Tomb Raider Reboot

A New, Younger Lara Croft

A new Tomb Raider game is scheduled to be released this December 2011. This one focuses on a new, different kind of origins story. Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider: Legend) discovered that a new, drastic reboot was necessary for Lara Croft. They broke her down to rebuild her, deciding what was necessary to maintain her distinctness and what wasn't.

The result is a young, inexperienced Lara Croft that is stranded on an island on her first expedition. She must explore the island, scavenge new gear, combining new items and learning and developing new skills. She won't be quite the same Lara we were used to. She will start with being a little bit vulnerable and not really in charge. As the game progresses Lara will be tested both physically and emotionally and her inner strength will shine through as she is transformed into a survivor.

"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive." Square Enix statement in revealing the game, called simply Tomb Raider.

A 21 year old Lara Croft joins the crew of the Endurance, a salvage ship captained by Conrad Roth as it looks for treasure off the Japanese coast. The ship wrecks, leaving Lara to find a way to survive.

I personally love the new look. She remains recognizable as Lara but in a more realistic way. The picture down below gives great insight into her character. Lara's expression is dangerous in a way someone who has been through a traumatizing experience might have. But the set of her mouth still speaks of some vulnerability. Her clothes will evolve as the game progresses becoming more torn and dirty.

The new Tomb Raider will be out in time for Christmas this year and will appear on both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 as well as the PC.

Dress like Lara Croft

Lara Croft is independent, brave, athletic and beautiful. She explores ancient tombs around the world so her style of clothes usually consists of durable and comfortable tanks, shorts, pants and boots. She is not known to be trendy or fashion forward but her clothes are timeless.

Bring out your inner adventurer, Lara Croft style.

Hey Evvy, I have not real interesting Tomb Raider Reboot, but I wouldn't mind doing it as a part of life. The exploration that Lara Croft goes through, example of the movies with Angelina Jolie, is pretty awesome. You did a good job on the hub. Nice and informative. :) :D

Thanks Cagsil, this is the very first time you have commented on my hubs. :) I'm not suprised that Lara is the one that caught your interest. I've always loved the games and the character has done alot to further women roles in video games, right along with Samus.

Hey sord87, always great to see your comments. I haven't had the chance to play that many Tomb Raider games, but I've always loved the character of Lara Croft.

Crystal Dynamics have done a great job with reinventing Tomb Raider and this new reincarnation will hopefully remind gamers why Lara was one of the Queens of video games.

I am looking forward to this, but sort of wish it was not a reboot. The last Tomb Raider(underworld) was really good, it just did not sell well.

That's a sick picture of Lara, the one with her knees on ground.

The Tomb Raider franchise has been around since the 90s, and was most likely most popular back then. The thing is, TR never has had multiplayer which makes it hard to compete with other games. I have beaten every TR except 3.

Thanks for reading and commenting David 470. I will defer to the judgement of the game makers and hope they know what is best for Lara. The game looks great so far but I'm watching closely.

I LUV Tomb Raider! When my son was younger, he and I played together. I was the navigator, and he worked the controls. Often times I played alone, and for hours. I wasn't good enough with the controls (a memory card is my dearest friend while playing). The graphics, and the stunts that you could manage were (are) out of this world. I'm not a gamer, but this game will be worth getting! Thanks for sharing...and I'll let my son know...this is exciting!!!

Thanks imatellmuva for commenting. Are you sure you aren't a gamer? I read some wise words that said "I game, therefore I am a...gamer"

Well...maybe I am a gamer...a baby gamer! I have a lot to learn from you though...A LOT!!!

The new Lara since Crystal Dynamics took over is way more realistic and capable and I often find myself just stopping in mid flow and marveling the surroundings like a water wheel at a waterfall and mist on the water beyond it or seeing things slightly out of focus in the background as though the camera has shifted to narrow aperture - so amazing. It helps naturally that Lara also looks a lot more hotter than ever. SO seeing her in the new game will be a "Revelation". LOL! Had to stick that in there! :D

Imatellmuva, a baby gamer? Love it! I don't know if I really have anything to teach though. Most of my friends are gamers and they help keep me informed of any news and info I might miss myself.

Cheekygirl, lol@pun I constantly marvel at the beautiful graphics in games too. Red Dead Redemption was one of the most recent. Picture a cowboy riding a horse on top of a hill, staring at the many shades of reds and oranges of a sunset. Really made me want to take a picture :)

Thanks to both for commenting and I'm really excited that Tomb Raider is coming to Xbox too. My PS2 broke in the middle of playing TR and a couple other good games and I've really missed playing as Lara.

I can't say I've ever been a tomb raider fan, but I'm not surprised they're rebooting her; especially since I know they're already working on a film reboot as well. It'll be interesting to see how well this turns out.

I didn't know about the film reboot. Angelina Jolie made the only choice for Lara Croft in that time. But I guess with Lara going in a different direction, another actress might be able to pull it off too. Thanks Stevennix for reading and commenting.

I'm very curious to see how this tomb raider game turns out. Crystal Dynamics brushed on Lara's origins in both Tomb Raider Legend (flash backs) and Tomb Raider Anniversary. It will be interesting to see a more fleshed out origin. Having said that, I worry they're turning the series into more of a survival horror than adventure/platforming. I was a huge fan of the last three games because of how much Crystal Dynamics focused on action puzzles and story. I trust CD to tell a good story, but its up in the air how the game will actually play.
