrows to eliminate the demonic creatures. There are about 6 to 8 of these slow moving creatures which will succumb to the hero's repeated soul arrow firing. Each creature yields 370 souls.

  • Then get to the Sorceror Merchant's location at No Man's Wharf and get more powerful soul arrow spells. Finally, defeat the Flexile Sentry in the ship, and the hero will get the Pyromancy and Fireball spell.

After this, with a halberd long weapon, soul arrow spells, healing miracles and fireball spells, it's really unconscious level up from this point onwards at the Lost Bastille.
